THE SPIRITUALLY-RICH PASTOR
,
A tax assessor came to a pastor one day to ascertain the amount of taxes he would have to pay.
“What property do you possess?” asked the assessor.
“I am a very wealthy man,” replied the minister.
“List your possessions, please,” the assessor instructed.
I.
I have everlasting life ().
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
II.
I have a mansion in Heaven ().
“In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you.
I go to prepare a place for you.”
III.
I have the peace of God which passes all understanding ().
“And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
IV.
I have joy unspeakable ().
“Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory.”
V.
I have divine love which never fails ().
“Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.”
VI.
I have a faithful wife ().
“Who can find a virtuous woman?
for her price is far above rubies.”
VII.
I have healthy, happy children ().
“Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.
“Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise;
“That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.”
VIII.
I have true, loyal friends ().
“A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.”
IX.
I have songs in the night ().
“Yet the Lord will command his lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life.”
X.
I have a crown of life ().
“Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.”
The tax assessor closed his book and said, “Truly you are a very rich man, but your property is not subject to taxation.”
