In his first coming God fulfilled his love plan for our redemption at the Cross making every high mountain low, and filling every deep valley, making straight and level every crocked way filled with boulders of sin that separated us making it impossible to reach him.
Jesus made sure the path to our salvation, peace and rest toward him is straight and smooth.
In his first coming St. Cyril of Jerusalem says, Jesus, taught by gentle persuasion, but he testifies that they saw him and hated him.
In his second coming all flesh will see the salvation of our Lord and look to him whom they pierced, and all knees will bend and all tongues confess that he is Lord from necessity whether they like it or not.

Again St. Bernard says that because this coming is between the first the second coming, it is like a road we travel between the two comings.

The apostle Paul in our 2nd reading says he is confident that the one who started a good work in you will continue to complete it until the day of Christ Jesus.
He prays beautifully that our love may increase ever more and more, and to discern what is of value.
Thus, in this age of the Church now, every day is Advent for us, to prepare the way of the Lord hidden in our hearts, taking away hardness and coldness of heart towards God and others, unforgiveness, addictions, descriptions, selfish ambitions, taking them straight up the path of the Cross, so that love may increase in us ever more, and that we may know what is of real value in life, to be pure and blameless, filled with the fruits of righteousness that comes from Jesus himself, until the day of Christ Jesus our Lord.
