Sermon Scripture
Sermon Scripture
16 The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.
In speaking of glorification, we recognize that we live in a present reality of a passed work and a future revelation.
If we speak of glorification, then we realize that we are speaking of a specific word not found in scripture, although that does not mean that the concept is not there or that the word is not correct in describing something that is in scripture.
The idea that is spoken of in the word “glorification” is found conveyed by the greek verb “doxazo” (glorify) and/or, the noun “doxa” (glory).
While the Old Testament first brings this concept to our attention:
24 With Your counsel You will guide me,
And afterward receive me to glory.
3 Those who have insight will shine brightly like the brightness of the expanse of heaven, and those who lead the many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever.
It is the New Testament that develops this revelation more fully while highlighting it as something specific to believers.
In the study of soteriology “glorification” is often referred to as the final step in the application of “redemption”.
However, in referring to it this way, we must make a few things clear:
It is a work and reality already accomplished for believers by Jesus Christ.
It is a reality/truth though fully obtained yet to be fully realized.
It is eternal - it has been (pre-ordained by God), is (present truth) and shall be (not to be lost).
17 and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.
“if indeed” is not conditional in the since of a present day suffering. It is rather affirming in its condition. Meaning “if -and indeed you have” or “since indeed” or “seeing” that we suffer with Him (speaking of what took place with believers in the death of Christ, we are also “glorified with Him”.
This has all been done in and through the work of Christ. It took place for each and every believer when it took place for Christ.
30 and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified.
So you see, it is correct to say that a believer in or through the work of Christ is or has been glorified. It is a part of the grace gift of salvation, the wonder and blessing of redemption.
Now, if we are to say that, then we must recognize what that means or involves for the believer:
Moral Perfection - not based on our work, but realized in the work of Christ - we are sanctified, set apart, made holy…perfected.
13 But we should always give thanks to God for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God has chosen you from the beginning for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and faith in the truth. 14 It was for this He called you through our gospel, that you may gain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
10 For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things, and through whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to perfect the author of their salvation through sufferings. 11 For both He who sanctifies and those who are sanctified are all from one Father; for which reason He is not ashamed to call them brethren,
2. Blameless - as we have been set apart and made perfect, we also are made blameless (nothing to be brought against us)
27 that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless.
We have been made perfect and blameless spiritually speaking. I am not saying that we do not sin. I am speaking of the new man, not the fleshly carcus of the old man that you still carry around.
However, in speaking of the new man, we must note that their is bodily participation in the spirits teaching of us be glorified in Christ.
23 And not only this, but also we ourselves, having the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our body.
43 it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power;
21 who will transform the body of our humble state into conformity with the body of His glory, by the exertion of the power that He has even to subject all things to Himself.
Php
Understanding this is how we rest in the fullness of our deliverance and liberation
21 that the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God.
It is how we walk presently persevering, anticipating that new and eternal immortal covering and life (), knowing that what is put on, what is defined in the fullness of glory is, imperishable, powerful and spiritual ()
43 it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; 44 it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.
3. Participation - to be glorified is not in word alone, but also in action. It is not only descriptive of who we are in Christ but also how we are in Christ.
We in being glorified are made as so to be participants of the Kingdom of God. This truth being known transforms and controls even the present day walk of the believer.
12 so that you would walk in a manner worthy of the God who calls you into His own kingdom and glory.
Our participation won’t be a distant cheering on, but an intimate reigning with Christ:
10 For this reason I endure all things for the sake of those who are chosen, so that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus and with it eternal glory. 11 It is a trustworthy statement:
For if we died with Him, we will also live with Him;
12 If we endure, we will also reign with Him;
If we deny Him, He also will deny us;
In this sense, in being glorified we are made by God to be partakers even in God’s own glory:
2 through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God.
Romans 5:
12 so that you would walk in a manner worthy of the God who calls you into His own kingdom and glory.
14 It was for this He called you through our gospel, that you may gain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
10 After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you.
Outlasting, more true and more certain than any of your current fleeting circumstance, is you position in Christ the Lord, and beloved…the true, certain and present hope that we have in Christ Jesus is, my friends quite literally a most glorious one. - praise God for that. Amen
7 to those who by perseverance in doing good seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life;
