Introduction
The cost of discipleship- Last week we focused on
Up the high mountain
Up the high mountain
Jesus was just identified as the messiah by his disciples.
Up the high mountain
Up the high mountain
Jesus introduces the concept of his suffering.
Peter rejects this idea and Jesus tell him out of my sight Satan.
Jesus teaches a new teaching regarding the cost of Discipleship
Denying self, talking up the cross, and following
Saving one’s life (holding) losing life in Jesus and gaining
Ashamed of Jesus and his words, he also will be ashamed
Jesus tells them some will witness his coming in power and glory
Stand for the reading of God’s word verses
Up the high mountain
Up the high mountain
After 6 days Jesus takes Peter, James and John by themselves up a high mountain (prob mount Hermon) about 9 thousand feet about sea level, 12 miles northeast of Caesarea Philippi
Why six days? this event occured on the 7th day from the prediction some of them would witness his glory. This also parallels with Moses’ six day sojourn on Mt Sinai and on the seventh day God called Moses out of the Cloud
He was transfigured before them, His clothes became radiant, intensely white as no one on earth could bleach them. (transfigured) MetemorphOthE “Metamorphosis” Means to be changed into another form, particularly a change on the outside that comes from the inside. The opposite word would be (Masquerade) which is an outward change that does not come from within. Jesus here has a temporary change from that of ordinary human to a divine being in all his glory. (HE IS GLORY)
He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
Whats interesting in Luke’s account of this says in Chapter 9:32 Peter and those who were with him were heavy with sleep, but when they became fully awake they saw his glory! SET THE STAGE So imagine how they were surprised to see the sights they were seeing.
Verse 4 says there appeared with them Elijah with Moses and they were taking with Jesus. Mark doesn’t tell us what they were taking about but Luke does in chapter 9:31
who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.
This is a divine revelation of the glory of Christ. Remember the context, the unbelief of the Disciples and their misunderstanding of the mission of the messiah.
Speak on the relevance of Moses and Elijah (Law and the Prophets) testify to him
To him all the prophets bear witness that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”
I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers. And I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him.
deut
“Remember the law of my servant Moses, the statutes and rules that I commanded him at Horeb for all Israel.
“Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes. And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with a decree of utter destruction.”
The Pillar New Testament Commentary: The Gospel according to Mark Removing the Veil: The Transfiguration of Jesus (9:2–8)
The presence of Moses and Elijah thus signifies that Jesus is not a “walk on” in the divine economy, nor is his revelation as the Son of God (v. 7) an anomaly or arbitrary expression of the divine will. Rather, the presence of Moses and Elijah as forerunners attests to the culmination of a purposeful revelation of God’s Son with the history of Israel. Moreover, although Moses and Elijah speak with Jesus, they do not remain with him, for when the cloud is removed in v. 8 both figures vanish. Thus, the witness of Moses and Elijah points to Jesus and culminates in him, but their witness does not rival his. Their word and work are consummately fulfilled in Jesus
Possibly happening in the fall around the feast of Tabernacles
For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.
For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory.
So Peter wakes up and says to Jesus it is good for them to be there. He says lets make three tents or Tabernacles, the text says he didn’t know what to do or say for he was terrified.
FALL FEASTs Possibly happening in the fall around the feast of Tabernacles, if you read you will see if the nations do not come and celebrate the feast of Booths there will be pushishment. Peter assumes what he is experiencing is the ushering in the kingdom now. He doesn’t know what to do but he has read before so he’s like lets build tabernacles now. What he was falling to understand is God would provide his own tabernacle. Jesus is God dwelling with Humanity.
This revelation is John’s testimony “the word became flesh”
The climax of the transfiguration when they hear the heavenly voice “this is my beloved son; listen to him.” Remember says God will raise up a prophet… You must listen to him. Jesus so often pleading with people to hear and understand him. The literal meaning of the text means “be obedient to him”
Remember Peter had rejected what Jesus had told him about his mission. The divine voice from heaven is necessary for the disciples to grasp the one point they cannot accept- THAT THE SON MUST SUFFER! and so too his disciples. The cloud overshadowing them probably like the bright white cloths point to the Shekinah Glory of God.
verse 8 says suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them but Jesus only. Peter James and John have just experienced a divine revelation of God. The’ve heard the voice of God, now Jesus remains to complete his journey to Jerusalem to finish his mission.
Its apparent the disciples missed the point of the revelation. Jesus charges them to tell no one of what they had seen until he had risen from the dead. Verse 10 says
They kept the matter to themselves but questioned what this rising from the dead might mean. (they believed and knew of the general resurrection in the end)
For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased,” we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain. And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
2 Peter 1
Now its clear Peter still misunderstood the purpose of the transfiguration of Jesus
in verse 11 shows us they disciples were confused regarding the coming of Elijah they knew the prophecies to be fulfilled and 4
Jesus makes it clear John the baptist ministered in the power (luke 1:16-17)
it is written of the son of man and should suffer many things and be treated with contempt
They killed John the baptist
Conclusion
Conclusion
the word for transfigured also appears in the NT
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.
2. We must accept the call to follow the example of Jesus. We lay down our lives for His sake. We deny ourself and become fully committed to Jesus. We too are being glorified and will be glorified.
3. living with intention and with the eternal perspective
4. Be aware of the lessons Jesus is teaching us, pray for eye that see and perceive.
5. He is more than a prophet He is the GOD man
