To See & to Secure

Luke 2:25–32 KJV 1900
25 And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him. 26 And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. 27 And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law, 28 Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said, 29 Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart In peace, according to thy word: 30 For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, 31 Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; 32 A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.
Simeon is a man to whom we know little about, except that he had a great testimony before the Lord- we see this in scripture...
In personal study, we find historical documentation that gives us a little insight into the life of this man called Simeon -
background
job
testimony....
According to Matthew Henry, He sites some learned men who have studied and spoken with the Jewish writers -
Simeon was a great man of note in Jerusalem...
Son of Hillel, and the first to whom they gave the title Rabban (the highest title that they gave to their doctors - and has only been given to 7 men)
Simeon succeeded his father as president of the college his father had started, and of the great Sanhedrin as well.
They say that Simeon had a Prophetical Spirit - and was eventually put out of his place because of his stance against the Jews in their stance on the temporal kingdom of the Messiah....
But regardless - we find this Godly man in the temple and he see’s the Messiah - the Christ child...
Takes him up
Blesses him
Resigns from his duty and charge of service and awaits death… all had been fulfilled in his life...
He knew his life’s work had been finished and the Lord fulfilled his promise to him… (God always keeps his promises)
Luke 2:28–30 KJV 1900
28 Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said, 29 Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart In peace, according to thy word: 30 For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,
Simeon saw something....
Simeon saw Someone...
But this seeing was not enough...

2690 That Speck Of Light

An artist once drew a picture of a winter twilight—the trees heavily laden with snow, and a dreary, dark house, lonely and desolate in the midst of the storm. It was a sad picture. Then, with a quick stroke of yellow crayon, he put a light in one window. The effect was magical. The entire scene was transformed into a vision of comfort and cheer. The birth of Christ was just such a light in the dark world.

—Sunday School Chronicle

It is one thing to see - but it is quite another to secure....
I want to look at a couple of things about this interaction between Simeon and His Salvation....

1. He Saw

What was it that Simeon saw??

a. Law

Mary & Joseph -
Coming to the temple
Luke 2:22–24 KJV 1900
22 And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord; 23 (As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;) 24 And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.
Present the child before the Lord
the circumcision had already been done
Present an offering
came to the temple w/ a sin offering
we see then need of a sacrifice - lamb
came w/ ceremonial gift - an offering
Present themselves clean
Ceremonially they were unclean -
Mary had given birth to a male child and the law stated that she was unclean for 33 days (66 for a girl)
unable to come to temple
unable to come offer sacrifice
unable to participate in spiritual events or w/ people

b. Light

Luke 2:29–32 KJV 1900
29 Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart In peace, according to thy word: 30 For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, 31 Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; 32 A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.

1896 Light A Candle To See Sun?

The public has a deep respect for the amazing scientific advances made within our lifetime. There is admiration for the scientific process of observation, experimentation of testing every concept to measure its validity. But it still bothers some people that we cannot prove scientifically that God exists. Must we light a candle to see the sun?

—Wernher Von Braun

A. in the face of this babe He saw LIGHT
“A light to lighten the gentiles...”

C. Love

a. Jesus - is the perfect manifestation of God to this world
The person of God in the flesh
The present of God - Love / forgiveness
John 3:16 KJV 1900
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
1 John 4:8 KJV 1900
8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
1 John 4:16 KJV 1900
16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.

Luke 2:29–31 KJV 1900
29 Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart In peace, according to thy word: 30 For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, 31 Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;
Servant Simeon - held in his arms.... the One in whom he had already believed....
This babe was the culmination and fulfilment of scripture and a promise given to him by God....

Salvation -

it is not in our abilty to keep ourself saved any more than it is to get ourselves saved
