From my lips to your ears

(Lips to ears picture)
Proverbs 18 has lots of words concerning lips, mouth, words, wisdom and foolishness. From our heart to our lips from our lips to others ears we can bring words that build up or destroy, we need to know and need to be careful the words we use (Jam3:10.
James 3:10 NASB95
10 from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way.
Our mouth, our tongue speaks volumes. Some may speak more than others, but still we speak volumes. Our lips, our tongues can speak blessings and curses. (insert personal illustration of good and bad use of tongue).
The wise, the prudent learn to control their tongue so as to bring glory to God. As we do a survey of Proverbs 18 regarding the tongue, mouth, lips and bring in other scriptures may we learn about speaking for it originates in the heart. So the words we use area heart matter.

Deep Water

Have you ever gotten yourself in “deep water” because of the words you used? Words are a deep water, and they are also a fountain, hopefully a fountain of living water.
___________________________________________________
Words are deep water (Pro18:4)
Words come from innermost being (Jn7:38)
Words can draw wisdom to and from others (Pro20:5)
Wise words from the heart are beneficial (Pro16:21-24)
___________________________________________________
Words are deep water (Pro18:4)
Proverbs 18:4 NASB95
4 The words of a man’s mouth are deep waters; The fountain of wisdom is a bubbling brook.
Words matter, words impact, words last, words can hurt, and you cannot take back words. So we need to chose words wisely, and where we get the words we use. Where is the fountain fed from?
Words are deep water (Pro18:4)
Words come from innermost being (Jn7:38)
John 7:38 NASB95
38 “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’ ”
Now in context Jesus is speaking of the Holy Spirit that was to come. And in looking at the living water, where does it come from? 1. It comes from belief, 2. it comes from Scripture, 3. it comes from your innermost being, so in other words your heart.
Words are deep water (Pro18:4)
Words come from innermost being (Jn7:38)
Words can draw wisdom to and from others (Pro20:5)
Proverbs 20:5 NASB95
5 A plan in the heart of a man is like deep water, But a man of understanding draws it out.
Understanding leads to wisdom, wisdom draws out the deep waters the deep waters that are in the heart. It can make the heart known or bring about a heart change. It can be very beneficial.
Words are deep water (Pro18:4)
Words come from innermost being (Jn7:38)
Words can draw wisdom to and from others (Pro20:5)
Wise words from the heart are beneficial (Pro16:21-24)
Proverbs 16:21–22 NASB95
21 The wise in heart will be called understanding, And sweetness of speech increases persuasiveness. 22 Understanding is a fountain of life to one who has it, But the discipline of fools is folly.
Proverbs 16:23–24 NASB95
23 The heart of the wise instructs his mouth And adds persuasiveness to his lips. 24 Pleasant words are a honeycomb, Sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.
So may you be wise in heart, and your speech be sweetness that opens the door to persuasiveness because the words you use. For when you bring understanding to some one, the words maybe a fountain of life! Eternal life.
May the words of our lips be like the sweetness of a honeycomb, but be sure your words are honest and true. We want to lead people to come to know Jesus, we want to be persuasive in love.
Understanding is a fountain that is powered by wisdom. Our lips will speak what is in our heart. What we allow into our heart matters.
Words of the fool
Words can build it, they can encourage, edify or they can divide, bring destruction and division. Spoken words and written words (or these days many are written texts) can have the same effect on people, so we need to be careful not to be a fool and use the words of a fool.
_______________________________________
Words can bring strife; or become a snare (Pro18:6-7)
Words can bring salvation, or damnation (Mt10:32-33)
Your words can bring about words from Jesus (Lk12:8)
Words go down to the heart; so don’t be a fool (Pro18:8)

Words can bring strife; or become a snare (Pro18:6-7)
Proverbs 18:6–7 NASB95
6 A fool’s lips bring strife, And his mouth calls for blows. 7 A fool’s mouth is his ruin, And his lips are the snare of his soul.
Strife Bible encyclopedia: Vigorous or bitter conflict, clash or discord, antagonism. (expand on the verses some)
Words can bring strife; or become a snare (Pro18:6-7)
Words can bring salvation, or damnation (Mt10:32-33)
Matthew 10:32–33 NASB95
32 “Therefore everyone who confesses Me before men, I will also confess him before My Father who is in heaven. 33 “But whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny him before My Father who is in heaven.
Notice there are words in the denial. This is not just a thought, but chosen words to deny Jesus, which means they know about Jesus but chose their way instead of His way and it leads to their ruin and is a snare to their soul (see Pro18:6-7) we just read.
Words can bring strife; or become a snare (Pro18:6-7)
Words can bring salvation, or damnation (Mt10:32-33)
Your words can bring about words from Jesus (Lk12:8)
Luke 12:8 NASB95
8 “And I say to you, everyone who confesses Me before men, the Son of Man will confess him also before the angels of God;
Our words, our confession can lead to Jesus confession. But still we need to be careful what we allow in.
Words can bring strife; or become a snare (Pro18:6-7)
Words can bring salvation, or damnation (Mt10:32-33)
Your words can bring about words from Jesus (Lk12:8)
Words go down to the heart; so don’t be a fool (Pro18:8)
Proverbs 18:8 NASB95
8 The words of a whisperer are like dainty morsels, And they go down into the innermost parts of the body.
Words may sound good, but does that make them true (Gen3:1-5)? Words may sound good but be taken out of context (Jn3:16; in context with Jn3:15-18); or words can be sound good but be incomplete too, can’t they?
Genesis 3:1 NASB95
1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Indeed, has God said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden’?”
Genesis 3:2–3 NASB95
2 The woman said to the serpent, “From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; 3 but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.’ ”
Genesis 3:4–5 NASB95
4 The serpent said to the woman, “You surely will not die! 5 “For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
That sounds good doesn’t it, it sounds like it could be believable doesn’t it? But it was a partial truth and a partial truth that was hidden with deception.
How about this one.
John 3:16 NASB95
16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
That is a true statement is it not? What does it mean to believe, why do we need to believe? You can’t answer that from this verse, but you can when it is in context
John 3:15–16 NASB95
15 so that whoever believes will in Him have eternal life. 16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
John 3:17–18 NASB95
17 “For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. 18 “He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
While Jn3:16 is true, does it not need to be expounded on in context on why you need to believe. To answer just with Jn3:16 is not wise is it (Pro18:13) So we need to slow down and listen (Jam1:19)
James 1:19 NASB95
19 This you know, my beloved brethren. But everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger;
The man who does not listen is a fool, and it a folly and a shame to Him. We need to listen more than we speak. Then when we do speak we need to speak words of wisdom, words of truth, words of life. For in words are life and death.

Words: It’s a matter of life and death

Have you ever heard anyone say, or sing, you’re killing me with your words? Words can bring life, words can bring death, so words are a matter of life and death, so don’t be killing someone with your words.

Faith comes from words (Rom:10:17)
Everything was created by words (Gen1:3; Jn1:4)

Life and death in the tongue (Pro18:21)
Proverbs 18:21 NASB95
21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.
Eat the fruit of life, eternal life!
Life and death in the tongue (Pro18:21)
Faith comes from words (Rom:10:17)
Words of eternal life comes from hearing, hearing the right things, the true things.
Romans 10:17 NASB95
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.
Life and death in the tongue (Pro18:21)
Faith comes from words (Rom:10:17)
Everything was created by words (Gen1:3; Jn1:4)
Genesis 1:3 NASB95
3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.
God spoke and it happened. God’s words will bring light into the darkness. God’s words can bring life and be the light of men.
John 1:4 NASB95
4 In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men.
So how can our tongue bring life to men?
Bring the words of Jesus!
Bring words of encouragement!
Bring words of correction
For Jesus words are words of eternal life; so bring those words
Life and death in the tongue (Pro18:21)
Faith comes from words (Rom:10:17)
Everything was created by words (Gen1:3)
Words bring eternal life (Jn6:68)
John 6:68 NASB95
68 Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life.
In the midst when many were leaving because they were hard words to hear, may we be ones who cleave to the true words that bring eternal life to us and to the hearers who are willing to receive and believe.
That leads me to our next one.
Life and death in the tongue (Pro18:21)
Faith comes from words (Rom:10:17)
Everything was created by words (Gen1:3)
Words bring eternal life (Jn6:68)
Words can be encouraging (1The5:11)
1 Thessalonians 5:11 NASB95
11 Therefore encourage one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing.
because we know there is life and death in the power of the tongue. Faith that comes from hearing can bring life, eternal life, so may our words be true, may our words be encouraging. May they intended and purposed.
Life and death in the tongue (Pro18:21)
Faith comes from words (Rom:10:17)
Everything was created by words (Gen1:3)
Words bring eternal life (Jn6:68)
Words can be encouraging (1The5:11)
Words can be inspired and purposeful (2Tim3:16-17)
2 Timothy 3:16 NASB95
16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness;
2 Timothy 3:17 NASB95
17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.
Why are words, the right words, with the right intentions important? Because they are profitable and they are equipping!
We are not done yet, I wanted to bring in some more New Testament and what it has to say about the power of the tongue.

Power of the Tongue

There is power in the tongue, power of bringing blessings, or bringing curses. May we take a minute and example one more passage of scripture (Jam3:1-12)
James 3:1–2 NASB95
1 Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we will incur a stricter judgment. 2 For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body as well.
James 3:3–4 NASB95
3 Now if we put the bits into the horses’ mouths so that they will obey us, we direct their entire body as well. 4 Look at the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by strong winds, are still directed by a very small rudder wherever the inclination of the pilot desires.
James 3:5–6 NASB95
5 So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things. See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire! 6 And the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity; the tongue is set among our members as that which defiles the entire body, and sets on fire the course of our life, and is set on fire by hell.
James 3:7–8 NASB95
7 For every species of beasts and birds, of reptiles and creatures of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by the human race. 8 But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison.
James 3:9–10 NASB95
9 With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God; 10 from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way.
James 3:11–12 NASB95
11 Does a fountain send out from the same opening both fresh and bitter water? 12 Can a fig tree, my brethren, produce olives, or a vine produce figs? Nor can salt water produce fresh.
Power of the tongue; it brings:
Judgment (v.1)
Can cause people to stumble (V.2)
It can direct the whole body (v.3)
It is small and powerful (v.5)
It can set things a blaze, set a fire (vv.5-6)
blessings and curses come from it (vv.9-10)
Now consider what kind of fountain are you (vv.11-12)
Maybe read (vv.11-12 again for clarification)
James 3:11–12 NASB95
11 Does a fountain send out from the same opening both fresh and bitter water? 12 Can a fig tree, my brethren, produce olives, or a vine produce figs? Nor can salt water produce fresh.
Let the Living Water live in you and come flowing out from you. Remember where we started today and may we close out with that.
John 7:38 NASB95
38 “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’ ”
