Like some evil, twisted holiday, the day arrived when all the enemies of the Jews were supposed to attack them.
But that’s not what happened, the Jews overpowered their enemies.
When have we heard this before?
Egypt?
Per Mordecai’s decree, the Jews gathered together and “laid hands” on those that wanted to harm them.
Egypt?
Per Mordecai’s decree, the Jews gathered together and “laid hands” on those that wanted to harm them.
This is not what most of us think of with the laying on of hands.
No one could withstand the Jews because they feared them.
Like Jericho
God did not protect His people through an obvious intervention, but by putting the fear of them in their enemies.
Leave it to politicians to switch sides when it’s advantageous!
They were all set to destroy the Jews when Haman had power.
Now Mordecai is now a big man in Babylon, and the politicians don’t want to get on his bad side.
So they help the Jews, and the Jews destroyed their enemies.
And in the capital city, those who attacked the Jews and were killed by them included the ten sons of Haman.
It wasn’t just Haman who was destroyed by his hatred and arrogance, but his family as well.
Although they killed their enemies, they did not take their plunder.
Mordecai’s letter said to take the plunder, but in the capital city they did not.
Scripture gives no explanation as to why.
But it reminds me of what we talked about last time.
Jesus tells us to accept the insult and reply with less force.
Here, even though they could, the Jews did not take all the revenge they could have.
Once the king finds out how things went, he gives Esther the good news, 500 dead in Shushan and who knows how man in the other provinces.
Then the king repeats his offer to Esther.
Just like when she asked him to the banquet, What do you want?
Like the old Super Bowl commercials.
Esther, your people have won, you’ve destroyed your enemies, not what are you going to do?
Only Esther does not say, “I’m going to Disney World!”
This is NOT Disney World, especially for those who hate the Jews.
One more day.
One more day to defend themselves against their enemies.
That’s what Esther asks for.
That and let the ten sons of Haman be hanged.
Why she wanted to hang ten dead men?
As with King Saul, it is a sign of disgrace to have their bodies defiled.
Second day, and the Jews in Shushan defend themselves again.
All together 75,000 enemies are killed, but the Jews took none of their plunder.
Then they rested and made a feast to celebrate their victory.
So all the Jews celebrate with feasting and gladness.
Those in Shushan on the 15th while the rest on the 14th.
Esther 9:20-32
So Mordecai calls a two-day holiday.
For the two days the Jews celebrated their victory.
So Mordecai calls a two-day holiday.
The first day in the provinces and the second in the citadel.
The Jews were to feast, share presents and give gifts to the poor.
This celebration was not about our enjoyment, but about helping those who needed it.
Just as God had helped the Jews when they needed it.
The Jews accepted the custom in celebration for what God had done through Esther and Mordecai.
This holiday is called Purim since Haman cast the Pur or lot to pick the day of their destruction.
This holiday is called Purim since Haman cast the Pur or lot to pick the day of their destruction.
This holiday is still celebrated today.
It is
So the king made Mordecai second only to him.
Mordecai gained what Haman wanted, but without the deceit.
Just as Joseph overcame those who were against him to become second in Egypt.
God always answers prayer.
It may not be in the time or manner you want, or even think is best, but He will answer in the time and manner He knows is best.
We should celebrate when God saves us from our enemies.
Not just ourselves, but helping others as well.
You’re deliverance may not be as spectacular as Esther & Mordecai’s
It may not involve thousands of people, or even being saved from death.
But we should thank God for all that He does.
We should celebrate as He wants us to.
We should share as He commands.
And we should glorify Him for what He has done.
