John returns to the bread motif to connect the physical demonstration to the crowd to a personal discipleship. First Jesus tests Phillips “ideas how to meet the fleshly needs of this ministry. Then he leads them in actual ministry demonstrating his power to feed, and would later begin to reveal the true need and appropriate provision was himself, not what he could do for the people ut rather further reveal to the disciples his power over the waters . the worldly focused crowd does not seek The miracle worker and teacher but rather the waiter neither asking how the teacher provided, but on what next was for dinner pay to follow their bellies. attention to the sign with a disingenuous motive yet Jesus confronts their motives and drops a truth bomb which they do not understand, and will have to relate the physical miracle and his true identity as the bread that has come from heaven, That he is the true manna from heaven, which was not provided by the prophet Moses but rather from God

Perhaps they thought God would “OWE THEM” after they did those works. or that they could earn it themselves independently of God like was done at the tower of Babble.
Instead Jesus answers they truly need simply to believe in (cling to trust in rely on) the one he has sent. they challenge him to authenticate his teaching by repeating another miracle or they like senseless animals they just are governed by their flesh soon to forget who provided for them before the previous day “what have you done for me lately.
