The Reality of our Day (Our time in history)
One of the most difficult realities of living in a sin cursed world is the reality that truth is hard to come by.
We live in an age of information, which can be both a blessing and a curse.
It’s a blessing in that we have so many resources at our fingertips that knowledge has indeed increased!
It’s a curse in that it can be difficult for us to filter through the multitude of “knowledge” to decipher whst is true and what is false.
Our Source of Truth
As Christians we know that the Bible is true.
In fact it is the only real source of truth.
So the Word of God is our source of truth.
So the natural question we might ask is why then is there such a diversity of teaching within the umbrella of Christendom?
Why is there so much confusion?
This is not meant to be an oversimplification of the subject, but I belive the reason for this is very simple and it gets to the heart of what Paul is saying to Timothy in our text.
The difference between right doctrine and false doctrine is correct interpretation.
This is a subject that deserves more attention than it gets even in good Baptist churches.
We have in many repects good, obedient Christians that cant see false doctrine if it slammed them in the face like a 2x4.
This statement is not meant to be harsh and rude but it is the reality!
There is an overarching sentiment in modern American Christianity that division is bad and unity is good.
Consider what Spurgeon Said:
“On all hands we hear cries for unity in this and unity in that; but in our mind the main need of this age is not compromise but conscientiousness.
`First pure, then peaceable…’ It is easy to cry, `A confederacy,’ but that union that is not based on the truth of God is rather a conspiracy than a communion.
Charity by all means: but honesty also.
Love of course, but love to God as well as love to men, and love of truth as well as love of union.
It is exceedingly difficult in these times to preserve one’s fidelity before God and one’s fraternity among men.
Should not the former be preferred to the latter if both cannot be maintained?
We think so.”
Bible Doctrine
What is Bible doctrine?
Where do we get Bible doctrine?
How do we get Bible doctrine?
We get Correct Bible Doctrine from correct Bible Interpretation
Our beliefs come from a proper interpretation of the Word of God
Bible Interpretation
What is meant when we say Bible Interpretation?
Are there many ways to interpret the Bible - some think there are hundreds, thousands...
There are really only two forms - Literal & Allegorical - possibly a third “dogma”
Covenant Theology / Dispensational Theology
What is the difference?
Why we hold to the literal interpretation of Scripture
Rules for Proper Bible Interpretation
Examples of False Doctrine that is a result of improper Bible Interpretation
