Good Evening its good to be in the house of the Lord, its good to see everyone tonight. Well tonight were going to be talking about the supernatural birth of Jesus. Really digging into our Saviors Birth and the beautiful complexity that is there.
“Hark the Herald angels sing, glory to the New born King.
Peace on Earth and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled
Joyful all ye nations rise, join the triumph of the skies
with angelic hosts proclaim glory to the newborn king
Hark the herald angel sing, glory to the Newborn King”
A great Hymn and every verse ends with glory to the New Born King. He is the Prince of Peace, the son of Righteousness The everlasting deity and most of all EMMANUEL God with us. Turn with me to the book of Matthew.
One day Jesus asked the pharisees from whose son will the Messiah be?
They answered Him and said… Son of David. Royalty, they saw Him as a man born in the line of David. That is exactly what the OT declared back in we are told that the greater son of David who will establish Gods kingdom would come through the royal line of David. Whoever is the Messiah, whoever is Gods annointed King must be a descendant of David.
That is Matthew begins the way he does.
The record of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham:
Then you have a detailed geneology coming down all the way to verse 16
Jacob was the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, by whom Jesus was born, who is called the Messiah.
The messiah must be a son of David, the Messiah is in Davids bloodline, and he has to be because he is the King of the Jews. Let me just say this, part of the problem of the pharisees was that they were looking for an earthly king to be the king of the JEws, the werent looking for a Eternal king who would be the King over all Kings.
He must be in the bloodline of David he has to have had the blood of David coursing through his veins. He did through Mary, and He had to have a right to the throne which He did through Joseph. Because the authority to the throne had to come from the earthly father. But he had to be more than just the Son of David HE had to also be the Son of God Himself. That is the message that Matthew gives us starting in 18.
Not only is he in the bloodline of David but He is divine. He is not just man, not just royalty, He is divine.
Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit.
And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned to send her away secretly.
But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
“She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”
Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet:
“Behold, the virgin shall be with child and shall bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which translated means, “God with us.”
And Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife,
but kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he called His name Jesus.
Mary’s Son is God with us Mary’s Son is Emmanuel. We are introduced to God Himself when we are introduced to Jesus Christ. This account of His birth is a very critical identifying mark which sets him apart from any and every humand being who has ever been born.
He is the only One who has ever been born concieved by God in the womb. The God man fully God and fully human. Matthews focus is on Jesus’ Kingship on His royal right that He has as God’s anointed. Thats why he gives the royal bloodline at the beginning and then he gives this account of his birth which shows that the whole act of His birth was the very hand of God the Father at work stepping into human history.
Matthew shows us Jesus all throughout his gospel this picture of Jesus as King, let’s take a quick look at that.
First of all Matthew shows us:
The King Revealed
The King Revealed
We see this in the fact that Matthew shows us the bloodline of a King, HIs birth is dredded by a rival King.wise men offer Him royal gifts, His herald JTB declares that He is a King and that His kingdom is at hand. His temptation reaches its climax when He is offered the kingdoms of this entire world, by Satan. His sermon on the mount is called the manifesto of the King in that sermon Jesus sets forth the standards neccesarry if anyone wants to be a part of His kingdom.
His miracles are his royal credentials His parables are called the “mysteries of the kingdom”
He is called the Son of david but is also called the Son of God He claims freedom from paying tribute to Earthly kings because He Himself is the King over all Kings. He makes a royal entry into Jerusalem where He proclaims Himself to be the King. While facing the cross He says that He will rise again from the dead and He will establish His future Kingdom.
He proclaims Soverign power to command angels, even His last words are a Kingly command, ALL AUTHORITY HAS BEEN GIVEN UNTO ME IN HEAVEN AND EARTH GO THEREFORE....
Matthew shows us that Jesus is the King, Gods anointed One. But Matthew also presents Him as:
The Rejected King
The Rejected King
The rejection of Jesus is shown even before His birth.
His mother was in danger of being rejected by Joseph, at His birth Jesus faced the possibility of death, Jerusalem was troubled by His birth, Herod wanted Him dead, and in Matthews account of His birth the mothers in Jerusalem weep as their sons are slaughtered in an attempt to kill the true King.
His forerunner JTB is arrested imprisoned and beheaded.
During the time of Jesus’ ministry He has no place to even lay his head. He is a wanderer His parables teach others of His kingdom and they are rejected by His people. IN His death He is forsaken by HIs people, He is forsaken by HIs Father in Matthew there is no account of a repenant thief praying there is no sympathy as He faces death. But Matthew does describe all the ways in which Jesus was mocked and scorned and spit upon.
No other gospel teaches the bitterness of the rejection of the King like Matthew. But finally He focuses not just on the revealing of the king and the rejection of the king but also on the
The Return of the King
The Return of the King
No other gospel says as much about the 2nd coming of Christ as does Matthew it is a gospel of victory. The King is to be revealed, he is to be rejected, and He is going to return and set up HIs Kingdom on Earth and reign there forever and ever.
Matthew begins at the very beginning about His birth. Just a little note about the geneaology of Jesus. In His geneology you have a list of all the men who are in this Davidic bloodline but tucked in this Geneaology there are 4 women. Interesting women, there is Tamar guilty of prostitution and incest, Rahab a prostitute and idol worshipper, Ruth from Moab whose whole line was cursed because it came from incest, Bathsheba who was an adulteress woman and whose husband was murdered out of that adultery.
Those are the 4 women mentioned in the Son of Gods bloodline. Which is declaration by God that the King is a gracious King. The King has come to identify with sinners.
But nothing identifies Jesus as being the divine Son of God like His birth. His birth shows us that He came from Heaven. The facts are clear Mary and Joseph are betrothed not yet married but engaged. Joseph knew Mary was pregnant and he knew that was not his child.
Were then told the child was conceived inside the womb by the Holy Spirit. Then Joseph is commanded to marry her, and name the child who is God with us, with the name Jesus.
The Virgin Birth
The Virgin Birth
Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit.
This is a simple explanation of a staggering divine miracle. The Bible does this alot, it states things that are beyond our comprehension. We dont know anything about Mary really. We learn about her sister Elizabeth thats really all we know. We look at and we get her geneology, we know they were related and Elizabeth was the wife of Zacheriah the preist and they were the parents of JTB.
We know she lived in Nazareth, it was a blue collar town.
We know nothing about MArys family, but we do know about her character
“BE IT UNTO TO ME ACCORDING TO YOUR WILL”
She is 13 or so she worships and submits to the will of the Lord even though it would cost her everything.
She is a righteous young girl, a slave of the Lord who believes what the Lord says and only wants to do what He wants her to do. She is a Godly young girl.
She is betrothed to Joseph, this is much more serious than our engagements today, people get engaged then unengaged all the time. But in the Jewish plan for marriagewhen you were engaged or betrothed that was a binding legal covenant. You literally bound yourself for life to the one you had desired to marry.
it was a legal contract binding 2 people together for life. Betrothal was a trial period there were several months what was that for? It was to make preparations for the wedding that would be a big responsibility of his, but this was also a trial period to see if the person you were betrothed to would be faithful to that covenant.
It was a time to prove your Holiness and your righteousness. It was before they came together.
They were set by legal contract for a marriage and MAry comes up pregnant.
The worse possible situation would be that a betrothed woman would become pregnant. Thats why you had the trial period to prove her integrity and virtue.
She knew before Joseph knew maybe she was just trying to figure out how to explain that, since that had never happened before. Now Joseph found out that she was pregnant. I cant imagine the shock and the devastation because this was the girl Joseph wanted to marry he had to be on a roller coaster of emotions.
Happy he has found the woman he wants to spend the rest of his life with and is preparing for the wedding and now she is pregnant. So a cloud of suspicion and scandal is hanging over her head because she doesnt know how to explain this, there is really no way to explain it. Now Joseph is in shock because he found out she is pregnant and he cant understand it.
So
And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned to send her away secretly.
Part of being righteous is being compassionate. This is a righteous man he doesn’t want to see the person he loves die, even though he felt like he was dying inside. He loves her and doesnt understand what has happened.
But his heart is compassionate toward her.
Now this Virgin birth will be confronted
Its confronted by Joseph, He desires to do what is pleasing to God, Mary was precious to him but he had to do what was right but he doesnt want harm to fall on her. So he intended on putting her away secretly. There’s not bitterness no hatred just confusion and compassion.
Apparently during all of this confusion he falls asleep trying to figure out what he going to do with the love of his life.
Matthew 1:
But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
What an unbelievably shocking dream.
He probably felt insecure, he may have wondered why he wasnt good enough for her, and then he might have thought maybe she is not good enough for me. Now an angel of the Lord has appeared to Him in a dream and tells him that he has planted life within marys womb!
Now he has to be thinking man if I wasnt good enough for her before I certainly am not good enough for her now! If out of all the world God has chosen her to be the mother of His only Son!
he is told that the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit. This is shocking it is the same message Mary had in
Matthew 1:
“She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”
Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet:
“Behold, the virgin shall be with child and shall bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which translated means, “God with us.”
And Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife,
but kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he called His name Jesus.
