Week 4: The Gift of Family
The Gospel of Matthew begins with a family tree from Abraham to Jesus. Between the recitation of names, we also hear the story of God at work in our world from generation to generation. The Advent and Christmas seasons highlight the significance of family and friends in our lives. We witness Mary and Joseph, Elizabeth and Zechariah, and the shepherds together tending their flocks. As God’s children, we become part of the family tree.

Song
For each perfect gift of thine,
peace on earth and joy in heav’n;
for thyself, best gift divine,
to our world so freely giv’n:
Praise we sing to Christ the Lord,
Virgin’s son, incarnate Word!
To the holy Trinity
praise we sing eternally!
Tune: nun komm, der heidenheiland (ELW 879, st. 5; ELW 263, st. 6)

Family not blood...
Facebook comments...”What does “family” mean to you?”
Facebook comments...”What does “family” mean to you?”
Strength and support and love
The ones who love you and take you in...no matter what
Unconditional Love, support, forgiveness, acceptance and lots of food
Ones who accept and love you for who you are....no sugar coating necessary
Unconditional love
AVVIC (love through life in Christ) - from our phi beta chi years
Family is thinking your parents are dorks and then growing up and realizing you're turning into them (and it's not actually a bad thing)
Family doesn’t have to be blood relatives...my best friend was adopted and I married a Marine and became part of a military family for over 20 years....sometimes you would rather spend time with family that you or God picks for you than your real family
Acceptance but sometimes contentious. Freedom to love and the necessity to forgive.
Stability. Doesn't matter if it's blood related or not. Family is stability
Compassion and comment
Connectedness. We are all connected through various relations. Bonded.
Family is my all! They are always there and love and support you always! They are my Sunshine, joy and laughter. Family is what keeps me going and don't have to be blood! Family is love!
Family is not based on blood. My entire family is not blood related to me yet they have accepted me, for me. And I would defend them to my dying breath. Also their have been and still are people in my life that I consider my family outside of the ones on paper as family.
Family is God given by blood and by choice.
A place where we can be ourselves, loved, forgiven, encouraged, and told the truth.
Forever friends by your side
Someone to confide in, cry with, laugh with, share the good as well as bad. Someone to be able to just sit quietly with, enjoying the silence as well as the noisy time.
Tammy Anderson All of the above & a soft place to fall
Larry Wohlrabe That little platoon of those closest to us, who know all our frailties and failings and still manage to love us unconditionally.
Laurie Studebaker Someone who always has my back, whether I deserve it or not.
Dennis Blythe Commitment and obligation
Mary Aalgaard They always have to take you in
Mary Aalgaard Come in many shapes and sizes, no "one size fits all."
Melanie Lloyd Peck Commonality, the central part of our lives that we share. Roots that go way back. Knowing family always has your back. Missing them when you are not around them. Picking up where you left off, even if it’s months or years since you’ve been together. I could go on......
Sarah Spears Moeschlin Family... there is a invisible thread that runs through each of you. Whether you get along or not you are connected. You share a past, a presence, and you hope a future There is no one else that knows or remembers those experiences. Being family means stepping up when a sibling or parent needs help in their time of need. Parents cared for us when we were young and we find ourselves doing the same as roles switch. Family means dropping everything and caring for your sick and dying sister.
Family is there to celebrate together and to mourn together.
Family and love continues beyond death.

Tribes … blood or no … they are part of us...
To say: God is our father, means the gift of family … is expanded to include the whole human race - even the whole cosmos (all of what God has created)

Liars deny that Jesus is the Messiah (2:22).
anti-Christ denies the Father and the Son (2:23).
Deceivers (2:26) or others claim we have no sin (1:8).

past - lies the origin of the community—its adoption as children by God’s love (v. 1a)
present that community stands over against a hostile “world” (vv. 1b–2a)
future lies its maturation as the family of God (vv. 2b–3)

Those who had the slightest hint of foreign blood - lost the right to be called a Jew; membership as people of God

- children of a priest disbarred & labeled as polluted because they didn’t have the pedigree
