Introduction

Luke 1:46-55
Luke 1:46–55 AV 1873
46 And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, 47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. 48 For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. 49 For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; And holy is his name. 50 And his mercy is on them that fear him From generation to generation. 51 He hath shewed strength with his arm; He hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. 52 He hath put down the mighty from their seats, And exalted them of low degree. 53 He hath filled the hungry with good things; And the rich he hath sent empty away. 54 He hath holpen his servant Israel, In remembrance of his mercy, 55 (As he spake to our fathers), To Abraham, and to his seed for ever.

Living the Attitude of Praise

Luke 1:46–49 AV 1873
46 And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, 47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. 48 For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. 49 For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; And holy is his name.

Mary points to the attitude of her soul and spirit.

Luke 1:46 AV 1873
46 And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,
Mary is, within the core of psyche making God big! This word for “soul” here is where we get our word psyche from. Exultation to the Lord is a choice.
Luke 1:47 AV 1873
47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
Her spirit is filled with exuberance of who God is.

The “why” of her jubilance:

Luke 1:48 AV 1873
48 For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
l

She knew who she was compared to the task God had for her, she was nothing. But because God was going to work through this, she was to be blessed of Him.

Hannah says the same thing in her prayer in
1 Samuel 2:1 AV 1873
1 And Hannah prayed, and said, My heart rejoiceth in the Lord, Mine horn is exalted in the Lord: My mouth is enlarged over mine enemies; Because I rejoice in thy salvation.
1 Sam. 2:
1 Samuel 2:1–10 AV 1873
1 And Hannah prayed, and said, My heart rejoiceth in the Lord, Mine horn is exalted in the Lord: My mouth is enlarged over mine enemies; Because I rejoice in thy salvation. 2 There is none holy as the Lord: For there is none beside thee: Neither is there any rock like our God. 3 Talk no more so exceeding proudly; Let not arrogancy come out of your mouth: For the Lord is a God of knowledge, And by him actions are weighed. 4 The bows of the mighty men are broken, And they that stumbled are girt with strength. 5 They that were full have hired out themselves for bread; And they that were hungry ceased: So that the barren hath born seven; And she that hath many children is waxed feeble. 6 The Lord killeth, and maketh alive: He bringeth down to the grave, and bringeth up. 7 The Lord maketh poor, and maketh rich: He bringeth low, and lifteth up. 8 He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, And lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, To set them among princes, And to make them inherit the throne of glory: For the pillars of the earth are the Lord’s, And he hath set the world upon them. 9 He will keep the feet of his saints, And the wicked shall be silent in darkness; For by strength shall no man prevail. 10 The adversaries of the Lord shall be broken to pieces; Out of heaven shall he thunder upon them: The Lord shall judge the ends of the earth; And he shall give strength unto his king, And exalt the horn of his anointed.
Identity is so vital, but when we find our identity in the singleness of a task we cease to identify as God’s own, but rather we belong to our task. It then has become our God.

Her blessed title came from God’s mighty work and His Holy name

Luke 1:49 AV 1873
49 For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; And holy is his name.
This is also a repeat from Hannah’s prayer
lk 1:
1 Samuel 2:2 AV 1873
2 There is none holy as the Lord: For there is none beside thee: Neither is there any rock like our God.
She references herself 5 times in this whole passage
She references God and His work 17 times in this passage.
It is clear on what person she placed the most importance. There are so many Christians who will sing the I, Me, Me, Me, I song but not sing the Hallelujah Song!

Loving God’s Greatness

God’s mercy is hinged up on a respect for Him. . . lifting Him up and not myself.

Luke 1:50 AV 1873
50 And his mercy is on them that fear him From generation to generation.

By His Strength. . .

Luke 1:51–53 AV 1873
51 He hath shewed strength with his arm; He hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. 52 He hath put down the mighty from their seats, And exalted them of low degree. 53 He hath filled the hungry with good things; And the rich he hath sent empty away.
lk. 1:5
Scattered the proud.
Put down (defeated) the ones we could not.
Exalted all of us who do not deserve it.
John 3:36 AV 1873
36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.
Fed the hungry and taken away from the wealthy.

Leaning of His Promises

He has helped Israel

Luke 1:54 AV 1873
54 He hath holpen his servant Israel, In remembrance of his mercy,
-in the past
-in the present w/ the Messiah
-in the future through His deliverance

He spoke to our fathers

Romans 4:3 AV 1873
3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.
Genesis 15:6 AV 1873
6 And he believed in the Lord; and he counted it to him for righteousness.

Conclusion

No one ever did antying for God without living with an attitude of praise, loving God’s greatness and leaning on His promises. I must find my identity in Christ alone, not in a single ministry, a job or a look. I want to be used of God! Do you? Do you want this church to be used of God?
We must live for God’s glory by living with an attitude of praise, loving God’s greatness more than my own and leaning on His promises.
