The Warnings of God
Matthew 2:11–15 NKJV
11 And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 12 Then, being divinely warned in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed for their own country another way. 13 Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, “Arise, take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word; for Herod will seek the young Child to destroy Him.” 14 When he arose, he took the young Child and His mother by night and departed for Egypt, 15 and was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, “Out of Egypt I called My Son.”
Introduction -
I. Introduction
Christmas Is Past
Past in our experience this year -
how many events do you remember from the past year?
So many things can change in a year -
have any of them changed you?
Also past in the scene before us in the Bible
The Worship of the Wise Men Came After the Birth of Christ
We are not sure just how long after His birth
May have been up to two years (2:16)
They journeyed a very long way
When It Was Time to Depart, They Were Warned of God (v. 12)
There are many warnings in the Bible
Joseph was also warned in this text
God has special purposes in His warnings
Message
God’s Warnings Are to Change the Direction of Our Lives (v. 12)
“They departed into their own country another way”
If they had gone back the same way, they may not have made it back at all
They had to change their plans -
If they had not changed, God’s purpose might not have been fulfilled
Consider this - Free will, or predestination, or both
Arrived in Jerusalem
Summoned to meet with Herod
They did not go back by the same route
Meeting Christ by faith changes the way we take in life
Meeting with Jesus by faith, should prepare us to receive warnings also
Many people don’t want to be warned about anything
Some pseudo Christians would like to remove the warnings from the text
its true sometimes warnings can seem unpleasent
But the truth is there are many warnings in the bible. Consider a few of these Warnings:
Amos 4:12 NKJV
12 “Therefore thus will I do to you, O Israel; Because I will do this to you, Prepare to meet your God, O Israel!”
; ;
Romans 6:23 NKJV
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
;
; ;
Hebrews 12:6 NKJV
6 For whom the Lord loves He chastens, And scourges every son whom He receives.”
Paul took the light from heaven as a warning ()
5. Paul took the light from heaven as a warning ()
Jonah saw his time in the great fish as a warning ()
Some of the harshest warnings in the bible come from Jesus Himself
Revelation 2:12–16 NKJV
12 “And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write, ‘These things says He who has the sharp two-edged sword: 13 “I know your works, and where you dwell, where Satan’s throne is. And you hold fast to My name, and did not deny My faith even in the days in which Antipas was My faithful martyr, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells. 14 But I have a few things against you, because you have there those who hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balak to put a stumbling block before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed to idols, and to commit sexual immorality. 15 Thus you also have those who hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which thing I hate. 16 Repent, or else I will come to you quickly and will fight against them with the sword of My mouth.
Revelation 2:18–22 NKJV
18 “And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write, ‘These things says the Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire, and His feet like fine brass: 19 “I know your works, love, service, faith, and your patience; and as for your works, the last are more than the first. 20 Nevertheless I have a few things against you, because you allow that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, to teach and seduce My servants to commit sexual immorality and eat things sacrificed to idols. 21 And I gave her time to repent of her sexual immorality, and she did not repent. 22 Indeed I will cast her into a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they repent of their deeds.
Revelation 2:18–24 NKJV
23 I will kill her children with death, and all the churches shall know that I am He who searches the minds and hearts. And I will give to each one of you according to your works. 24 “Now to you I say, and to the rest in Thyatira, as many as do not have this doctrine, who have not known the depths of Satan, as they say, I will put on you no other burden.
Revelation 2:18–23 NKJV
23 I will kill her children with death, and all the churches shall know that I am He who searches the minds and hearts. And I will give to each one of you according to your works.
Jonah 2:1–8 NKJV
1 Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the fish’s belly. 2 And he said: “I cried out to the Lord because of my affliction, And He answered me. “Out of the belly of Sheol I cried, And You heard my voice. 3 For You cast me into the deep, Into the heart of the seas, And the floods surrounded me; All Your billows and Your waves passed over me. 4 Then I said, ‘I have been cast out of Your sight; Yet I will look again toward Your holy temple.’ 5 The waters surrounded me, even to my soul; The deep closed around me; Weeds were wrapped around my head. 6 I went down to the moorings of the mountains; The earth with its bars closed behind me forever; Yet You have brought up my life from the pit, O Lord, my God. 7 “When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the Lord; And my prayer went up to You, Into Your holy temple. 8 “Those who regard worthless idols Forsake their own Mercy.
Revelation 2:12–15 NKJV
Revelation 2:16–20 NKJV
16 Repent, or else I will come to you quickly and will fight against them with the sword of My mouth. 17 “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give some of the hidden manna to eat. And I will give him a white stone, and on the stone a new name written which no one knows except him who receives it.” ’ 18 “And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write, ‘These things says the Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire, and His feet like fine brass: 19 “I know your works, love, service, faith, and your patience; and as for your works, the last are more than the first. 20 Nevertheless I have a few things against you, because you allow that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, to teach and seduce My servants to commit sexual immorality and eat things sacrificed to idols.
Has God sent a warning to you? A crisis? A setback? A tract? A rebuke?
God’s Warnings Are to Deliver Us from the Destroyer (v. 13)
We should welcome the warnings from God - they are to protect and save us
Why do so many people scoff at the warnings?
God’s will is not that any should perish
They were warned of Herod’s intent: “Herod will seek the young child to destroy him”
Herod’s aim when he talked to the wise men
Talked of worship … intended wickedness
Talked of dedication … intended destruction
Herod typifies Satan … the destroyer ()
John 10:10 NKJV
10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.
The seducer doesn’t want to warn you. The devil wants you to be comfortable
he will gladly comfort you all the way into hell
its been the same since the beginning, when the serpent said “you shall not surely die”
Jesus came to destroy the works of the destroyer ()
1 John 3:8 NKJV
8 He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.
God’s Warnings Are to Direct Us into the Design of His Word (v. 15)
“That it might be fulfilled”
God intends to bring our lives into line with the Bible
The bible will be fulfilled; every jot and tittle
but we each have free will - As Mordecai told Esther
It had been written “Out of Egypt have I called my son”
Egypt a symbol in Scripture of the world
God is calling His people out of the world ()
1 John 2:15–16 NKJV
15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world.

Is your life governed by the Bible? Or by the world?
