Bloody Road to Bethlehem

“He Dun Lost his Mind”

Matthew 2:1–20 NASB95
1 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, 2 “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him.” 3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 Gathering together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. 5 They said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea; for this is what has been written by the prophet: 6 And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, Are by no means least among the leaders of Judah; For out of you shall come forth a Ruler Who will shepherd My people Israel.’ ” 7 Then Herod secretly called the magi and determined from them the exact time the star appeared. 8 And he sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the Child; and when you have found Him, report to me, so that I too may come and worship Him.” 9 After hearing the king, they went their way; and the star, which they had seen in the east, went on before them until it came and stood over the place where the Child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11 After coming into the house they saw the Child with Mary His mother; and they fell to the ground and worshiped Him. Then, opening their treasures, they presented to Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 12 And having been warned by God in a dream not to return to Herod, the magi left for their own country by another way. 13 Now when they had gone, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Get up! Take the Child and His mother and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is going to search for the Child to destroy Him.” 14 So Joseph got up and took the Child and His mother while it was still night, and left for Egypt. 15 He remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called My Son.” 16 Then when Herod saw that he had been tricked by the magi, he became very enraged, and sent and slew all the male children who were in Bethlehem and all its vicinity, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the magi. 17 Then what had been spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: 18 “A voice was heard in Ramah, Weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children; And she refused to be comforted, Because they were no more.” 19 But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, and said, 20 “Get up, take the Child and His mother, and go into the land of Israel; for those who sought the Child’s life are dead.”

I.  The Search

Matthew 2:1–8 NASB95
8 And he sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the Child; and when you have found Him, report to me, so that I too may come and worship Him.”
Mt 2:1-8 “Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying,2 “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? -The wise men of the east enter the city square at Jerusalem on a search mission for the Messiah. These men only had a vague understanding of where he was to be born, so they came to the city leaders, and ask the penetrating question. “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews?” This question should have put Jerusalem in a mass pandemonium , because they have been waiting in great anticipation for him…..These wise men were serious they traveled (2,380 miles from Persia or if they were from Babylon 900 miles) just to see him, and to present these gifts to him.
“Where is He who has been born King of the Jews?”
-This question put Jerusalem in a mass pandemonium , because they have been waiting in great anticipation for him. There had been about a 600 year gap of the last time a King actually reign on the throne of the Tribe of Judah. The children of Israel had been under foreign occupation for all of these centuries. They were looking for Military King(Like David) to remove the yoke of physical slavery.
-These wise men were serious they traveled roughly 2400 miles via camel to come and pay homage and worship this little child. These wise men were pagans(Persian) who obviously had been converted to Judaism and were also anticipating the coming of “The Christ”
(v.2) “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews?” Without knowing it they have just disrespected “King Herod” because he was the current sitting King of the Jews, and he already had Son. Notice what the wisemen said… “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews?” Noticed what the “Magi” said where is he “BORN”- This one we are looking for was not installed by Rome, nor voted on by the Israelites “King of the Jews” he was “Born” King of the Jews by right. It was his birthright.
Matthew 2:2 NASB95

Who is this “King Herod?
a. Installed by Rome in 37bc
b. He was biracial is heritage as Jewish & Idumean…He is Half Edomite. The Edomite were enemies of the Jews. They could not stand each other.
Rome installed him because that would alleviate them from having to watch over Israel.  They just installed an enemy of the Jews. Herod was basically a puppet for the Roman government.
c. As Herod got older he became increasingly paranoid over people taking his office, so he even had some of his wives and sons killed to prevent them from taking his Throne.
d. This title he had “King of the Jews” was an artificial title given by Roman government. He was never considered by the Jews the true and rightful King.
e. He converted to Judaism as a political move to appease the Jews.
Matthew 2:3 NASB95
3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.
(v.3) it says that When Herod about the Magi asking about “where the King of the Jews” is he was “troubled” this is a weak translation of the true emotion he felt…. “in turmoil” or “deeply terrified” His terror let’s me know that he knew of the prophecy of this “Anointed One”

(v.3 )“and all Jerusalem with him” This was not the people but all the Chief Priest, scribes that he installed that were all loyal to him.
Matthew 2:4–6 NASB95
4 Gathering together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. 5 They said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea; for this is what has been written by the prophet: 6 And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, Are by no means least among the leaders of Judah; For out of you shall come forth a Ruler Who will shepherd My people Israel.’ ”

(v.4-6) Herod gathers the Religious Scholars together to discuss where the Bible says his birthplace is. This tells us Herod was not a scholar. He was in it for the power.

4 specific prophecies from this text:
a. Born in Bethlehem
b. Of the twelve tribes of Israel he will descend from Judah…this is in fulfilment of the prophecy that he will be of the same tribe of King David (also born in Bethlehem)
c. A Ruler-a prince, or commander
d. He will also be a priest/Pastor of the Jews
Matthew 2:7–8 NASB95

a. Determine the exact time the star appeared
b. Search for the baby
c. Report back to me about the baby whereabouts
Why?
So that I may come and worship him….Bold face lie!!
Transition Statement-The wise men leave excited and anxious to see the king as they traveled to Bethlehem

II. The Escape

Matthew 2:11–13 NASB95
11 After coming into the house they saw the Child with Mary His mother; and they fell to the ground and worshiped Him. Then, opening their treasures, they presented to Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 12 And having been warned by God in a dream not to return to Herod, the magi left for their own country by another way. 13 Now when they had gone, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Get up! Take the Child and His mother and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is going to search for the Child to destroy Him.”
Matthew 2:11–15 NASB95

This was to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called My Son.”
-In v.11 it says after coming in the house….this tells you that Joseph and Mary found a more permanent living situation, which means that Jesus had some age on him by now…probably between 1 to 2 years old by the time the Wise men arrive.

-Sidenote: Notice also that the wise men fell prostrate and bow to worship Jesus not Mary.
Matthew 2:12 NASB95
12 And having been warned by God in a dream not to return to Herod, the magi left for their own country by another way.
(v.12) “God Speaks” up until this point the wise men could not have known the true intention of “King Herod” so they were probably going to get up after sleeping and return to Jerusalem and tell King Herod were they found the “King of the Jews” so he too could come and worship.

-The Magi were obedient and left another way….This would have required faith on their part, because it was only 5 miles between them and Jerusalem and if Herod got word that they slip out on him, then they would be Dead….but they obeyed God!
Matthew 2:13–14 NASB95
13 Now when they had gone, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Get up! Take the Child and His mother and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is going to search for the Child to destroy Him.” 14 So Joseph got up and took the Child and His mother while it was still night, and left for Egypt.
(v.13-14) an Angelic messenger began to trouble Joseph dreams, and told him to “Get Up!” Take your family to Egypt, and don’t come back her until I tell you. This trip would have been about 300 miles by foot. This request would have been a faith walk for Joseph, and especially Mary, because she just got a house to raise her son in, and his Father now says we got to “Go” let’s remember Joseph had the dream not Mary. Mary would have had to trust her Husband.

(v.14) Joseph wasted no time, and he got his wife and son up out of there. This is the type of obedience that pleases God.
Transition Statement-Our Lord always keeps his people one step ahead of the enemy, but he does not always remove the pain. With God there is sometimes collateral damage.

III. The Cry

Matthew 2:16–18 NASB95
16 Then when Herod saw that he had been tricked by the magi, he became very enraged, and sent and slew all the male children who were in Bethlehem and all its vicinity, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the magi. 17 Then what had been spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: 18 “A voice was heard in Ramah, Weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children; And she refused to be comforted, Because they were no more.”
Mt 2:16-18 “Then when Herod saw that he had been tricked by the magi, he became very enraged, and sent and slew all the male children who were in Bethlehem and all its vicinity, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the magi.17 Then what had been spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled:  “A voice was heard in Ramah,Weeping and great mourning,Rachel weeping for her children; And she refused to be comforted,Because they were no more.”
-When Herod figured out that the Magi gave him the slip, He became “Enraged” this word is Thumos in Greek….it means boiling over…probable where we got our word thermometer.

-When Herod figured out that the Magi gave him the slip, He became “Enraged” this word is Thumos in Greek….it means boiling over…probable where we got our word thermometer.
(v.16) This anger sent King Herod into a controlled Frenzy and he acts; he is no longer trying to conceal his intent, he makes it plain….So he sent the palace soldiers into this little insignificant small town and killed every male child two and under. We all might say King Herod “you dun lost your mind”…..It wasn’t just the genocide, but it was who he was trying to kill…..he was trying to kill “the King of Glory” Herod became so angry that he was going to kill “the Anointed One” you got to be some kind of crazy to think that you can kill “God in Human Flesh”
“Imagine the screams that night, Babies quietly sleeping, mothers rocking sick little babies, then soldiers coming in unannounced and cutting babies in two pieces then leaving them on the front porch with a mother holding on to her child’s head which has been separated from his body” This is certainly not the cheerful Santa Claus and cookies story for these families. These families had committed no sins, but their children were killed to satisfy the blood thirstiness of a paranoid leader.
-This is not the American version of the Christmas story
Explain a Paradox. Cross follow by the crown, Pleasure often coming after Pain. You have heard it before “no pain, no gain” the principles is that often our greatest moments have come in the midst of our greatest affliction. The paradox is “how does pain produce hope” Just ask a Mother who has just gone through labor.
-Oh Lord, you preserved Jesus, you preserved Moses, you preserved Seth, but what about Abel, but what about the innocent first born male children in Egypt, and what about the innocent male children of Bethlehem. -This story teaches the Paradoxical truths about God, sometimes God protects/preserves from Evil, and sometimes God lets some Evil through the cracks that effect Godly people.  The only promise we have in the end is that, all things Work together for Good.

-There were many mothers that night weeping and mourning over their children in Bethlehem….. “A voice was heard in Ramah, Weeping and great mourning. Sometimes we love the ending of a story so much that we don’t examine the intricate details of the whole narrative.
Transition Statement-In the midst of all these dead children the Lord spoke.

IV. The Return

matthew 2:
Matthew 2:19–20 NASB95
19 But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, and said, 20 “Get up, take the Child and His mother, and go into the land of Israel; for those who sought the Child’s life are dead.”
-In v.19 it says “But when Herod died” History tells us that Herod died in 4 b.c. which is not long after Joseph and his Family left for Egypt.  So not long after Herod decided to kill all those young infants he fell ill. Josephus a Jewish historian reports that Herod died from an excruciating disease….He had Kidney Failure, and Fournier Gangrene (Gangrene of the genitals)….so it looks like that within the same year or the next year after Jesus left for Egypt Herod got sick….

-Just to show you how insane Herod was before he died he killed high ranking members of the Jewish aristocracy so that the people would mourn for them during the time he was dying so that people would assume that people were mourning him….. “Herod dun lost his Mind”
(v.19) The “Angel of the Lord” spoke to Joseph again in a dream and told him to take his Family back to the Land of Israel….This led Joseph to Nazareth instead of Bethlehem to raise his young family.
-In these last several texts it really becomes clear that God is in totally control of this situation, despite the underlying attempts to destroy the life of our Savior
Application
Sub-plot application
1.  When we are in Spiritual warfare and we are unaware of the intentions of those around us, we can trust that God will reveal their motives (Herod intentions to kill the Baby Jesus)
2.  When God speaks during times of Spiritual Warfare, we need to obey immediately and decisively, because lives are at stake (The Angel speaks to both the Wise men, and Joseph to Get Up! And Get Out!)
3.  Being in the will of God does not exempt you from bad things happening to you….Abel, the young males in the Nile River, and the young toddlers in Bethlehem…but in all things God is good.
Plot application
4.  Herod knew who the Messiah was and what he would do, and yet he still sought to “kill him” there must have been something else driving him, besides just fear of losing his spot. It was Satan under the surface looking to destroy the Seed before he matures.
Conclusion:
We often start the Christmas Story at the Life of Mary and Joseph but actually it starts in Matthew Chapter 1
Matthew 1:1–17 NASB95
1 The record of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham: 2 Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers. 3 Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, Perez was the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram. 4 Ram was the father of Amminadab, Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon. 5 Salmon was the father of Boaz by Rahab, Boaz was the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse. 6 Jesse was the father of David the king. David was the father of Solomon by Bathsheba who had been the wife of Uriah. 7 Solomon was the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asa. 8 Asa was the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, and Joram the father of Uzziah. 9 Uzziah was the father of Jotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz the father of Hezekiah. 10 Hezekiah was the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of Amon, and Amon the father of Josiah. 11 Josiah became the father of Jeconiah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon. 12 After the deportation to Babylon: Jeconiah became the father of Shealtiel, and Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel. 13 Zerubbabel was the father of Abihud, Abihud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the father of Azor. 14 Azor was the father of Zadok, Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father of Eliud. 15 Eliud was the father of Eleazar, Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the father of Jacob. 16 Jacob was the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, by whom Jesus was born, who is called the Messiah. 17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; from David to the deportation to Babylon, fourteen generations; and from the deportation to Babylon to the Messiah, fourteen generations.
-The Story of the Birth of Christ is about the preservation of a lineage that would bring forth:
-Let John the Baptist tell you who he is:
