Introduction:

1. The word Doctrine is used 16 times in 1 & 2 Timothy and Titus!

A. Paul describes doctrine in 10 ways!

2. “Sound Doctrine” is used 4 times in the NKJV.

3. “And Doctrine or teaching” is used 2 times in the NKJV.

4. “His Doctrine” is used 1 time in the NKJV.

5. “For Doctrine” is used 1 time in the NKJV.

6. “No Other Doctrine” is used 1 time in the NKJV.

7. “To Doctrine” is used 1 time in the NKJV.

8. “In Doctrine” is used 1 time in the NKJV.

9. “Good Doctrine” is used 1 time in the NKJV.

10. “My Doctrine” is used 1 time in the NKJV.

B. Paul refers to Doctrine in one more way!

11. “Doctrine of demons” is used 1 time in the NKJV.

2. Remember the purpose of Paul’s writing to Timothy!

1 Timothy 3:14–15 NKJV
14 These things I write to you, though I hope to come to you shortly; 15 but if I am delayed, I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.
1 Timothy 3:14 NKJV
14 These things I write to you, though I hope to come to you shortly;

Body:

1. “His Doctrine” is used 1 time in the NKJV.

1 Timothy 6.1
1 Timothy 6:1 NKJV
1 Let as many bondservants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honor, so that the name of God and His doctrine may not be blasphemed.

A. What is Paul teaching Timothy about “doctrine” in that will help him and the congregation know how to conduct themselves in the Church?

1. Doctrine belongs to God!

A. What this means is—teachings/instructions on how we ought to live our lives belongs to God alone because Scripture is from God!

2 Peter 1:19–21 NKJV
19 And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts; 20 knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, 21 for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.
2 Pt
1 Peter 1:19–21 NKJV
19 but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. 20 He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you 21 who through Him believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.
1. The word of God was confirmed by a miracle!
1 Pt 1:
2 Peter 1:17–18 NKJV
17 For He received from God the Father honor and glory when such a voice came to Him from the Excellent Glory: “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” 18 And we heard this voice which came from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain.
2 Pt
A. This was the mount of transfiguration!
Matthew 17:1–2 NKJV
1 Now after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, led them up on a high mountain by themselves; 2 and He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light.
Matt 17:3-
Matt. 17:1-
1
Matthew 17:3–4 NKJV
3 And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him. 4 Then Peter answered and said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if You wish, let us make here three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
Matt 17:
Matthew 17:5–6 NKJV
5 While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and suddenly a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!” 6 And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their faces and were greatly afraid.
1. According to Peter, what was confirmed on the Mount of Transfiguration and what we are to hear or listen to when the Father declared “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!” was all Scripture!
A. Why?
1. Because no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation!
2 Peter 1:20 NKJV
20 knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation,
2. Prophecy never came by the will of man.
2 Peter 1:21 NKJV
21 for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.
3. Prophecy came when men were inspired by the Holy Spirit (God).
2 Peter 1:21 NKJV
21 for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.
B. It is Pure, unadulterated Scripture that should guide and teach us how to live.
2 Peter 1:19 NKJV
19 And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts;
2 Peter 1:
1. This means it is not changed by man!
Matthew 15:9 NKJV
9 And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ ”
2. Man should not try to interpret but understand.
2 Peter 3:14–16 NKJV
14 Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless; 15 and consider that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation—as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you, 16 as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures.
2 Peter 3:14–18 NKJV
14 Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless; 15 and consider that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation—as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you, 16 as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures. 17 You therefore, beloved, since you know this beforehand, beware lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked; 18 but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.
2 Pt 3.14-16
2 Peter 3:17–18 NKJV
17 You therefore, beloved, since you know this beforehand, beware lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked; 18 but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.
3. Man should desire to grow and gain knowledge or faith in Jesus from the Scriptures.
Romans 10:17 NKJV
17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
2 Peter 3:18 NKJV
18 but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.

B. It is not the Christian’s function to interpret the Scriptures but to desire to understand what God wants us to know.

1. Our goal should be to rightly divide the word of truth.
2 Timothy 2:15 NKJV
15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
A. Jesus was asked a question—why do you speak to them in parables?
Matthew 13:10 NKJV
10 And the disciples came and said to Him, “Why do You speak to them in parables?”
1. His answer to them was—seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.
Matthew 13:13 NKJV
13 Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.
A. They physically both saw, heard and had an interpretation.
Matthew 13:14–15 NKJV
14 And in them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled, which says: ‘Hearing you will hear and shall not understand, And seeing you will see and not perceive; 15 For the hearts of this people have grown dull. Their ears are hard of hearing, And their eyes they have closed, Lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn, So that I should heal them.’
Matt 13.
1. Jesus showed them who He was over and over again.
A. On one occasion He cast out a demon and they called Him Beelzebub.
Matthew 12:24 NKJV
24 Now when the Pharisees heard it they said, “This fellow does not cast out demons except by Beelzebub, the ruler of the demons.”
Matt 12.
1. They interpreted what He did incorrectly because they did not desire to understand!
2. Unlike those who did not want to understand, Christ’s disciples did, so they asked for His interpretation, instead of putting their own spin on the parable.
Luke 8:9 NKJV
9 Then His disciples asked Him, saying, “What does this parable mean?”
Lk 8
3. Jesus answered them.
Lk 8.11-
Luke 8:11–12 NKJV
11 “Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. 12 Those by the wayside are the ones who hear; then the devil comes and takes away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.
Luke 8:12–13 NKJV
12 Those by the wayside are the ones who hear; then the devil comes and takes away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. 13 But the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away.
Lk 8.12-
Luke 8:14–15 NKJV
14 Now the ones that fell among thorns are those who, when they have heard, go out and are choked with cares, riches, and pleasures of life, and bring no fruit to maturity. 15 But the ones that fell on the good ground are those who, having heard the word with a noble and good heart, keep it and bear fruit with patience.
2. This is what we should do as well, when we have questions and do not understand!
A. Ask the question!
B. Seek the answer.
Matt. 7.7-
Matthew 7:7–8 NKJV
7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.
1. Search the Scriptures.
Acts 17:11 NKJV
11 These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.
C. Listen to the answer.
Revelation 2:29 NKJV
29 “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” ’
Remember
1. Remember to use you eyes and ears to hear, see, and understand, so that it will be given to you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 13:11–13 NKJV
11 He answered and said to them, “Because it has been given to you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. 12 For whoever has, to him more will be given, and he will have abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him. 13 Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.
Matt 13.11-
D. Ask God for wisdom.
James 1:5 NKJV
5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

Conclusion:

1. When we don’t live the way God desires, God’s name and His doctrine are blasphemed!

A. What did Paul desire for us to learn?

1. It is God’s doctrine not ours!

2. When we understand that doctrine does not belong to us but to God, then we will desire to hear, listen, and understand!

3. Until we hear, listen, understand, and apply it, God and His doctrine is blasphemed.
