Jesus sees the need of people

Jesus see’s the need of all the people, even when people don’t acknowledge the need or see the need themselves. While the Jews were the recipients of many of the blessings of Jesus, they were not alone as you will see in our passage this morning.

We know that Jesus was sent to seek and save the lost according to Lk19:10, but Jesus focus during his earthly ministry was the house of Israel

5 These twelve Jesus sent out after instructing them: “Do not go in the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter any city of the Samaritans; 6 but rather go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
That is seen in His sending of the Apostles during the limited commission. You can also see that in our recent look of the Phoenician woman in Mk7:24-30.

What did you see, what did you notice, what sticks out to you?
As we look at our passage today, I would like to look at the following things.
The Narrative and miracle
Some comparisons with feeding the 5000
And a focus on the satisfying power of Jesus!

Being good bible students in a bible class it is good to pull from the scripture the story (narrative) and the meaning of the story as explained withing the story itself.

Previously in the area He healed the demonic named Legion and was asked to leave the area, then when He returned they recognized Him and brought all the sick etc. to Him and He healed them all (See Mk6:53-56) and touched people in a very personal way (Mk7:32-37)

Notice when you look at the passage in (vv.1-3) you see the crowd, large crowd, in some versions it says multitude is there, but notice the timing too.
How long had the people been with Him (v.2)?
How did Jesus feel about them (v.2)
What was Jesus concern (v.3)?
OK, time to move on to the miracle itself now:

The Miracle
Brought on by Jesus compassion (Mk8:2-3)
Jesus had compassion, and we have seen that before and will see it again. May we learn from His compassion to be people of compassion that leads us to action when we see a need.
Unforeseen by His disciples (Mk8:4)
They did not pay attention that Jesus was implying the same thing as He did when He met the need of the 5000 previously. He saw and met the need then, and was going to do the same here.
The provision (Mk8:5-7); the prayer (Mk8:6-7)
seven loaves and a few fish
In usual fashion Jesus offered thanks, may we follow that lead always.

The numbers (Mk8:9; Mt15:38)
And similar to feeding the 5000; here we see the 4000 and Jesus sent them away afterwards.

Some comparisons

Comparisons are a good thing, right? So may we compare two similar, but the same miracle.
Location and people:
5000: In Galilee near villages and to the Jews (Jn6:14-15; Mk6:36)
4000: In Decapolis in the wilderness and Gentiles (Mk7:31; Mk8:3-4; Mk8:1)
Timing:
5000: They were with Jesus one day (Mk6:35)
4000: They were with Jesus three days (Mk8:2)
Provision:
5000: 5 loaves, 2 fish (Mk5:41)
4000: 7 loaves; a few fish (Mk8:5-7)
The numbers:
5000: well, 5000 plus women children with 12 baskets left over (Mt14:21; Mk6:43)
4000: 4000, not counting women/children with 7 large baskets left over (Mt15:38; Mk8:8)
I know we have covered a lot already, but this is not where I really wanted to focus today, I want to us to step back and look at the bigger picture the satisfying power of Jesus then, the satisfying power of Jesus found in the gospel!

The Satisfying Power of Jesus

Jesus wants to satisfy not our wants but our needs. Nothing has changed for God does not change, He is the same yesterday, today and forever. So may we journey at looking at the satisfying power of Jesus then and now.
Seeing the satisfying power of Jesus in our passage
Jesus sees the picture of the need “nothing to eat” (Mk8:2)
We can see the revelation of love “I have compassion for the people” (Mk8:2)
We see the consideration of grace “If I send them away hungry . . . (MK8:3)
We see the question of helplessness “where will anyone find . . .” (Mk8:4)
We see the command to trust “He directed the people to sit down” (Mk8:6)
We see the manifestation of power “those who ate were satisfied (Mk8:8)
And finally the superabundance of supply “ and they picked up seven large baskets” (Mk8:8)

Here we have looked at Jesus saw the need for the 4000 and gave them bread to satisfy their need. Jesus feeds the millions with the bread of life today through the gospel message.
While we have looked at the feeding of the 5000 and today at the 4000 there is a difference we have looked at two when we compared the two. With the 4000 it is foreshadow of the grace to be offered to all men, both Jew and Gentile with the gospel message for God is not the God of partiality (Rom2:11)
