2 Timothy 2:1–8 ESV
You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also. Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No soldier gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him. An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules. It is the hard-working farmer who ought to have the first share of the crops. Think over what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything. Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, the offspring of David, as preached in my gospel,
Acts 20:28 ESV
Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood.
1 Peter 5:1 ESV
So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed:
1 Peter 5:1–2 ESV
So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly;
Titus 1:5 ESV
This is why I left you in Crete, so that you might put what remained into order, and appoint elders in every town as I directed you—
The church is to be led by a plurality of called, qualified men.
5 Key Mistakes Pastors- Especially Lead Pastors- Make
1. Relational Isolation (v.1a)
2. Avoiding Weakness (v.1b)
3. Forgetting Discipleship (v.2)
4. Shunning Suffering (v.3)
John 16:33 ESV
I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
5. Chasing Comfort (v.4-6)
Hebrews 13:17 ESV
Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.
Elders to Candidates:
"Do you covenant today to serve under Jesus, our head pastor, to serve as one of his appointed elders? Do you covenant to protect Jesus' flock from false teachers, feed the flock with sound biblical doctrine, discipline the flock in love when necessary? Do you covenant to regularly pray for the people of this church and lead them courageously and sacrificially? Do you covenant to manage your responsibility well, work hard to care for the flock, attend to their needs, and seek to raise up other elders alongside you as Jesus provides it? If so say, 'I do.'"
"By the confession of your mouth today, are you able to honestly say with a right heart and conscience that you meet the biblical qualification for being an elder? Are a man who is above reproach, a one woman man, one who is sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, teachable and able to teach? Can you affirm that you are not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not argumentative, not a lover of money? Can you confirm that you manage your household well, and if you have children that you discipline them, and in love? Can you say that you are mature in your faith, have missional relationships, are dignified and not double-tongued? Are you a man who is able to identify and refute false doctrine and can you say that you are a man whose belief in Jesus is deeply real and true? If so say, "I am.'"
Elders to Mere Members:
"For members of Mere Church, do you covenant today to respect these men? To look to them for council and wisdom? To go to them when you are suffering or struggling and to ask them for prayer? Do you promise to listen to and obey them when they speak under the authority of Scripture since they are men whom Jesus has placed to watch over your souls? 'If so say, "We will."
