Title: Scripture Memory

Text:

Series: Spiritual Disciplines

Introduction:

The goal - “godliness”
The warning - Identity is established already

What is it saying?

(1) We should not sin against the Lord.

[The Lord deserves unequivocal devotion] - might not sin against thee
This is a bigger deal than man of us take it to be. What is sin, and how is it manifested today?
Illustration:
A young man in his late teens had a particular job. He would care for the house of one of his countries leaders. This man continued to get promoted until he was put in charge of his bosses entire estate. During the course of his work one day, a woman in the house looked at this young man and asked if they could have a relationship. The primary problem was that this woman was already married to his boss. Joseph said, “How can I do this great wickedness and sin against God?”
Transition:
(1) We should not sin against the Lord

(2) We should not blame others for our sin.

Sinning against God is a very personal matter - that I
Taking personal responsibility for sin is important.
Transition:
(1) We should not sin against the Lord
(2) We should not blame others for our sin

(3) We should teach our hearts and not obey our hearts.

Our heart is to be influenced and not followed - mine heart
Our hearts are to be challenged by the scriptures and not followed.
Proverbs 23:19 KJV 1900
Hear thou, my son, and be wise, And guide thine heart in the way.
Transition:
(1) We should not sin against the Lord
(2) We should not blame others for our sin
(3) We should teach our hearts and not obey our hearts
(4) We should treat our hearts like a storage location

(4) We should treat our hearts like a storage location.

The heart is a storage location - have I hid
There are many things that unintentionally enter out hearts; but there are also things that are to be intentionally put into our hearts. Sometimes we focus so much on what should NOT be going in that we neglect what should be going in.
Illustration:
There are a variety of diets. One of the most famous ones was the Atkins diet. This is a low carb diet, where you cut out certain kinds of foods like bread.
Rather than thinking of this like a diet, think of it more like a meal plan. With a diet, we are focused on what not to let in. With a meal plan we are focused on what should be going in.
Transition:
(1) We should not sin against the Lord
(2) We should not blame others for our sin
(3) We should teach our hearts and not obey our hearts
(4) We should treat our hearts like a storage location

(5) The Bible is what guides us to not sin against God.

The word of God is that which distinctly leads us to unequivocal devotion to the Lord - Thy word
The word of God is that which distinctly leads us to unequivocal devotion to the Lord - Thy word

Principle: We should save the word of God in our hearts so that we do not sin against God.

We should save the word of God in our hearts so that we do not sin against God.
The word of God is to be stored up in our hearts so that we would be people who are devoted to the Lord in the way we live.
Illustration:
In the fifth installment of the Rocky Balboa series, there is a young man called Tommy Lee. He was an up and coming star. The thing about Tommy Lee is that he was a boxer in real life. In real life, Tommy Lee, was diagnosed with HIV. After he met a particular girlfriend, he stopped taking the necessary medications and died a premature death...
Similarly, there are many Christians that succumb to sin in their lives because they have refused to take in the word of God. They have given in to the temptation of other women, pornography, anger, alcoholism...

Problem: The heart of the problem is sin, and sin is the problem of the heart.

The heart of the problem is sin, and sin is the problem of the heart.
(1) “heart” -
(2) “sin” -
So, we know what we should do so that we don’t sin against God, but we have sin that prevents us from doing this acceptably.
Illustration:
We were with our friends in Alabama this past summer. During our time we went to the ocean. One of the toys we were using to play in the sand was a bucket. This particular bucket was cracked, and when we would try to get ocean water in it, we had to hurry back before all of the water drained out of the bucket.
Mankind has a similar problem in that he may try to accomplish something, but he is trying to accomplish it with a broken tool. Man can try to stop sinning against God but he is trying to do so with a sinful heart. It is impossible.

Christ: Christ did what we could never do.

Christ did what we could never do.
(1) Jesus never sinned against God. -
Hebrews 4:15 KJV 1900
For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
(2) Jesus knew the word of God in his heart. - Sermon on the Mount in
(3) Jesus used the word of God in his life. - ,
(4) Jesus is the ONLY One who has perfectly obeyed ;
John 15:10 KJV 1900
If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.
(5) Jesus is the ONLY One who can help us to obey , ,
Dependence upon Christ:
Hebrews 8:10 KJV 1900
For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:
Hebrews 10:16 KJV 1900
This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;

Practical Measures: Because we have Jesus as our Savior, we should memorize scripture.

Because we have Jesus as our Savior, we should memorize scripture.
(1) Again: You must accept Jesus Christ as your Savior.
(2) When you have Jesus Christ as your Savior you are a new creature with new desires.
a desire to not sin against the Lord -
(3) These new desires come from God’s Holy Spirit living inside of you. , ,
(4) Because of Christ’s Spirit, you can and must memorize scripture so that you don’t sin against God.

1. Requires intentional time

2. Requires overcoming excuses (many of our excuses reveal our lack of desire)

3. Requires persistence

Illustration:
One man said, “What if I offered you $1000.00 for ever verse you memorized in the next 7 days?”
One man said, “What if I offered you $1000.00 for ever verse you memorized in the next 7 days?”
This reveals that typically, scripture memory is a problem of motivation.
Sin is a bigger deal that we take it to be.
Accept personal responsibility for your sin.
See how you cannot overcome sin by your wicked heart.
See what Christ has done so that you can live with power over sin.
Commit to memorize scripture as a defense against sinning against the Lord.
Vance Havner - “The alternative to discipline is disaster.”
