While Mary's song was personal, relating what God had done for her, in this next song of Zechariah's, he expands our vision, showing us that God has worked not just for individuals, but for the entire universe. The Jews had long been awaiting their Messiah, and in this song, Jesus is called by that name, and God is to be praised for coming to his people, and rescuring them. But it is not just the Jews that benefit from God's redemptive work; this redemption is for all who have been living in darkness, in the shadow of death. Through the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ, all have been offered the love and mercy of God.
