Luke 1:26–38 NLT
26 In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a village in Galilee, 27 to a virgin named Mary. She was engaged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of King David. 28 Gabriel appeared to her and said, “Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you!” 29 Confused and disturbed, Mary tried to think what the angel could mean. 30 “Don’t be afraid, Mary,” the angel told her, “for you have found favor with God! 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32 He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. 33 And he will reign over Israel forever; his Kingdom will never end!” 34 Mary asked the angel, “But how can this happen? I am a virgin.” 35 The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the baby to be born will be holy, and he will be called the Son of God. 36 What’s more, your relative Elizabeth has become pregnant in her old age! People used to say she was barren, but she has conceived a son and is now in her sixth month. 37 For the word of God will never fail.” 38 Mary responded, “I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true.” And then the angel left her.
PRAYER
26 In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s (Mary’s older aunt who was thought to be unable to bear children- mother of John the Baptist) pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a village in Galilee, (poor village of about 300-400 people) 27 to a virgin named Mary. She was engaged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of King David. 28 Gabriel appeared to her and said, “Greetings (Rejoice), favored woman! The Lord is with you!” 29 Confused and disturbed, Mary tried to think what the angel could mean. 30 “Don’t be afraid, Mary,” (I love it when being made of light say that) the angel told her, “for you have found favor with God! (in other words Mary this is a good visit) 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32 He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. 33 And he will reign over Israel forever; his Kingdom will never end!” 34 Mary asked the angel, “But how can this happen? I am a virgin.” (um, understandable question) 35 The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.

PRAYER
What does it mean to say..... “I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true.”
I. DAVID
Now....We forget that without context this appearance makes no sense!
In order to gain context of a world that needs someone to take the throne of David!! we need to know why that means something David.
Notice Mary did not hear all this and then say....”Great! Who’s David?”
David was and is considered the greatest King ‘s Israel ever had, he was the earthy epitome of a priest, warrior king, praying for, fighting for his people.
His kingdom was considered the hight of the Hebrew nation and God had promised that, after him would come another king, one of his defendants that would rule, not just over Israel but all nations.
A God who did not simply impose rule from the outside, but who took us over from the inside; with a reign of peace and counsel.
2 Samuel 7:12–13 NLT
12 For when you die and are buried with your ancestors, I will raise up one of your descendants, your own offspring, and I will make his kingdom strong. 13 He is the one who will build a house—a temple—for my name. And I will secure his royal throne forever.
II Sam. 12:
Isaiah 9:6–7 NLT
6 For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David for all eternity. The passionate commitment of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies will make this happen!
NOW why do we need such a king! Why is this important?
Because all the things the prophet Isaiah mentions we are in dire need of!!!
Wonderful Counselor
FACTS ABOUT INTERNET (Practical Guide to Culture)- John Stonestreet and Ben Kunkle
Each day, 500 million tweets are sent, 4 million hours of content are uploaded to YouTube, 4.3 billion Facebook messages are posted, 6 billion Google searches are conducted, and 205 billion emails are sent.....[but] ...we shouldn’t confuse information with knowledge or knowledge with wisdom.

Each day, 500 million tweets are sent, 4 million hours of content are uploaded to YouTube, 4.3 billion Facebook messages are posted, 6 billion Google searches are conducted, and 205 billion emails are sent.
A Mighty God- in a world of little gods/pursuits that leave us high and dry and empty where is the God that truly saves us from our selves
Everlasting Father - In a world of broken relationships- where we continually seek belonging and embrace- we need an everlasting father- always present!
Prince of Peace - In a world of Chaos (inside us and outside us)- who does into desire a Prince of Peace.
In a world of terrorist in French Christmas Markets or Screaming fights on University Campuses, where a myriad different world-views is circling..we could use a prince of peace.
The endless cycle of idea and action, Endless invention, endless experiment, brings knowledge of motion, but not of stillness; knowledge of speech, but not of silence;
T. S. Eliot
Sound like it was written yesterday! it was written 80 years ago!
II. MARY
It was not different for Mary- in her day there strong ideas of what the future would look like:
how they ought to live under Romans rule, should they fight or submit, was there still hope, was there going to be deliverance.
How should a young woman live in light of an unsure future?
And into this world, in need of counsel, might, peace, connection with God..
- God created everything
-places his greatest, his crowning achievement in the garden
-Adam and Eve say thanks....don’t forget to close the gate behind you on the way out. and the created rejected the creator.
The problem is that the creation works when it is connected to it creator and suffers when it is not.
and the continued story of humanity has been we’ve got this
today it is the story—we’ve got this. And we see the effects today in ourselves and in our world
sin is in ---kids playing with limited toys do not yell your,. its yours, they yell its mine!
I never saw my son sneaking cookies INTO the cookie jar
the result of an I’ve got this “world!!”
Mary finds herself living in the results of an “I’ve Got this” world
The Hebrew nation, time and time again rejecting their Creator, and finding themselves hurting and lost.
II. Nazareth
II. Mary
-small agricultural village
young jewish woman with her life about to start
she has dreams of a future, ready to be married to a good man, a godly man,
and all her dreams are about to collide with a new story,
Mary God has had his eye on you and Mary..
You are going to give birth to a Son the son of the most High.
THE descendant of David that the prophets spoke about!
You will have the honour and privilege of carrying him and calling him YOUR son!
His name will be Jesus! God saves!
III. Who is Jesus
Jesus...
a. Comes in grace (v28-32)
Luke 1:28–32 NLT
28 Gabriel appeared to her and said, “Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you!” 29 Confused and disturbed, Mary tried to think what the angel could mean. 30 “Don’t be afraid, Mary,” the angel told her, “for you have found favor with God! 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32 He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David.
IV. Who is Mary
V. Who are we…when we say yes to Jesus
In - after God created the world and placed humanity in it and said asked for obedience, Humanity said thanks, but no thanks, and what happened after that is what you see.
It is what you see on the news, it is what you see in magazines, in creation as a whole, it is what you witness in yourself during rush hour.
if you have spent any amount of time in a church you know that the Christian worldview is one that believes that at the heart of man is a sin problem.
The we are not ultimately good at our centre, but we are “prone to wander” as the hymn says.
So the idea of following your heart is not really a good motto, since our heart tends to lead us astray.
that from birth, we want to crown ourselves king, and rule over ourselves and those around us.
As I’ve said before, I’ve never heard siblings yelling “that’s yours, that’s yours” or seen one of my children sneak a cookie INTO the cookie jar.
And any worldview that refuses to factor in our inner virus of sin whether it be economical, political, or religious will fail because they are dealing with symptoms. And we see this on a personal level, when we refuse to admit that we are tainted as well.
The reason I start here is because we need to realize that this reality, this world is the world that Jesus is about to step into. And wants to step into.
To a small agricultural village. A nothing on the map.
to a young woman about to start her future. Starry-eyed
We see in the plot-line of God’s redemptive story that we are moving toward something new.
TODAY’s TEXT
So this is how I want to look at todays text.
I want us to look at…
I.What we can learn about Jesus from this story and this proclamation?
II. What we can learn about Mary- (i.e. and how she responds to God?)
I.WHAT CAN WE LEARN ABOUT JESUS (vv.28-32)
A.He Comes in Grace - vv.28,30
v. 28- “Greetings O Favoured one, the Lord is with you”
he repeats the statement in . 30 “you have found favour with God”
when you think of all the ways throughout scripture that angles have greeted people….this is pretty much the best one you can get!! There is no wielding , no fire being called down from heaven,
Literally the word used here, translated favoured in many translations is “grace”- Charis, it is where we get the word for eucharist, the meal of grace.
It is not an issue of Mary living such a perfect life that she ought to be recognized for it or lifted up to a lofty position. It is the echo of Scripture that God’s grace is at work. God has decided to show grace to Mary and bring her into the story of Jesus.
He could use kings and the rich, but instead he choses Mary, living in an obscure village in the sticks, with a future like any other peasant in her area, marriage, motherhood, and typical village life.
And it is from this unlikely place that God will begin his greatest work. and his greatest investment into His creation.
It as if Gabriel is saying, "God’s eyes are on you. He is about to make a move, and wants you to be a part of the plot-line of His redemption of mankind. All that you have grown up listening to and expecting and praying about is about to take place, Mary."
He has not forgotten your people and he has not forgotten you…
“when we think God is farthest from us or has even turned against us, the truth is that he is laying a foundation for greater happiness in our lives. He is plotting for our Joy…it is a sweet and bitter providence”
John Piper
That is what the entire chapter 1 of Luke is proclaiming. That although we cannot see ahead of the twists and turns and the darkness we might experience on personal level or in this case on a national level, He does and he is at work in the midst of the shadows and in spite of them.
Gabriel says, “You will have a child named Jesus (a name that implies deliverance)
He will be great and he will be the “son of the Most High”
B. He is Son of the Most High
Where John the Baptist is referred to as the prophet of the most High, in v. 76 of this chapter, Jesus will be the “Son of the Most High”. (v 32)
the phrase “Most High” was a common phrase used to describe God in the day of Mary, and the significance of the Most High having a Son must have been explosive in Mary’s mind.
In the Jewish mindset a son was born a carbon copy of the original. To proclaim that he would be the Son of the Most High was to imply that this baby was not a military leader, a political leader, nor a religious leader, He was equivalent to YHWH, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob!!
The God who sees and who is at work, and who is about to enter into humanities mess.
That’s why the Apostle could later write in
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
All the attributes of God in creation, and authority can be applied to Jesus, because he is God in human flesh.
Now we can be blown away by what it must have been like to walk with and listen to and to witness the miracles of Jesus.
But we have to shutter at the thought of having the Son of the Most High, the carbon copy the image of the invisible take up residence inside you.
To have God so invade into our circumstance. To have God take up residence not simply among humanity but within it.
It is a proclamation that God does far beyond what we can think or imagine, but that he is so intimately involved in our circumstance that he cannot be ignored.
To Call Jesus most high also tells Mary in her current circumstance that whether it be the mighty hand of Roman Empire, or the terror of King Herod, your own internal fears and failures, He is greater than and closer to you than you might imagine.
And he is above all yet, seeks to be intimately involved in our circumstance.
C. He is coming to reign (vv32b-33)
…And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”
The greatest king the Jewish people. When they talked about a golden age or a good old days, they were talking about the reign of King David.
But more than that God had promised that it was David’s decedent who would become King over Israel and over all nations.
For centuries Israel had wondered about OT promises concerning the a king like King David, a descendant of his who would have an eternal kingdom.
Jesus would fulfil these promised a in Jesus. An earthly descendant of David's family.
We understand from the Bible as a whole, that when Gabriel talks about his kingdom will have no end.
He is not simply talking about it eternal reign but also the vastness of it.
That it is a complete reign overall, that none can escape!
“There is not a square inch in the whole domain of our human existence over which Christ, who is Sovereign over all, does not cry, Mine!”
Abraham Kuyper
The exiled prophet Daniel, sharing his prophetic dream of the promised king says this:
And to him was given dominion
and glory and a kingdom,
Daniel 7:14 NLT
14 He was given authority, honor, and sovereignty over all the nations of the world, so that people of every race and nation and language would obey him. His rule is eternal—it will never end. His kingdom will never be destroyed.
that all peoples, nations, and languages
Daniel 4:17 ESV
17 The sentence is by the decree of the watchers, the decision by the word of the holy ones, to the end that the living may know that the Most High rules the kingdom of men and gives it to whom he will and sets over it the lowliest of men.’
should serve him;
his dominion is an everlasting dominion,
which shall not pass away,
and his kingdom one
that shall not be destroyed.
So what?
(quietly and slowly…)
The coming of Jesus as we portray it at Christmas is warm and cuddly. It portrays an infant king, with cattle that don’t make a noise in his presence, where he wears golden diapers that he doesn't need because he is too holy to poop. All is quiet, because “no crying he makes.”
But make no mistake, the reason for the coming of Jesus is not simply to make us feel warm inside, it is to call us to him and remind us that God is alive and well, and to remind us that just as the shepherds and wise men did, we are called to bow. Either in humble adoration, or in fear and trembling, but scripture makes it clear that we will bow to our creator and God.
Jesus is coming to reign in our hearts and minds and not simply for name sake, not just as royalty on our currency!! but to have a real say and influence over everything we are; in every arena.
And the minute we decide he will not have reign, over our thought life, our identity, how we see ourselves, how we see others, how we see our circumstance, we will settle for lesser gods to bow to and sex, materialism, self hatred will take up residence and poison us.
We are not the exception to the rule. It is universal. He is meant to reign. You and I were not.
He is the vine, we are the branches. we need to stop trying to be the vine. When branches say to the vine we don’t need you, they shrivel up and die. NO EXCEPTION.
Jesus has come as a result of God’s Grace, as God in human flesh walking in our muck, and He has come as a King who is meant to reign, over all and in all.
So how does Mary respond to this proclamation.
This overwhelming news, for which the entire time she must be saying to herself…”Why are you telling me all this?”
II. What we can learn about Mary (vv. 34-38)(i.e. how should we respond to such a God?)
We need to understand that she is taken back before she even hears the news.
According to Jewish custom it was considered unusual to even greet a woman.
So Mary’s surprise makes sense, not only were peasant girls not greeted (it was outside of the custom she was used to), she was greeted by an angel, (which doesn't happen every day- although they are starting to show up a lot lately here), and she was greeted with such an amazing greeting…. “Oh Favoured one!”
And in response to this amazing news of this amazing promise about to be fulfilled in her time and in her body..
Mary did not mention her surprise that the Messiah was to come, but that it would be through her since she was a virgin. And that children are not normally birthed by virgins.
So are you sure you have this right?
Gabriel, basically says, yeah God’s got it covered.
“The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy-the Son of God” - v35
Now. There are some very serious implications as you can imagine.
What would it mean to agree to this?
In the past God has taken great pleasure in bringing children to those who were unable to have children. In fact those children all played a big roll in the ancestors of Jesus.
But this is different than Sarah or Hanna who as far as we know we’re still having sexual relations with their husbands. Those were seemingly against all odds but possible and everyone celebrated when it happened.
This situation with Mary was very different. If she proclaims that she is pregnant it is most likely not going to elicit joy and celebration in everybody.
And more than that, when she explains the way she became pregnant she will get more than a few strange looks.
right!?!?
Because what we just read, is absurd. It is biologically impossible. You check somebody with this story into a institution.
"Oh, I see. How far along are you?"
"Eight months."
"Oh, that's awesome. Boy or girl?"
"Boy."
"Who's the dad?"
"The Holy Spirit. I've never been with a man."
"Ok, I ....just have to make a quick phone call"
It biologically impossible.
It does not happen everyday!
Yet, that's exactly what happened. How do we know?
Since we know it's impossible, since we’re saying it's impossible, look at verse 37. "For nothing will be impossible with God."
It’s one of those moments, one of hundreds, where God basically says, "There is nothing that is impossible for me, nothing. I am not constrained by anything. I am the God, the Creator of all things.”
(Slowly/quietly)
Now…..separated by 2000 years from this event and some traditions that make Mary out to be a cut above the rest of humanity, I think we can often gloss over what it would mean for a 15 year old, a 16 year old girl to respond the way Mary does in v. 38
“I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true.”
But to say yes to Gabriel could mean that Joseph, her betrothed, could label her an adulteress and divorce her, and worse! being accused as an adulteress could carry the death penalty.
She could be shunned by her community and disgraced, lose her future.
In fact we see in the Gospel according to Matthew, 1:19 — that Joseph being a righteous man didn’t want harm or disgrace to come to her, but DID plan on sending her away.
Elizabeth would have been overjoyed to share the news of her pregnancy with Zechariah, they had been praying for it for years, they were married.
Mary would not have the same excitement to tell Joseph. To see his face move from the pain of the news, to the anger of hearing the explanation that it;’s the Holy Spirits fault, the work of God.
I’ve sat across from people who have are walking in blatant sin and have told me it was God’s will and they’ve prayed about it and feel peace about it, so its ok!
Mary is doing the opposite. She IS walking a god fearing, god loving life and as a result of obedience will be seen as having an affair in the eyes of the law. Will be seen as someone who has disregarded God and made light of it, and made Joseph a laughing stock.
So how can she so easily say yes to this?
First off, she ….
A. Her life was not her own
As a young girl growing up as a descendant of Abraham she seemed to see herself as a child of the living God and seemingly ready to go and do whatever he would call on her to do.
That is one of the things that seem so surprising here compared to our story last week with Zechariah. Rather than pushing back in surprise and disbelief, Mary seems unsurprised by the news, just surprised that she would be the one God would want to use.
To say that she was the servant or bondservant was to say that her freedom and identity did not come from what she had planned for her future.
Her identity was not caught up in how she was perceived by others.
And her joy was caught up in doing the will of God.
She was willing to take a sledge hammer to everything her culture and most likely her family held in high esteem, for the joy of obedience to God.
And so she can say ““I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true.””
It is a request!!
Not OK, if you need to.
She is saying please. If it is for God’s purposes, PLEASE let it be to me according to your word.
Mary understood that her life was not her own.
And related to that is the fact that she knew God’s story.
B. She knew God’s Story
She had an understanding that ancient promises were being fulfilled and the story that she was being invited into.
take a look at vv46-55
This is a poem of Mary that has become known in some traditions as the Magnificat coming from the Latin tradition meaning magnifies.
Talk about a song with perspective!!
From the past to the present to the future, from the highest to the lowest, she seems to have a very robust understanding of what God has been up to and what he is doing.
Let’s read it.
Luke 1:46–55 ESV
46 And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, 48 for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed; 49 for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. 50 And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation. 51 He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts; 52 he has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate; 53 he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. 54 He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, 55 as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his offspring forever.”
Beautiful!
What is interesting about the song is not only the wisdom of it, but it is a string of thoughts and promises and proclamations from the Old Testament.
One specifically sung by Hanna (the mother of Samuel) in
Both Hannah and Mary are mothers rejoicing at the birth of an unexpected child. Hannah praises God that he has seen fit to end the curse of her barrenness, while Mary glorifies the Lord because he has chosen her to bear the promised Messiah.
As a response to God’s goodness Hanna gave her son to the Ministry at the Temple as the mediator between God and the people of Israel and Mary seems to understand that her Son, the Son of the Most High, will never truly belong to her and will be forever in the service of his and her Heavenly Father.
It could be that each knew, to her sorrow, that she would have to give up her son one day.
Yet with joy she proclaims, her adoration and love to be obedient and rely on God. and to trust him.
Her take on history and her future are all seen with the eyes of one who wants to walk in the middle of God’s will. To be obedient regardless of the circumstances.
That the joy and identity she finds in obeying her Saviour, far outweighs the favour of men.
And that he shows strength to the humble, mercy to the weak, He has power over rulers and authorities, he provides our needs, and he is trustworthy.
And she would rather be written into His story than the story she can create for herself or that her culture could create for her.
PAUSE
So let’s leave leave with this....
III. What would it mean for us to say this Jesus- May everything you have said about me come true.
For us to put aside the idea of a God way out there. Above and beyond.
To engage with a very present Jesus who walks among us. Knowing it may bring shame, discomfort.
Why does it mean to say let it be to ME according to your word.
in the areas of what we do with our time, how we conduct ourselves in private, what we do with our bodies when it comes to substance abuse or sexuality, how fundamentally we see our lives.
Are they our own or are they God’s?
Who do You belong to?
Because that will drastically change our perspective when God’s asks something of us.
It will either come off as advice to take under consideration or we will respond by saying, I am the servant of the Lord, let it be according to your word.
See Mary can teach us about what it means to be a disciple!
You're being discipled. It's what narrative are you buying into? What story do you actually believe?
Some of us have been happy to live lives of very little discontent. To be comfortable and to take Jesus on his offer of salvation, and sit back until his return. To still rule over our decisions and rather than pray may it be done to me according to your will, we would pray “please change your will”.
I do not know what he has called you to specifically, but I know he is a much better king than you are.
And I know the havoc that can take place when we refuse to let him reign. The poison in our hearts, the brokenness we leave behind, the denial we live in when we refuse to say, Your will be done!
And the starting point for healing for you and repairing brokenness that you have created from trying to clean up the mess yourself, is to say May everything you have said about me come true.
PAUSE
CONCLUSION:
Some of you are walking through horror right now. You are hurting and broken, and unsure of what the future brings, when it comes to feeling alone and feeling shame.
What does it mean in your situation to say “I am your servant. EVEN in this!! I don’t know why you have chosen me to walk through this, but You are God and I am not, let it be to me according to your word.
And because I know the story you are inviting me into. And because my life belongs to you. I will magnify your name in my life and in my will.
PAUSE
God is not calling us to some flakey blissful religion.
And I am not suggesting we walk around in denial that things are rough, that there isn’t real pain and suffering.
I mean we’ve been to soccer games or hockey games with our kids and its like 20-0 and we’re like ..”you can do it” “Don’t give up, you still have a chance”
No they don’t.
You’ve seen football games where cheerleaders are cheering for a team thats down 49-7 in the 4th, cheering and jumping, and you’re like…pack it up.
And you start to see it in their eyes, this kind of intense smile, but their eyes are dead!
In light of the cross. In light of the fact that Mary said, “I’m in” and traded in her future for the perfect will of God and that her promised son was in fact the Son of the Most High, who took on human flesh, grew to be a man, who would take on himself the punishment that you and I have done well to prove daily that justly belonged to us,
because of all that we are not called to a kind of token, weak, throw out a fitting verse, spirit sprinkled optimism.
I’m talking about a deep rooted optimism that sees beyond today. Beyond our personal brokenness and beyond the brokenness of Creation to a God who steps in.
Steps into small peasant villages, and broken lives yearning to be seen and heard and healed.
And says, I am a loving King, I am the first and the last, the alpha and the omega, and I am calling you to myself, inviting you into MY story.
What will our response be?
Prayer
Benediction
[1] I waited patiently for the LORD;
he inclined to me and heard my cry.
[2] He drew me up from the pit of destruction,
out of the miry bog,
and set my feet upon a rock,
making my steps secure.
[3] He put a new song in my mouth,
a song of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear,
and put their trust in the LORD.
[4] Blessed is the man who makes
the LORD his trust,
