Mary's Diary
Wednesday
I dreamed of this all my life. The matchmaker came over today. I tried to hear but I couldn't get close enough. It isn’t proper for me to ask. It wasn't a surprise that she came by our home. I noticed her talking with my parents a couple of times in the market. I wondered if it was just polite conversation or if it was about me. Now I know.

I dreamed of this all my life. The matchmaker stopped in over today. My mother made me leave as soon as she arrived. I want to find out what happened, but it isn’t proper for me to ask. It wasn't a surprise she came by our home. I noticed her talking with my parents in the market. I wondered if it was just polite conversation or if it was about me. Now I was certain.
My girlfriends and I like to have fun wondering what it will be like to be married. We've watched bachelors walk through town and imagined being married to them. Sometimes we squeal and make faces when we see the skinny, simple-minded boy down the street or the old, fat widower. Every conversation ends the same. We wistfully dream about being married to the most handsome and strongest man in town. Then we argue about which one of us will end up marrying him.

You can always hear the matchmaker before you see her. How does such a loud voice come out of such a small body? She knows everyone, and everyone likes her. Probably because she’s a reliable source for the latest gossip. By now everyone in town, including my friends, knew she visited us. My friends are going to want to know all the details. I wish I had something to tell them!

I dreamed of this all my life. Every girl wonders what it will feel like. The matchmaker came over today. I tried to listen but I couldn't get close enough to hear their hushed conversation and it wouldn't have been proper for me to ask. It wasn't a surprise that she came by our home. I've noticed her talking with my parents lately in the market. I wondered if it was just normal conversation or if it was about me. Now I know.

I saw my friends today and like I thought, they knew the matchmaker came by. They are excited for me and were disappointed when I told them I didn’t know any more than they did. They weren’t satisfied with that, so they decided they would choose a husband for me. Our normally fun time turned into teasing. The focus was all on me. They were not kind as they pointed out the strengths and weaknesses of each potential suitor. I tried to laugh but was too anxious to enjoy it. As I looked at each man, I realize my dreams could turn into a nightmare.

Today my friends told me everyone is gossiping about the matchmaker visit to my house. They are excited for me. I disappointed when I said my parents didn’t tell me anything. That didn’t make them happy, so they decided they would choose a husband for me. Our fun time turned into teasing. The focus was all on me. I've still had no word from my parents about a possible betrothal. I was pleasantly surprised today when I saw Joseph and his father building a new house in town. Both noticed me and smiled. I wonder! Maybe I’m just a silly girl. On the other hand, how wonderful it would be if he were the one!

The matchmaker isn't good at keeping secrets. She talks to everyone in her path and is a reliable source for the latest gossip. By now everyone in town, including my girlfriends, knew she was meeting my parents. I'm sure the next time I see my girlfriends, they're going to want to know all the details. As of yet, there are none.
He is the one! I am going to marry Joseph!
Early this morning mother told me Joseph and his representative were coming by to talk with father and his representative. They came in the afternoon and the negotiation went as planned. I am betrothed to Joseph.

Joseph is a kind, quiet, hard-working man. He and his father are well-liked. Joseph has a reputation for being honest and reliable. Today was the first time we ever talked. It was awkward. We said “Hello” then sat for a long period of silence. Then both of us started to speak at the same time. We laughed and that eased the tension. He told me he wants to have a large family with God at the center. He promised to work hard and with God's help provide for our needs. We will live with his parents until God provides the way for him to build us a home here in Nazareth.
This morning mother told me Joseph was coming over to talk with Father. He and Father each had representatives who negotiated for them. They agreed! I am betrothed to Joseph.

It was as I expected. My friends were all excited for me and wanted to know everything about the matchmaker's meeting with my parents. I'd like to know, too. I was hoping they would talk to me after the matchmaker left, but they didn't. It wasn't my place to ask. Perhaps it was a general conversation and may not lead to a betrothal.

My friends are happy for me. I'm happy for myself! The wedding is months away, but that’s okay. There is so much to do to prepare. I know the time will pass quickly. Things could not be better! Thanks be to God.

The most amazing thing happened today. I don’t fully understand it, but I know it happened. I was visited by the angel Gabriel. It seems incredible for me to write those words but it’s true.

I know angels visited people in the past, but I never expected it to happen to me. I was alone when he appeared. I wish someone were with me to hear what he said. I was frightened because I did not know who he was. He assured me I had nothing to fear. He told me I am highly favored by God.

Sunday
The Bible says angels visited people in the past, but I never expected it to happen. His name is Gabriel. One moment I was alone and the next he was there. I saw him but couldn’t move. No one was with me. I want to run away! When he spoke his voice he assured me I had nothing to fear. He said I am favored by God.

Then he told me something unbelievable. He said I would conceive and give birth to a son. I would call him Jesus and he will be great and called the son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob's descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.
Monday
I felt God’s peace as he talked. I knew he was an angel and that everything he said was true. But I didn't understand. How would it happen? When would it happen? I'm a virgin.

Then Gabriel told me Elizabeth, my cousin, is going to have a child in her old age. I didn’t know that. He said she's in her sixth month. "For no word from God will ever fail," he said. God was keeping His promise to send the Messiah.

I can’t stop thinking about what Gabriel told me. It’s always on my mind. I can’t keep my mind focused on anything. Everyone keeps asking me what’s wrong. I wish I could say, “Nothing’s wrong except I was visited by an angel and told I’m going to be the mother of the messiah even though I’m still a virgin.”

Friday at Elizabeth and Zechariah's home
We arrived today. I didn’t enjoy the journey. I was anxious every waking moment. I kept trying to think of how to tell Elizabeth what happened. As it turned out, I didn't have to.

We arrived at Elizabeth and Zechariah’s last night. It took three days but I don’t remember the journey. Every waking moment I contemplated how to tell Elizabeth. I ate little, slept little and said even less. My brother stopped asking what was wrong when all I did was smile weakly and shrug. It’s hard to keep a secret from those I love! My worry was for nothing. I didn’t have to tell Elizabeth.
Thursday
I walked into their house and called to Elizabeth. The moment she heard me she was filled with the Holy Spirit. I stood wide-eyed as she greeted me in a loud voice, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! But why am I so favored that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!"

Then the Holy Spirit filled me, and I responded, "My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me--holy is his name. His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. He has performed mighty deeds with his arm, he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful to Abraham and his descendants forever, just as he promised our ancestors."

We spent the rest of the day telling our stories. She said Zechariah saw an angel when serving in the temple. The angel told him they would have a son. Zechariah doubted his word. The angel told him because of his lack of faith, he wouldn’t be able to speak until the boy was born. She is in her sixth month, so it would be a few a while before Zechariah can tell them everything that happened. She said her son is to prepare the way for my son.

I told her all about Gabriel's visit and that I’m grateful God chose me. I also told her I'm afraid. I don't know how to tell Joseph or my parents. She said this is from God. God will give me favor with Joseph. She’s right. But it's still going to be hard.

I told her all about Gabriel's visit. I thank God every day for this privilege. I try to imagine the future it but it isn’t clear. I want it to be! How do I share this with Joseph or my parents? She said this is from God. God will give me favor with Joseph. She’s right.
Today something happened I am struggling to understand. I was visited by the angel Gabriel. I know the stories of angels appearing to people in olden days, but never expected it to happen to me. He appeared when I was alone. I was frightened at his sudden appearance and because I did not know who he was. He assured me I had nothing to fear and told me I am highly favored by God. Then he told me something incredible, that I would conceive and give birth to a son. I would call him Jesus and he will be great and called the son of the most high. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob's descendents forever; his kingdom will never end.
We spent the rest of the day telling our stories. She said Zechariah saw an angel when serving in the temple. The angel told him they would have a son. Zechariah doubted his word. The angel told him because of his lack of faith, he wouldn’t be able to speak until the boy was born. She is in her sixth month, so it will be a while before Zechariah can tell them everything that happened. Her son is to prepare the way for my son.

These past few days have been the best I’ve had since Gabriel visited me. Elizabeth has been a great comfort to me. We've shared our hopes, dreams, and fears for the days ahead. We’ve talked about the promises from God's word about the Messiah. She knows the Bible quite well. It's exciting to read verses about the Messiah and imagine them being about my son. It still doesn't seem real.

I can't tell you how, but I knew he was an angel and that everything he said was from God. But I didn't understand. How would this take place? When would this take place? I'm still a virgin.

Wednesday at Elizabeth and Zachariah's home.
The past three months have gone by quickly. Elizabeth will soon give birth to her son. It's time for me to return. I’m in my fourth month and am beginning to show that I am with child. It isn’t as obvious when I wear loose clothing, but I won't be able to do that for long. Tomorrow morning we leave. I wish I didn’t have to go. This time has been refreshing. I know it's time.

He told me the Holy Spirit will come upon me and the power of the most high will overshadow me. The holy one who will be born will be called the Son of God.

Friday home in Nazareth
We arrived home safely. So far, I don’t think anyone has noticed that I am pregnant. Everyone wanted to hear about Zechariah and Elizabeth. I was more than happy to talk about them. Joseph came by and we set up a time for the two of us to talk, tomorrow. Lord give me wisdom and help Joseph to understand.
I realized he was telling me that God chose me to be the mother of the Messiah. My mind was trying to understand and accept everything he said. I wanted to know more, but I couldn't think of any thing to ask him.
I’m back home. So far no one has noticed that I am pregnant. Everyone wanted the latest news about Zechariah and Elizabeth. I was more than happy to give it to them. Joseph stopped by. We arranged a time to talk. Lord give me wisdom and help Joseph understand.

Then he told me that my cousin Elizabeth is going to have a child in her old age. I knew that she wanted a child but was unable to conceive. Gabriel told me she's now in her sixth month. Then he said, "For no word from God will ever fail." Then I understood. God was keeping the promise he made throughout our history as a people to send the Messiah. This is how he chose to do it. I couldn't fully grasp what he was saying, but I knew it was right and I knew it would be a great blessing for me.
My conversation with Joseph didn't end well.

I’m back home. So far no one has noticed that I am pregnant. Everyone wanted the latest news about Zechariah and Elizabeth. I was more than happy to give it to them. Joseph stopped by. We arranged a time to talk. Lord give me wisdom and help Joseph understand.
It started great. He greeted me, and it seemed like my heart would burst. Would he still be smiling after I told him everything?
Monday
Joseph greeted me with a warm smile. I felt like my heart was going to burst. I was so glad to see him. I needed to tell him everything. He asked about my trip. I paused and looked away. I had a long time to think about what I was going to say. I knew the best thing to do was to tell him what happened as it happened. I looked into his warm and tender eyes and prayed he would understand.
I said to him, "I am the Lord's servant. May your word be fulfilled in me."
My conversation with Joseph didn't end well.
I began by telling him that I needed to explain why I visited Elizabeth. He looked puzzled. I paused again, took a deep breath and told him about being visited by the angel Gabriel. I explained every word and every detail as it happened. When I told him the angel said that even though I am a virgin, I am to bear a child, who would be the Messiah, he looked down. Was he embarrassed, ashamed, angry?
He asked about my trip. My mind went blank. I paused. What should I say? Everything! How do I start? I hoped and prayed he would understand.
It started great. He greeted me, and it seemed like my heart would burst. Would he still be smiling after I told him everything?
I explained I wanted to tell him then, but I didn't know how. Since the angel told me about Elizabeth's miraculous pregnancy, I realized she would be the best person to talk with first. I described how she greeted me when I walked in the door and my response to her. I told him how Gabriel visited Zachariah and told him they would have a son in their old age and that their son would be the forerunner for the Messiah.
He looked puzzled as I took a deep breath and began. My voice, though quiet, seemed to fill the room. I said, “Four month ago I was visited by the angel Gabriel.” Then I explained every word and every detail. When I said, “The angel told me I would become pregnant with a son, God’s Messiah,” Joseph turned away. Was he embarrassed or angry? God, please help him understand!
Quickly I continued. “But I’m a virgin,” I told Gabriel, “How was that possible?” The Holy Spirit would come upon me.
He asked about my trip. My mind went blank. I paused. What should I say? Everything! How do I start? I hoped and prayed he would understand.
Then he left.
I finished and we sat in silence. "Joseph, please say something."
I wanted to tell him right away, but I feared he wouldn’t believe me. Since the angel told me about Elizabeth's miraculous pregnancy, I realized she would be the best person to talk with first. That was why I visited her. Then I described how she greeted me when I walked in the door and my response to her. Later Elizabeth told me how Gabriel visited Zachariah to tell him they would have a son in their old age and that their son would be the forerunner for the Messiah.
He stood without looking at me, turned and walked away. God, I feel so all alone. What do I do now?

“The Holy Spirit would come upon me,” he said.
It's been a week and I haven't heard from Joseph. I'm spending all of my time alone, crying and praying. Mother keeps asking what's wrong, but I can't talk to her, not yet. God, please help me.

I told Joseph I wanted to tell him right away, but I feared he wouldn’t believe me. Since the angel told me about Elizabeth's miraculous pregnancy, I told him I concluded she would be the best person to talk with first and she was! That was why I visited her. Then I described how she greeted me when I walked in the door and my response to her. Next I told him the details about how Elizabeth told me Gabriel visited Zachariah to tell him they would have a son in their old age and that their son would be the forerunner for the Messiah.
Joseph came by today. The moment our eyes met I knew everything was okay.
Finally I whispered, “It happened, Joseph, I’m pregnant.”
It's been a week. Not one word from Joseph. I'm spending all of my time alone, crying and praying. Mother keeps asking what's wrong, but I can't talk to her, not yet. God, please help me.
It's been a tough roof week, I haven't been able to think about anything other than what the angel Gabriel told me. I've wanted to share it with my parents, with my friends, and with Joseph, but I can't. Who would believe what happened to me? I've decided to visit my cousin Elizabeth. Of everyone in my life, she will understand.
He stood without looking at me, turned and walked away. What do I do now?
I wasn't surprised to hear that he didn't believe my story. Who has ever become pregnant when still a virgin? Joseph thought I betrayed him. But he is a godly man and did not want to expose me to public disgrace. He didn't tell anyone or seek counsel, because he was so ashamed.

Joseph came by today. The moment our eyes met I saw everything was okay.
Monday
He decided to divorce me quietly but before he was able to do so an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. The angel said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."
I arranged to have my brother accompany me on my journey. We leave tomorrow and should be there by Friday.
He didn't accept my story. No virgin has ever become pregnant. Joseph assumed I betrayed him. But he didn’t want to shame me. When he considered his options, he decided not to tell anyone or seek counsel because he was so ashamed.

He asked me to forgive him for not believing me. He now knows for certain that God chose me to be the mother of the Messiah. He feels as honored as I do at this great privilege. Then he surprised me and said we need to get married as soon as possible. After the baby is born, people will think that we rushed the wedding because I was pregnant. Right now, that's the least of my concerns.

Thank you, Father, for blessing me with this child and blessing me with a husband who loves and trusts you.
My heart melted when he asked me to forgive him. The visit by the angel confirmed for him that God chose me to be the mother of the Messiah. God has also honored him with this privilege. Then he surprised me and said we need to get married as soon as possible. After the baby is born, people will assume we rushed the wedding because I was pregnant. That's the least of my concerns.
Friday at Elizabeth and Zechariah's home
Joseph came by today. The moment our eyes met I saw everything was okay.
He said at first he didn't accept my story. No virgin has ever become pregnant. Joseph assumed I betrayed him. But he didn’t want to shame me. When he considered his options, he decided not to tell anyone or seek counsel because he was so ashamed.
Thank you, Father, for blessing me with this child and blessing me with a husband who loves and trusts you.
We arrived today as planned. We had a safe journey and normally it would have been enjoyable, but not this time. I was anxious, not knowing what to expect. I haven't told anyone yet about the angels visit and I didn't know how I was going to tell her. It turns out I didn't have to.
Even though he didn’t want to do it, he decided to divorce me. Before he could do so an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. The angel said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. That's the least of my concerns.
Thank you, Father, for blessing me a husband who loves and trusts you and for this child.
I walked in and called out to greet Elizabeth.
Elizabeth was just as surprised when the Holy Spirit filled me. I responded, "My soul glorifies the Lord in my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me-holy is his name. He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful to Abraham and his descendents forever, just as he promised our ancestors."
Then we hug and had a good cry. They were tears of joy, and for me relief. Here was someone who understood what was happening to me, probably better than I understood myself.
We spent the rest of the day telling each other our stories. She told me that Zechariah saw an angel when serving in the temple and that the angel told him we would have a son. Zechariah doubted his word and as a result the angel told him he would be unable to speak until the boy was born. She was now in her sixth month, so it would be a few a while before Zechariah was able to tell them everything about what happened. What she does now is that her son is to go before my son and prepare the way for his ministry.
I told her about Gabriel's visit and what he said. I told her that I am amazed and blessed that God chose me. I also told her that I'm afraid, because I don't know how to tell Joseph or my parents. Tuesday at Elizabeth and Zechariah's home
These past few days with Elizabeth have been a great comfort to me. We've been able to share our hopes and dreams and our fears for the days ahead. We also have talked about the promises from God's word about the Messiah. Since she's married to a priest, she knows the Bible quite well. We have had refreshing times talking about what the Bible says our sons will do. It's exciting and doesn't yet seem real. I'm going to stay for a few months. Elizabeth is in her sixth month and can use the help around the house. I can use her help in preparing for the days ahead when I must return to Nazareth and tell Joseph.

We arrived home safely, and no one has yet noticed that I am pregnant. Everyone wanted to know about Zechariah and Elizabeth. I was more than happy to talk about them, which helped me not to think about the conversations that I need to have. Joseph came by and we set up a time to talk, just the two of us, tomorrow. Lord give me wisdom and help Joseph to understand.
