Romans Bible Study

Look at Paul’s opening mostly describing himself:
Servant, Apostle, Called, Set Apart. Why?
For the Gospel = the message of good news from God centered on His Son. and 9
Gospel of Good News is used 4 times in his opening
If we have good news what do we do with it?
How did this good news come about is our question tonight
First it came through the fall of Adam and Eve
Second, flood
Third, tears of a people Israel
Fourth it came through the Exodus
Fifth it came through the law
Sixth through the covenant with Israel
Seventh through the constant sin of a nation
This entire story we call the Holy Scriptures, the history of Israel written down and passed through generations, containing threads of prophecy concerning one to come.
The origin of the gospel is God
This is God’s revelation to us. We cannot know it apart from Him telling us his plan. We are a part of that plan.
Apostles didn’t invent it
This is the basis of our evangelism: we have a message from God and it is good news
The test of the gospel is Scripture
The scriptures bear witness to Jesus and Isaiah 53
The Old Testament is brought forth and the New Testament captures His story
Paul reasons with the Jews first then the Gentiles that Christ must die and then be resurrected. Paul witnesses the scriptures witness of Jesus
The substance of the gospel is Jesus Christ
He is the door that throws open wide the the understanding of the Holy Scriptures
Born of the seed of David: trace his roots in Matthew and Luke
He became and He was declared according to the flesh and according to the Spirit of Holiness through what medium? The resurrection of the dead.
Before the resurrection He was humble and lowly in Spirit
After the resurrection He reigns supreme with power on high to judge the living and the dead
The message of the gospel is for all nations
Paul first mentions himself and us: through grace and apostleship as if to say, “I didnt deserve it.” But neither do you.
He also affirms the Jew and Gentile, learned and unlearned. He loves his people, but he is called to a larger platform
He states this gospel is universal
We then, must also, forgo any tribe or tongue pride of race, nation, caste or class, and acknowledge the gospel is for everyone without distinction or exception.
The purpose of the gospel is obedient faith
It is not possible to obedient to the faith and not surrender to Jesus as Lord.
That is His teachings, His leading and the Holy Spirits rebuke and correction
We cannot kiss the cross around our neck and then do as we please
The goal of the gospel is the honour of Christ’s name
God has exalted Him to the highest place and has given Him the name that is above every name, in order that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord of all
We should be as anxious as Paul that the name of Jesus is honored and and give glory due Him
Yes evangelize, yes love, but never forget the zeal for the Lord
Luke 1:68–79 NKJV
“Blessed is the Lord God of Israel, For He has visited and redeemed His people, And has raised up a horn of salvation for us In the house of His servant David, As He spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets, Who have been since the world began, That we should be saved from our enemies And from the hand of all who hate us, To perform the mercy promised to our fathers And to remember His holy covenant, The oath which He swore to our father Abraham: To grant us that we, Being delivered from the hand of our enemies, Might serve Him without fear, In holiness and righteousness before Him all the days of our life. “And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Highest; For you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways, To give knowledge of salvation to His people By the remission of their sins, Through the tender mercy of our God, With which the Dayspring from on high has visited us; To give light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, To guide our feet into the way of peace.”
