14 The Power of the Spirit
The Holy Spirit is the third member of the Trinity. Jesus describes the person and work of the Holy Spirit in . We may be taught lessons not learned from books or man if we allow the Holy Spirit to work in us.

A. Freedom Through the Spirit—vv.

1. Contentment—v. . No condemnation in Christ—.

2. Christ—v. . The power of the life-giving Spirit is ours through Christ—.

3. Commandments—v. . What the law could not do for man, God gave His Son to accomplish—.

4. Conversion—v. . “So now we can obey God’s laws if we follow after the Holy Spirit and no longer obey the old evil nature within us”—LB.

B. Failure Without the Spirit—vv.

1. Comparison—v. . Those who follow the flesh will practice sinful living—. Spiritual fruit is seen in .

2. Choice—v. . We have a choice—“to be carnally-minded is death but to be spiritually-minded is life and peace.” See also ; ; .

3. Corruption—vv. . Carnal living cannot please God—; .

C. Faith Through the Spirit—vv.

1. Salvation—v. . “But you are not doing what your sinful old selves want to do. You are doing what the Holy Spirit tells you to do, if you have God’s Spirit living in you. No one belongs to Christ if he does not have Christ’s Spirit in him”—NLT.

2. Submission—v. . When Christ is in us, our body is dead to sin; we have crucified the flesh, affections and lusts—; .

3. Spirit—v. . The Holy Spirit will quicken our mortal bodies as it quickened the body of Christ—.

D. Fellowship Through the Spirit—vv.

1. Spirit led—vv. . We are not to live the old way after we have been born again—. We are then sons of God—. We have been adopted into God’s family—.

2. Spiritual liberty—vv. . We no longer are in bondage. God’s Spirit in us is the proof that we are His children and heirs—.

3. Spiritual longing—vv. . Present sufferings are not worthy to be compared with the glories of heaven—. We desire to be with Christ.

If we permit, the Holy Spirit will guide, teach and make us what God wants us to be; but we must be willing to cooperate. Certain things we must do ourselves, but the Spirit will work in us and through us, if we permit Him to do so.
