For the next two Sundays and Christmas Day we’re going to look at the very first Christmas songs: Mary’s song, Zechariah’s song, and the song of the angels. Because of all the ‘ingredients’ of Christmas, praise is one of the most essential. And as we consider Mary’s song this Sunday, we see that praising God is not dependent on our current state or circumstances. In fact, the more humble and lowly we are, the more reason we have to praise him for his greatness. Because He sent his Son in order to lift up the humble – to exalt them. And our response, like Mary’s, is not to exalt ourselves, but to exalt and magnify the Lord. How can we do that this Christmas and the coming New Year?
