Prologue of the Gospel
,

I. The Subject of the Prologue: “The Word.”

II. The Essential Nature of the Word.

A. He is an eternal being.

1. The beginning carries us back to the initial point of time. “In the beginning was the Word …”

2. The Word existed in the beginning.

B. He is a distinct Person from God, yet one with Him. “And the Word was with God …”

C. He is God. “And the Word was God.”

D. The doctrine of the Trinity is a deep mystery, but it is fundamental in Christianity. Therefore, the apostle reiterates the eternity, the personality, the oneness of the Word with God. “The same was in the beginning with God.”

Edwards, A. L., Sr. (1978). Outlines on the Gospel of John and First John (p. 6). Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Book House.
