John 1:45–51 NASB95
Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found Him of whom Moses in the Law and also the Prophets wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” Nathanael said to him, “Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!” Nathanael said to Him, “How do You know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” Nathanael answered Him, “Rabbi, You are the Son of God; You are the King of Israel.” Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” And He said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see the heavens opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”
Why does Jesus call himself the son of man?
Two reasons:
He is human.
One of the things we spoke of him this morning was that he is fully God and fully man.
Without Jesus being both, we don’t have salvation.
200%
This is a mystery. Just like the Trinity, but it is a mystery that is necessary for our salvation.
We accept this by faith.
Jesus is the Son of Man of .
Turn there with me and lets look at this passage.
Daniel 7:9–14 NASB95
“I kept looking Until thrones were set up, And the Ancient of Days took His seat; His vesture was like white snow And the hair of His head like pure wool. His throne was ablaze with flames, Its wheels were a burning fire. “A river of fire was flowing And coming out from before Him; Thousands upon thousands were attending Him, And myriads upon myriads were standing before Him; The court sat, And the books were opened. “Then I kept looking because of the sound of the boastful words which the horn was speaking; I kept looking until the beast was slain, and its body was destroyed and given to the burning fire. “As for the rest of the beasts, their dominion was taken away, but an extension of life was granted to them for an appointed period of time. “I kept looking in the night visions, And behold, with the clouds of heaven One like a Son of Man was coming, And He came up to the Ancient of Days And was presented before Him. “And to Him was given dominion, Glory and a kingdom, That all the peoples, nations and men of every language Might serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion Which will not pass away; And His kingdom is one Which will not be destroyed.
While living in Babylon, Daniel is given several prophetic visions.
The one we are looking at here beginning in verse 9 and going through verse 14 is Daniel’s vision of the throne room of God.
It is the heavenly portal.
Look in verse 9
Daniel 7:9 NASB95
“I kept looking Until thrones were set up, And the Ancient of Days took His seat; His vesture was like white snow And the hair of His head like pure wool. His throne was ablaze with flames, Its wheels were a burning fire.
The Ancient of Days refers to the eternality of God.
Remember this is a vision. Its a prophetic vision, so what you are reading is pictures.
The White Hair is meant to give the understanding that God is all wise and able to judge from His throne.
And thats precisely whats happens in verse 10
Daniel 7:10 NASB95
“A river of fire was flowing And coming out from before Him; Thousands upon thousands were attending Him, And myriads upon myriads were standing before Him; The court sat, And the books were opened.
There is coming a day of judgment when all will stand before God Himself.
Thousands upon thousands of people.
The Books will be opened..
What
books?
Th book by which we are judged.
The Word of God
This is why what we do here on Sunday morning, Sunday Night, Wednesday, Thursday is so important.
We should never give way to anything else.
The Book of life.
Has your name been written there.
Has Christ saved you.
On that day, you will know, if not before
Look at verse 11-12
Daniel 7:11–12 NASB95
“Then I kept looking because of the sound of the boastful words which the horn was speaking; I kept looking until the beast was slain, and its body was destroyed and given to the burning fire. “As for the rest of the beasts, their dominion was taken away, but an extension of life was granted to them for an appointed period of time.
Some believe this is referring to the anti christ at the end of time.
My personal belief here is that he is speaking of evil in general altogether in the future that will be judged.
Verse 12 speaks of the empires that he has spoken of in the rest of the book.
Their authority has been taken away, but they have been allowed to continue living for a short time, until they will find themselves in the same place as the rest of evil doers.
Suffice it to say that verse 11-12 states that God will judge all evil.
Look in verse 13
Daniel 7:13 NASB95
“I kept looking in the night visions, And behold, with the clouds of heaven One like a Son of Man was coming, And He came up to the Ancient of Days And was presented before Him.
this is a vision of Jesus Christ.
One like a son of Man was coming.
Couple observations.
Like A Son of Man tells us that this figure is human.
He approaches the Ancient of Days.
Who can do that?
Who is able to waltz right up to the Father.
He given something.
Dominion, glory, and a kingdom (That sounds familiar)
John 3:35 NASB95
“The Father loves the Son and has given all things into His hand.
1 Corinthians 15:27 NASB95
For He has put all things in subjection under His feet. But when He says, “All things are put in subjection,” it is evident that He is excepted who put all things in subjection to Him.
Ephesians 1:20–22 NASB95
which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church,
Philippians 2:9–10 NASB95
For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
Revelation 1:6 NASB95
and He has made us to be a kingdom, priests to His God and Father—to Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.
He is given this for a purpose.
Daniel 7:14 NASB95
“And to Him was given dominion, Glory and a kingdom, That all the peoples, nations and men of every language Might serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion Which will not pass away; And His kingdom is one Which will not be destroyed.
That sounds familiar as well.
Revelation 7:9–12 NASB95
After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could count, from every nation and all tribes and peoples and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, and palm branches were in their hands; and they cry out with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.” And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures; and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying, Amen, blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might, be to our God forever and ever. Amen.”
So why does Jesus call himself the Son of Man?
Because he is man. Because He is God, and because he has revealed the glory of God to us.
I would add that the Son of Man now sits at the right hand of God.
Acts 7:55–56 NASB95
But being full of the Holy Spirit, he gazed intently into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God; and he said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened up and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.”
Stephen saw him, and one day I pray that you and I will too.
Not only did Stephen see him but John saw him as well.
Revelation 1:12–20 NASB95
Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking with me. And having turned I saw seven golden lampstands; and in the middle of the lampstands I saw one like a son of man, clothed in a robe reaching to the feet, and girded across His chest with a golden sash. His head and His hair were white like white wool, like snow; and His eyes were like a flame of fire. His feet were like burnished bronze, when it has been made to glow in a furnace, and His voice was like the sound of many waters. In His right hand He held seven stars, and out of His mouth came a sharp two-edged sword; and His face was like the sun shining in its strength. When I saw Him, I fell at His feet like a dead man. And He placed His right hand on me, saying, “Do not be afraid; I am the first and the last, and the living One; and I was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of death and of Hades. “Therefore write the things which you have seen, and the things which are, and the things which will take place after these things. “As for the mystery of the seven stars which you saw in My right hand, and the seven golden lampstands: the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.
If anyone would have recognized Jesus, it would have been John.
Here he calls him the Son of Man.
That is, He is the Son of God that comes to take on humanity for us, that we may behold His glory.
