Advent Candles
intro -
Welcome
We are so glad you were able to join us this morning
this morning we will continue in our series on Advent
We have defined advent as the coming of a notable person
That notable person is Jesus
The first candle
(light the blue candle)
Expectation of Hope
Jeremiah 33:14–16 NASB95
14 ‘Behold, days are coming,’ declares the Lord, ‘when I will fulfill the good word which I have spoken concerning the house of Israel and the house of Judah. 15 ‘In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch of David to spring forth; and He shall execute justice and righteousness on the earth. 16 ‘In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will dwell in safety; and this is the name by which she will be called: the Lord is our righteousness.’
Jesus brings Hope to the Hopeless
The second candle
(light the blue candle)
Preparation of Peace
Isaiah 40:3–5 NASB95
3 A voice is calling, “Clear the way for the Lord in the wilderness; Make smooth in the desert a highway for our God. 4 “Let every valley be lifted up, And every mountain and hill be made low; And let the rough ground become a plain, And the rugged terrain a broad valley; 5 Then the glory of the Lord will be revealed, And all flesh will see it together; For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”
the way you do that is by being honest and saying God, I am a sinner and I need you
last week we introduced the 3rd candle
(light pink candle)
Proclamation and Joy
we wont cover the gender reveal parties
Isaiah 9:6–7 NASB95
6 For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. 7 There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, On the throne of David and over his kingdom, To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness From then on and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will accomplish this.
church that is why we often struggle with the joy of Jesus
because we are so focus on the here and now the temporary rather than the eternal
a lot of pastors struggle, myself included because they base their upcoming week on 1 hour during Sunday
because they like a lot of people focus so much on a temporary thing and expect Jesus to come in and fix just that one thing and make us happy
Jesus wants to come in because he has fixed the sin problem and bring us Joy!
this brings us to todays candle
(light blue candle)
The Revelation and Peace
Luke 2:10–14 NASB95
10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; 11 for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 “This will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, 14 “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.”
The message of the angels was do not be afraid because they are bringing good news, great Joy
that good news church is that Jesus has come
This brings us to our last candle
The Christ Candle
(light center candle)
Luke 2:1–20 NASB95
1 Now in those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus, that a census be taken of all the inhabited earth. 2 This was the first census taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3 And everyone was on his way to register for the census, each to his own city. 4 Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, 5 in order to register along with Mary, who was engaged to him, and was with child. 6 While they were there, the days were completed for her to give birth. 7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son; and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. 8 In the same region there were some shepherds staying out in the fields and keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; 11 for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 “This will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, 14 “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.” 15 When the angels had gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds began saying to one another, “Let us go straight to Bethlehem then, and see this thing that has happened which the Lord has made known to us.” 16 So they came in a hurry and found their way to Mary and Joseph, and the baby as He lay in the manger. 17 When they had seen this, they made known the statement which had been told them about this Child. 18 And all who heard it wondered at the things which were told them by the shepherds. 19 But Mary treasured all these things, pondering them in her heart. 20 The shepherds went back, glorifying and praising God for all that they had heard and seen, just as had been told them.
This is the story of Jesus
how awesome this story is and how amazing this story is!
This is what advent is all about
advent defined if you will recall is the coming or arrival of a notable person
See Jesus is that notable person
like we learned last week this little boy was going to save the world
Jesus came to seek and save those who were hurting and lost
That is you and I
Jesus came into my life when I was 7 yrs old and from that point it has been a roller coster ride, I have had mountain top moments and had vally moments, i have been in the belly of a whale before too
But it is the coming of Christ that saved me
It is Jesus that saved me through his death on the cross
Romans 3:23 NASB95
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
this says that you and I are sinners
Romans 5:8 NASB95
8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
this says that while you and I were still sinners, Jesus loved us enough to die for us
Romans 6:23 NASB95
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
this says that because of our sin we all deserved today
BUT
But Jesus paid that debt on the cross with his inocent life
Romans 10:9–10 NASB95
9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.
This says how you and I can be saved
it is admitting you are a sinner and crying out that you need God
It is a once and for all thing
As we move to our normal time of invitation I want to invite you to reflect on your relationship with Christ
if you do not have one then I want you to invite you to begin one today
See if you have Jesus in your heart then you have the light of the world living in you, it is our job to shine that light
light the candles
