Text
Transition: If you haven’t done so already, please turn bibles to ,
Why do the nations rage
and the peoples plot in vain?
The kings of the earth set themselves,
and the rulers take counsel together,
against the Lord and against his Anointed, saying,
“Let us burst their bonds apart
and cast away their cords from us.”
He who sits in the heavens laughs;
the Lord holds them in derision.
Then he will speak to them in his wrath,
and terrify them in his fury, saying,
“As for me, I have set my King
on Zion, my holy hill.”
I will tell of the decree:
The Lord said to me, “You are my Son;
today I have begotten you.
Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage,
and the ends of the earth your possession.
You shall break them with a rod of iron
and dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.”
Now therefore, O kings, be wise;
be warned, O rulers of the earth.
Serve the Lord with fear,
and rejoice with trembling.
Kiss the Son,
lest he be angry, and you perish in the way,
for his wrath is quickly kindled.
Blessed are all who take refuge in him.
Prayer…
What we learn from is four-fold…
Overview:
The Nations are Raging
II. The LORD is Laughing
III. The King is Reigning
IV. Blessed are all who take refuge in King Jesus
The LORD is Laughing
The King is Reigning
Blessed are all who take refuge in Him
I. The Nations are Raging
I. The Nations are Raging
Why do the nations rage
and the peoples plot in vain?
The kings of the earth set themselves,
and the rulers take counsel together,
against the Lord and against his Anointed, saying,
Who is raging? Who is plotting?
Verse 1, The nations & peoples of the earth. All peoples, Verse 2 says, Kings and rulers and all their armies. All mankind raging and plotting together.
This means all mankind.
Who are they raging against?
Verse 2, The LORD & His Anointed (Yahweh & His Messiah)
Yahweh: Israel’s “National God.” (Explain)
Yahweh is not just a National God. He was the God of Adam long before he was the God of Abraham.
He is God who created all the world. He is God alone, in Heaven, there is no other God before him.
He is the creator of the philistines, the Hittites, Jebusites, Wichitans, and any other designation of people groups you can think of, because Yahweh is the creator of all the earth and of all human beings who inhabit the earth.
And so the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain against their creator and the one whom their creator has chosen to be be King over them.
The text calls this chosen king “The Anointed/Messiah” which indeed comes from Israel.
The Messiah is not just an anointed King. But the anointed King. Saul and David were both anointed King by Samuel, but neither of them were the Messiah.
Because the Messiah would be “The last and final king”, who would never die. He shall be king forever.
The Messiah, or in Greek, the Christ would rule forever.
So, “When we say Jesus Christ, we are saying that Jesus is the Christ. That is not just his last name, it is his title. He is the Messiah. He is the last and final king. Who cannot die, lest he be merely a King like Saul and David who both died and decayed in the grave.
So if Jesus died how can he be the King of ? That is the greatest hurdle for every jew in the new testament, how can Jesus be the Christ if he died like David? And We’ll answer that question later.
For now, let’s understand the title Messaiah or Christ. The Christ is not merely Israel’s King. Not just the King over the Jews, but the King which comes from the Jews.
When Yahweh’s Messiah comes, He shall rule over all the world that Yahweh himself created. All that is Yahweh’s will be given to his Christ to rule over.
So, To rebel against the Christ’s authority is to rebel against Yahweh himself. Verse 3 answers our last question.
What is all mankind plotting to do?
“Let us burst their bonds apart
and cast away their cords from us.”
Here we find a Piel Verb Stem: Hebrew will add stems to verbs in order to esxpress the type of action.
Here we have the Piel Stem: So, it is not just “Let us break their bonds”, but “Let us burst /shatter them apart”.
The Piel stem is an intensifier. Kind of like our exclamation mark in english. Their action is a violent and vicious action.
They wish not just to remove themselves from Yahweh and his Christ’s dominion, but to usurp their authority. They believe they can overthrow the Christ’s Kingdom and thus overthrow Yahweh himself.
This has been true since Satan. Verse 3 sounds like something Satan would say. Once an angel in Heaven referred to as Lucifer, wishing to sit upon the throne of God and take Yahweh’s place as ruler of the world, but he was cast down.
All of fallen mankind, who follow Satan do the same and say the same thing as verse 3.
Adam and Eve ate the fruit, believing themselves to be like God able to discern what is good and evil, without submitting to God’s command, they needed to only trust God that they were not yet ready, not yet mature enough to make such distinctions between good and evil.
Their disobedience was a statement saying, “I know better than you God.” Which is to place themselves above him. To burst and shatter the chords of Yahweh’s authority. As if they could rule better than him. This thought was and is today, Satanically influenced.
How many in here are tempted to believe the same lie? I know better than you, God. Many of us have lived much of our lives this way, many of us have lived most of last week this way.
When we struggle with finances, God I know better than you.
When our homes are not as they should be, God I know better than you.
When our sexual desires begin to overwhelm our thoughts, God I know better than you.
When our culture tells us we have the right to cast off his authority on our life, God I know better than you.
All such things are Satanically influenced as was the temptation in the Garden.
Here is , The Kings and Rulers of the earth who set themselves together against Yahweh and against his anointed are wanting to burst and break the authority of God over their lives.
Israel likewise despised the commandments of Yahweh and chased after false god’s. In , the apostle Paul, drawing from Dueteronomy 32, says these false God’s are not gods at all, but demons that set themselves up as gods receiving worship.
Thus all nations who worship false gods and all principalities who receive their worship are under judgment!
Allegiance to a false god and king is Cosmic Treason!
Idol worship is not simply a compilation of “alternative worldviews”, it is treason against the King and rebellion against their creator.
The people who claim, you can decide for yourself what is good and evil
Decide for yourself if you are boy or a girl or something else altogether
Decide for yourself if you will practice christianity, islam, hinduism, Buddhism, or none of the above. Just one of the many options for you to choose from.
As if you were creator and Lord of your own life. Even fast food restaurants want you to believe, that if you are lord over what goes on your burger, somehow you are lord of something special.
Worship to any other god is false worship, either to yourself or to another, and it is a sort of plotting and planning to cast off the claim of Yahweh upon your life.
But, God was the God of Adam before the God of Abraham. All mankind, including you and me, were made to worship and serve Yahweh, our creator, and his king, the Christ. Yet, we all rage against his worship, and plot in vain how we might escape his authority.
The first book of the New Testament quickly shows us that Israel is no better than the rest of us, they had become like the raging nations at the very birth of Yahweh’s King.
When King Jesus, the Christ child, was born, the plotting against him began! Immediately showing us that Jesus is the Messaiah of .
At his birth came magi from the east coming to bow down to him, Matthew tells us in chapter 2 of his Gospel.
As I’m sure you remember, the Magi told Herod they knew the Jewish King had been born. The christ child. The one who would be the king of the world.
They knew he would not just be king over jerusalem, for that is why they had come.
The were not Jewish, but they studied Jewish literature. The knew .
They knew an eternal King of the world would be born a Jew and that his kingdom would be everlasting.
So they had traveled from after, to bow down to Yahweh’s anointed messiah, to come and bow down to the king of the world!
But what did Herod, the current king of the jews, do? Herod issued his army to destroy the baby!
He plotted against the Christ, let us kill every child 0-2yrs, according to the time the Magi told him they saw his star.
He was raging mad, and sent his jewish army, and at that moment Israel not only immediately rejected their Messiah, at his birth, before Jesus even learned to walk, they tried to Kill him!
Israel had become as wicked as ancient Egypt, perhaps more so, since Jesus finds refuge with his parents in Egypt, and hostility amongst the Hebrews. Jesus likened to Moses, and Herod likened to the wicked Pharoah.
The current King, Herod, trying to kill the anointed king, Jesus, much like King Saul trying to murder King David.
Jesus began overthrowing every Earthly and Heavenly authority
He spoke and taught not as any scribe or pharisee, but as one who had the authority of God himself
He cast out demons and they feared him. No principality receive worship from the nations would stand.
The King had arrived and the nations were his! All he would have to do is ask Yahweh.
Transition: Any attempt to overthrow Yahweh and his anointed should be met with laughter. We should laugh and mock those who would desire God’s thrown, laugh and mock Herod, Mr. Big strong King and His big bad army cannot kill even one small little baby boy, we laugh at such vain attempts, because God himself laughs and holds them in derision. The nations are raging, the kings and rulers are plotting… against Yahweh and His Christ… but

II. The LORD is Laughing
He who sits in the heavens laughs;
the Lord holds them in derision.

The kings of the earth plot in vain, for the one enthroned in heaven laughs at them
The word for derision means to mock or ridicule. Some translations use the word, “scoffs”
Which will sound familiar from , “do not sit in the seat of a scoffer”, because a scoffer thinks himself to be God.
However, those who study God’s word and God’s actions will mature. And they will learn how to discern good and evil, they will mature and come to learn what are the appropriate things to scoff at.
It is not that we must never mock and ridicule someone, but only that we laugh at those whom God laughs at. For we are not God, but we must image him.
And God laughs at any person, ideology, or movement which tries to cast aside God’s authority… or in our day, redefine what God has defined. Or destroy what God is building.
As Jesus says,
This is a foolish thing for mankind to even think they can do. To believe they can gather together and set themselves against the LORD and against His anointed.
The one who created the world by his word says he will merely speak and they will be terrified at the very sound of his voice.
And that no matter how much they rage against him, they will never overthrow His King. For His King would be His Son.
Psalm 2:5
Like you building your own house and the house saying it will live in you.
Transition: This Advent season we join Old Testament Israel in their longings. Longing for the coming Messiah, the Christ child who would save them from their sins and be born King of the world, whose kingdom would have no end. This Christmas we will celebrate that The LORD has sent to us his Son, Jesus!

Which is who we will learn about next. teaches us that Yahweh’s king will be called his Son.

III. The King is Reigning
III. The King is Reigning
“As for me, I have set my King
on Zion, my holy hill.”
I will tell of the decree:
The Lord said to me, “You are my Son;
today I have begotten you.
Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage,
and the ends of the earth your possession.
You shall break them with a rod of iron
and dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.”
“As for me, I have set my King

I will tell of the decree:
The Lord said to me, “You are my Son;
today I have begotten you.
says that Yahweh’s King will be called his Son
The Gospel writers all make sure we don’t miss that Jesus was repeatedly called the Son of God. A title not only used by his disciples, but by God the Father himself.
and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
And incase we missed it, again we are told at his transfiguration
He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.”
Jesus is God’s Son, but how is Jesus the Christ? How do we see him fufilling the role of the Messiah in ?
If the plotting of Herod against the Christ child was not enough in chapter 2, Matthew shows us again in chapter 27, that all the nations and rulers and authorities, both Jew and Gentile, plotted against him.
When Jesus had finished all these sayings, he said to his disciples, “You know that after two days the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified.”
Then the chief priests and the elders of the people gathered in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas,
When morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death. And they bound him and led him away and delivered him over to Pilate the governor.
When morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death.
The Romans, that is, the nations, all mankind gathered together with Israel leading the charge.
Pilate said to them, “Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said, “Let him be crucified!”
“Crucify Him, Crucify Him”
“We have no king but Caesar”
The kings of the earth set themselves,
and the rulers take counsel together,
against the Lord and against his Anointed, saying,
“Let us burst their bonds apart
and cast away their cords from us.”
Why do the nations rage
and the peoples plot in vain?
The kings of the earth set themselves,
and the rulers take counsel together,
against the Lord and against his Anointed, saying,
“Let us burst their bonds apart
and cast away their cords from us.”
Crucify Him, Crucify Him”
“We have no king but Caesar”
So also the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocked him, saying, “He saved others; he cannot save himself. He is the King of Israel; let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. He trusts in God; let God deliver him now, if he desires him. For he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’ ” And the robbers who were crucified with him also reviled him in the same way.
If God desires him… that is if Jesus is Yahweh’s anointed king of , let Yahweh save him, and we will all bow down and serve him as tells us to do.
But, Soon after they said this, he died.
Ah ha, see Jesus was not the Christ, would say the Jews.
He was not the Messiah. He died like all other kings, including David before him.
Jesus is not the Christ of , so they scoffed at him and mocked him!
Thinking that he was one to be scoffed at, if Jesus wanted the thrown of God, calling himself the Christ, but was not the Christ, then he deserved to be mocked.
Paul address this false scoffing of the Jews in his sermon to them found in where he quotes as proof that Jesus is the Christ, because Yahweh did desire him.
He did save him, by raising him from the dead!
and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord,
“Brothers, sons of the family of Abraham, and those among you who fear God, to us has been sent the message of this salvation. For those who live in Jerusalem and their rulers, because they did not recognize him nor understand the utterances of the prophets, which are read every Sabbath, fulfilled them by condemning him. And though they found in him no guilt worthy of death, they asked Pilate to have him executed. And when they had carried out all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree and laid him in a tomb. But God raised him from the dead, and for many days he appeared to those who had come up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are now his witnesses to the people. And we bring you the good news that what God promised to the fathers, this he has fulfilled to us their children by raising Jesus, as also it is written in the second Psalm,
“ ‘You are my Son,
today I have begotten you.’
And as for the fact that he raised him from the dead, no more to return to corruption, he has spoken in this way,
“ ‘I will give you the holy and sure blessings of David.’
Therefore he says also in another psalm,
“ ‘You will not let your Holy One see corruption.’
For David, after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, fell asleep and was laid with his fathers and saw corruption, but he whom God raised up did not see corruption. Let it be known to you therefore, brothers, that through this man forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, and by him everyone who believes is freed from everything from which you could not be freed by the law of Moses. Beware, therefore, lest what is said in the Prophets should come about:
“ ‘Look, you scoffers,
be astounded and perish;
for I am doing a work in your days,
a work that you will not believe, even if one tells it to you.’ ”
Yes Jesus died on the cross, but that was for our salvation, says Paul, for the forgiveness of our sins, which was foretold by the prophets that the Christ must die first and then be raised to glory as King! Paul says, just read the Psalms and you would know that the Christ would die, be buried, be resurrected, and rule as King & Christ forever !!!
Again is quoted
Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.
For to which of the angels did God ever say,
“You are my Son,
today I have begotten you”?
Or again,
“I will be to him a father,
and he shall be to me a son”?
Hebrews 2:
Transition: Jesus is the Christ, Yahweh’s anointed from ! All Jesus must do is Ask Yahweh and he will give him all that he created.
Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage,
and the ends of the earth your possession.
You shall break them with a rod of iron
and dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.”
Upon his resurrection from the dead Jesus does just that!
And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church,
putting everything in subjection under his feet.”
Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control. At present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him.
Jesus says, Yahweh has given me all Authority! I have asked him, and he has given it, as he said he would in .
1Cor.
For it was not to angels that God subjected the world to come, of which we are speaking. It has been testified somewhere,
“What is man, that you are mindful of him,
or the son of man, that you care for him?
You made him for a little while lower than the angels;
you have crowned him with glory and honor,
putting everything in subjection under his feet.”
Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control. At present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him.
Hebrews
Transition: So, though he is rightful King over all, All the nations and all the earth belongs to Jesus! Yet many are still raging against him! Yes even today.
Many are still not submitting and bowing the knee to him. Which brings us to our final point. The nations are raging, the LORD is laughing, because his King is reigning and…
IV. Blessed are all who take refuge in Him
IV. Blessed are all who take refuge in Him
There is a final warning and promise in as it relates to all mankind rebelling against the LORD and his Christ.
Look with me in verses 10-12
Now therefore, O kings, be wise;
be warned, O rulers of the earth.
Serve the Lord with fear,
and rejoice with trembling.
Kiss the Son,
lest he be angry, and you perish in the way,
for his wrath is quickly kindled.
Blessed are all who take refuge in him.
“Kiss the Son”, submit to his authority, and serve him with fear and rejoicing with trembling.
How could we do both? Submit to his authority and serve him with fear and yet rejoice?
Because the hands of our king were pierced for our transgressions
We kiss a King’s hands which have been pierced for our salvation
We deserved to be mocked by God for trying to take his thrown
Yet Jesus was mocked in our place, though he deserved to be enthroned in glory
We deserve to be put to open shame for our rebellion
Yet he bore our shame with a crown of throns
How can we rejoice?
We do not serve a dead humiliated man, but a risen & triumphant King, who gave his life to save ours!
Before we end I would like for us to consider two things:
First, that the early church quoted as apart of their mission to the nations!
Second, that all gathered here need to either heed the warning of and Kiss the Son, or else perish in the way.
First, the early church believed to be apart of the gospel message and their mission to the nations!
When the church was persecuted in , they quoted and sang after john and Peter were released from Jail!!!
When they were released, they went to their friends and reported what the chief priests and the elders had said to them. And when they heard it, they lifted their voices together to God and said, “Sovereign Lord, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them, who through the mouth of our father David, your servant, said by the Holy Spirit,
“ ‘Why did the Gentiles rage,
and the peoples plot in vain?
The kings of the earth set themselves,
and the rulers were gathered together,
against the Lord and against his Anointed’—
for truly in this city there were gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel, to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place. And now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness, while you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness.
The early church sang in the midst of persecution, and they were filled with boldness to continue to preach the gospel! So too we should sing for boldness for Exodus Church to boldly preach the gospel until all of Wichita “Kisses the Son” in joyful submission to the the Lordship of Jesus, Yahweh’s anointed, the Christ!
We shall preach the gospel as Peter first did!
In the conclusion of his sermon in is much like what we have studied here in
“Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne, he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing. For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says,
“ ‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at my right hand,
until I make your enemies your footstool.” ’
Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.”
“Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know— this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it. For David says concerning him,
“ ‘I saw the Lord always before me,
for he is at my right hand that I may not be shaken;
therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced;
my flesh also will dwell in hope.
For you will not abandon my soul to Hades,
or let your Holy One see corruption.
You have made known to me the paths of life;
you will make me full of gladness with your presence.’

Peter tells everyone gathered that day of Pentecost, “You all rejected Yahweh & Yahweh’s Anointed! You killed him, and God raised him back to life again! AKA, KISS THE SON, LEST YOU PERISH!!!!”
And what did they do?
Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.” And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.” So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.
Lastly, let us hear the gospel as it is preached to us this morning from …
Jesus has come, he has died, he has been raised, he has ascended to the right hand of God, and there is no mistaken that Jesus is rightful king of this world. But, what will you do as you stand before his throne this morning?
Will you bow down?
Will you kiss the nail-pierced hands of the Son?
Will you receive forgiveness for your sin and rebellion?
Will you Repent and be baptized?
Will you continually repent of your sin and live in accordance to your baptism?
For He is coming again. At which time, says, all nations will gather together and rage against him, Satan leading the charge as he has always done, but with a sword from the King’s mouth Every knee will bow, and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the father!
We preach this gospel with joy!
We preach this gospel as we wait for his return!
We preach as those who have willingly bended the knee
And we are a church, like the early church, that will continue to do so boldly, until all things are in proper subjection to King Jesus.
And we shall laugh with God, at anyone and anything that might stand in our way. For He builds his church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against us.
For Blessed, Happy, “maybe even Merry” are all those this Christmas, who have taken refuge in Him!
Let us Pray…
