Introduction:
Quote:
Notice the rhetorical question that the LORD asks in verse 3, “And where will ye leave your glory?”
The word glory means: a great physical weight or quantity of a thing, wealth, and significant and positive reputation.
The point is that the actions of these people were for their own increase, and now the Lord is going to bring judgment upon them and show how futile it is to have this “glory”.
uses the same word to identify the weight of the King of Assyria as he comes to destroy Israel.
uses this word with regards to the true LORD:
The truth is that this is the real battle.
Either we will be people who are dedicated and committed to our increase and our glory, or we will be people are recognize and are committed to the weight and majesty and glory of the LORD.
Proposition:
The people of the Lord should be ruled/motivated towards just/righteous treatment of one another (really at the base of this is a lack of trust in the Lord).
Two Revelations about People who are ruled by their own glory:
People who are deeply ruled by the their own glory (v. 1 - 2)
(1) The point highlights unjust, sinful actions (v. 1)
(a) that decree [cut, decree, inscribe]
(b) that write [grievousness - trouble, harm]
(2) The point highlights the motive for these unjust, sinful activities (v.
2a)
(a) to turn aside the needy [judgment - legal claim]
(b) to take away the right from the poor
Illustration:
The first time I was able to use the magnifying lens of a jeweler, I was able to see small dark spots on the diamonds that were not very pure.
To the human eye, they were invisible; but not under this scope.
Similarly, the Lord allows us, through his word, to look more deeply at the motives of these individuals.
(3) The point highlights a deeper motive for these unjust, sinful activities (2b)
(a) Prey on the widows
(b) Rob the fatherless - See
Point: The deeper motive implied in this passage is that of greed or covetousness.
It is so consuming that it knows no boundaries.
Illustration:
There are various kinds of snakes, and not too long ago a Rattler was found swimming in ocean water to a beach.
This is unusual.
Growing up in the south, we had water moccasins.
Much like the variety of poisonous snakes, greed can manifest itself is a variety of ways.
Sometimes the greed is for position: See
Many times greed is identified as the desire to have more.
This sin is often called covetousness.
See
Whatever the case may be, it is lust that consumes and controls the one in whom it resides.
The sin of greed consumes and controls us.
This consuming desire guides our actions, and reveals - we are pursuing our own glory rather than the glory of the LORD.
People who are destroyed because they are ruled by their own glory (v. 3 - 4)
(1) It's a desolation that will reveal their own helplessness (v. 3 - 4a)
(a) Day of vengeance [visitation] is coming
(b) Spoils received unjustly will be useless to you
Illustration:
There was a video of robbers who came into a bank, held up the bank.
One of the robbers is caught on a video camera as he exits the bank.
A few short minutes later, he is seen in a dust cloud as a planted dye pack explodes in the bag of money - rendering the money useless.
In like fashion, their spoils are useless.
(2) It's a desolation that will not satisfy the Lord (v.
4b)
(a) The LORD'S anger still exists
(b) The LORD is ready to strike again
It is the day of vengeance that the LORD brings to make this right.
When we think of the destruction of greed today, we need to see it in two particular ways:
(a) First, there is the eternal desolation.
Consider the rich, young ruler here.
(b) Second, there is the hurtful and foolish lusts to those who are children of God.
Point: People who are ruled by their own glory, reap the results of this pursuit.
Punishment that results in a passion for the Lord’s glory
Consider what happened historically after this and where this led to...
Post judgment, there was a return to the land, a rebuilding of the temple…etc
This too did not last long, as the people tended back towards a passion for their own glory.
Even the remnant became lax and God raised up Haggai and Zechariah to preach to get them back on track.
Each time God’s people lapsed back into this pursuit of their own glory, and each time the LORD’S vengeance would come.
This is really the plight of all mankind.
We are glory thieves at heart.
We need someone to come into our world, crush sin, and give us a hope for overcoming this sin.
Illustration:
Whitney Austin was on her phone, listening to a conference call, when the first bullet hit her.
Austin, a vice president with Fifth Third Bank, was in Cincinnati for the day and was walking through a turnstile when a gunman opened fire at the financial institution's headquarters.
Illustration:
She was hit 12 times, her family said.
Police said the gunman, using a 9mm pistol, fired 35 shots.
Two police officers rushed to help Austin, 37, and carried her to safety Thursday.
"I'm so thankful to the paramedics and first responders and the doctors, nurses and staff at (University of Cincinnati) Medical," Austin said in a statement released through her family.
This is what we need.
We need someone to come and rescue us from something even more deep and more sinister.
We need someone to save us from ourselves, to save us from our sin.
It is this matter of the Lord’s vengeance that leads us to the LORD’S ultimate act of vengeance for those who are ruled by their own glory.
