Matthew 2:1–12 ESV
1 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, 2 saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” 3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; 4 and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. 5 They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet: 6 “ ‘And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’ ” 7 Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared. 8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.” 9 After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11 And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. 12 And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.
Matthew 2:1
What is this star? It was the Shekinah glory of God
Verse 6 Ruler who will shepherd my People Israel
The Shepherd- No ordinary shepherds, and they wee raising no ordinary sheep. These sheep would be the Sheep brought to the temple for temple sacrifice
The Magi- Who were they? They were the King Makers of the day.
In fact that is the whole point of the book of M<atthew. Each one of the Gospel writers write from their own unique perspective and each gospel highlights a different element of the person of Jesus Christ. And Matthew writing to the Hebrews, His point is that Jesus is King. And that is why Matthew starts out with a family lineage.
Matthew 1:1 ESV
1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
The book of genealogy of Jesus Christ, The Son of David, the Son of Abraham
David is a very important person in scriptures, because he was one of the first kings of Israel, and t was too him (David) that one of his descedents would be the promised saviour, a King whose Kingdom would endure forever.
And the Kingly line would run through His son Solomon.... But something happens in this family loine. A King comes down the line that gets disqualified and His line is curse.... Well thats a Problem because the Kingly line must come through Solomon. Josiah… was the last one that sat on a throne. The rest did not.
Then you get to looks Gospel and he also gives a family lineage, but its different than Matthews. And you think ha I knew it contradiction in the word of God. Well accept He traces it back to David but its not through Solomon, who the kings came through… He traces it through another one of Davids sons
Another interesting fact, si that the Lord Jesus has the only lasting official document of lineage to king David. Why because the family lineages were held in the Temple in jerusalem and as Jesus predicted the temple was burned to the ground by the Romans in 70 AD. Oh the wisdom and knowledge of God!
And here you have these magi, these King makers coming and bowing before the King
Matthew 2:1–2 ESV
1 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, 2 saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”
These King are from the East and they saw His star? Where did the Persian King makers learn these things? Well In 586 Bc the Jews were ripped from their land and transplanted in Babylon. And God made a Hebrew a young man named Daniel, as chief magi over all the sie men, the magicians the charpmers the soothsayers, over all of them in Babylon because of His ability to interpret dreams
Wise men still seek Him today....
Paul said for me to live is Christ....
Let me ask you a question how would you finish that sentence? For Paul ist was Christ. What is it for you… Some would say for me to live is cash.... Some would say for me to live is comfort… But can I tell you something true riches are found in jesus, True comfort is found in Jesus
Matthew
Matthew 11 ESV
1 When Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and preach in their cities. 2 Now when John heard in prison about the deeds of the Christ, he sent word by his disciples 3 and said to him, “Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?” 4 And Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: 5 the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them. 6 And blessed is the one who is not offended by me.” 7 As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? 8 What then did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those who wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses. 9 What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 10 This is he of whom it is written, “ ‘Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.’ 11 Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has arisen no one greater than John the Baptist. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, and the violent take it by force. 13 For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John, 14 and if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah who is to come. 15 He who has ears to hear, let him hear. 16 “But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to their playmates, 17 “ ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.’ 18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds.” 20 Then he began to denounce the cities where most of his mighty works had been done, because they did not repent. 21 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22 But I tell you, it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you. 23 And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You will be brought down to Hades. For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. 24 But I tell you that it will be more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom than for you.” 25 At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; 26 yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. 27 All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. 28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
Matthew 2:11 ESV
11 And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.
The Three Gifts
Gold: He is to Be King
Matthew 2:2 ESV
2 saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”
The Magi had come to worship him. They said we have coe to woship Gold was the most precious metal on the face of the planet . Crown were made up of Gold. When you come to visit the King in those days gold was the most precious commodity. Throughout all of scripture it was prophecied that there was one coming to rule and to reign.
Isaiah 9:6 ESV
6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9
Gold was the most precious metal on the face of the planet . Crown were made up of Gold.
in when Daniel prophesiahs about the Messiah, He calls Jesus Messiah the Prince. The first time He came Humble, the next time he will come High and Lifted up. The first time He came as Servent, the next time he will come as Sovereign. Do you Know Him?
2. Frankincense- This speaks of His Divine Nature
Matthew 2:11 ESV
11 And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.
2.
What is Frankincense… Well look at the last half of that word… we all know what incese is? thoe things that people burn in their homes to release an aroma throughout their home.
Frankincense is one of the ingredients in a sweet perfume that was used in the tabernacle and the temple for one purpose: the worship of God. As a matter of fact, God said in Exodus chapter 30 that it was not to be used for any other purpose. It is sacred, to be used for Almighty God. ()
Now, not only did they worship Him, therefore, as King, but they worshipped Him as God. As a matter of fact, the Bible says they came and worshipped Him. Look in chapter 2, verse 11: “When they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him.” ()
NOw in scripture it was a serious sin to worship any man or angel.
But yet these magi… these wise men… these King makeers fell down and they worshipoed him as King. You know what? Wise men still worship him today. What are you worshipping this morning?
Luke 2:8
Luke 2:8–17 ESV
8 And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. 10 And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, 14 “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” 15 When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16 And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. 17 And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child.
Bethlehem- Means house of Bread
Verse 6 Ruler who will shepherd my People Israel
The Shepherd- No ordinary shepherds, and they wee raising no ordinary sheep. These sheep would be the Sheep brought to the temple for temple sacrifice
