Introduction
For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
The prophet Isaiah in one verse reveals 4 names of of the Child that is born and the Son that is given. We have learned that each of these names are characteristics of of the Child that is born and the Son that is given. It doesn’t say that the Child and Son will become these, but it says that these characteristics will represent who this Child is that is born and who this Son is that will be given. This means He will already have these characteristics.
We have learned that He will be the wonder of a counselor and His wisdom will astonish and captivate those who seek Him. As Wonderful Counselor, He is the fulfillment of all that both the Old Testament and New Testament teach. But He is not just the Wonderful Counselor, He shall be called Mighty God. Coming off the name of Wonderful Counselor, as Mighty God He has the power to carry out His wise plans.
There are two questions that come to my mind when hear this title Mighty God.
What does it meant to be called Mighty God?
Why can I call Him Mighty God?
When one is Mighty, He is powerful and He is the strong one. When One is Mighty God, He is the expression of God Himself. He is God the Mighty Man. He is the Divine Warrior.
In that day they will say,
“Surely this is our God;
we trusted in him, and he saved us.
This is the Lord, we trusted in him;
let us rejoice and be glad in his salvation.”
Isaiah 9:25
A remnant will return, a remnant of Jacob
will return to the Mighty God.
Isaiah
When One is Mighty God, as the Messiah He will do God-like activities, what no other had been able to do.
Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future he will honor Galilee of the Gentiles, by the way of the sea, along the Jordan—
The people walking in darkness
have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of the shadow of death
a light has dawned.
You have enlarged the nation
and increased their joy;
they rejoice before you
as people rejoice at the harvest,
as men rejoice
when dividing the plunder.
For as in the day of Midian’s defeat,
you have shattered
the yoke that burdens them,
the bar across their shoulders,
the rod of their oppressor.
Every warrior’s boot used in battle
and every garment rolled in blood
will be destined for burning,
will be fuel for the fire.
These God-like activities are mentioned in these verses:
Being a Great Light
Enlarging the Nation
Increasing Joy
Freedom by shattering the yoke, bar and rod
Establishing Peace
You see, in this verse in which we are given these characteristics of the Child being born and the Son being given. we are reminded of the humanity of Christ and the deity of Christ. From humble birth to glorious reign.
The Bible says He shall be called Mighty God. This indicates that He will be so as a child, as an adult and throughout eternity.
If you call yourself a Christian, they you believe that wherever you are that the One called Mighty God is indeed able to hear your prayers, see your tears, know your wants, ready to pardon your sins, and that He knows you better that you could ever know yourself.
You believe that He searches your heart. You also believe that you can never come to Him without finding Him full of sympathy and full of love.
He is omniscient. Only God can be omniscient. The Child that is born and the Son that is Given is 100% man and 100% God. Job said it best:
Job
If only there were someone to arbitrate between us,
to lay his hand upon us both,
As Mighty God, Jesus had to have His hand on both, both upon man in our nature, touched with a feeling of our infirmities and in all points like as we are. He can only be a true mediator if He has His hands on both, at the same time placing His hand on that which is Holy. Only God can put His hand on God!
As a teenager, I had the opportunity to build a bridge for my Eagle Scout Service Project. It was part of a trail that was to go over a swampy area with three streams. I developed plans, I secured the materials and spent over 100 hours building this bridge. I had to lay out this bridge in a way that it would connect from both sides of the stream. Had I been off in my calculations, the bridge would have never connected. Jesus came to this world to be our bridge to connect us to the Holiness of our Lord. He lived and died experiencing all that you and I could ever experience. The Child that is born and the Son that is given would be tempted in every way, ridiculed, mocked, tried, and even put to death.
What a Mighty God we serve!
As Mighty God, He is Great
Yet, as Mighty God, He is Great
Do not be terrified by them, for the Lord your God, who is among you, is a great and awesome God.
Deuteronomy 7:21.
For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes.
Deuteronomy 10:
“Now therefore, O our God, the great, mighty and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love, do not let all this hardship seem trifling in your eyes—the hardship that has come upon us, upon our kings and leaders, upon our priests and prophets, upon our fathers and all your people, from the days of the kings of Assyria until today.
Nehemiah 9:32

What a Mighty God we serve.
As Mighty God, He is Gracious.
The Lord is gracious and righteous;
our God is full of compassion.
Isaiah
O people of Zion, who live in Jerusalem, you will weep no more. How gracious he will be when you cry for help! As soon as he hears, he will answer you.
He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?
What a Mighty God we serve/
As Mighty God, He is Generous.
Titus 3:4-
But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.
whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior,
During this Season as we reflect of the Child that is born and the Son that is given, can you call Him Mighty God?
He endured scorn and temptation and resisted them for you and me.
He bore the sins of all mankind on the cross including yours and mine, past present and future.
He conquered death through the resurrection.
This Child that is born and the Son that is given, is indeed MIGHTY GOD.
