Joy to the World

Intro: John the Baptist was sent by God to proclaim the coming of Christ. We saw this in our study in Mark.
God use Shepard’s to announce the birth of Christ. Elab on Shepard’s
If we are obedient to God He will use us too.
Why these shepherds? They were watching their flocks that night near where Jesus was born. They were willing to be used. If you are willing, God will use you too.
God didn’t use some religious leaders, some rich well know man in town, He used the Shepherd’s.
Get the picture of them. Sheepfold, (stone fence with thorn bushes on top. Fire going to keep warm, cooking a meal, telling stories. The middle of the night, someone would have on watch duty.
Then everything changed as the sky lite up like a huge fire.

The Shepherd’s were in the same area where Jesus was born.
“abiding in the fields (living in the fields) watching, guarding, protecting the sheep. Night someone had to watch the sheep, they would work in shifts. It was night, maybe a really dark night. Doing what they did every night. But things were about to change.

9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

9 And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened.
It goes from a dark night, Shepherds in a field with sheep, then in an instant, no warning, an angel appears.
a. When the angel shows up, he show up with the glory of the glory of the Lord.
“glory of the Lord” This is something far beyond what we can even comprehend. It speaks of splendour, brightness, magnificence.
b. It was literally a light from another world.
“They were sore afraid” “they were terribly frightened”
c. When they see the glory of the Lord, maybe the words of Moses came to them.

The angel brings some clamminess to them. They were ready to run and get away.
“Fear not” Don’t run away in terrified fear” and here is way.
a. The term “fear not” is used over and over in both New and Old Testament.

a. We don’t to live in fear because the Lord is with us, and that is good news. We have no reason to fear.
The angel had good news for the Shepherds.

a. Jesus was born to be our saviour from the judgment of sin that we deserve.
b. The Messiah they (Jews) had been waiting for had just been born.
c. This was great news for all people.

12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

Two signs for them the find the new born baby.
a. Swaddling clothes. (wrapped in cloths) this would indicate a newborn baby.
b. Laying in a manger: Narrowed down the search to places where animals fed.

“host” is a multitude. A great number of God’s angels. What a sight this must have been.
They praised God. It may have been in words, it may have been in song.
a. They gave glory to God. The show glory and honor at its best.
b. They announced that the that the coming of Christ would bring peace, and good will (kindness, pleasure, delight, satisfaction) to men (all_

II. The Shepherd’s Search

15 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Beth-lehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.

15 When the angels had gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds began saying to one another, “Let us go straight to Bethlehem then, and see this thing that has happened which the Lord has made known to us.”
Once the angels were gone back to heaven, the shepherds began to talk about what had just happened, and talk about what to do.
a. They had a choice to make.
b. They made the right choice. “lets’ go”
c. Lets go see this great thing that has happened.
d. Which the Lord has made unto us.

16 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.

16 So they came in a hurry and found their way to Mary and Joseph, and the baby as He lay in the manger.
They didn’t wait util morning. They have a meeting and take a vote. They left in a hurry.
​They went in a hurry, they were eager and excited to find this baby the angle had told about. They were not told Mary and Josephs name.
a. Were not told how long it took them, I believe the Holy Spirit lead them.
b. When the Lord speaks to us, through reading his word, praying, through the preaching of His word. We need to respond, don’t delay.
c. He will lead you.
2. They find what they were looking for.
a. What did Mary and Joseph think?
b. They may not have understood everything that was going on, but they knew that this was something special.
c. When they head out, they don’t keep this great news to themselves.

III. The Shepherd’s Response. VS 17-20

17 And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.

They told Mary and Joseph, and any who else that may have been there. (Mid wife) What was told to them by the angels.
a. Now this news, this great news was to good to keep to themselves. They told others they saw, they made it known publicly.

18 And the disciples of John and of the Pharisees used to fast: and they come and say unto him, Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but thy disciples fast not?

18 And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.

What an amazing story. “they wondered” means they marveled. Those that were there, how did you find out about this birth? How did you know where to go?
a. They told about the message from the angel. They marveled at this.

Every mom remembers the birth of their child.
a. Mary remembered what was told to her by the angel, now the shepherds came to visit, they were told by the angels. Mary treasured the things in her heart.

20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

20 The shepherds went back, glorifying and praising God for all that they had heard and seen, just as had been told them.
They had had a pretty exciting night. They returned to their the fields, glorifying, praising God. For what they had heard, and what they had seen.
a. We need to be glorifying and praising God. We have a lot of reason to be glorifying and praising God.

b. Think all the blessing in your life. This up coming year, keep a journal.

c. Glorifying and praising God from from the depths of our hearts is true worship. We can do this when we sing, we can do this when we pray, we can do this in our giving.
d. The great reason we should be praising God. The message the angel gave Joseph.
