You survived Christmas and now New Years lies just ahead.
Some of you are making New Years resolutions.
You are planning what you hope to accomplish and how you would like to live come 2019.
I thought this morning would be a good morning to think about who we would like to be in 2019 and allow scripture to mold us in to this New You for 2019.
Paul and Silas are placed in prison for for commanding the spirit inside of this girl to come out of her.
The Spirit comes out of her and the owners see their hope of making a profit is gone.
The owners seized them and DRAGGED them into the marketplace to the authorities and they said these men are disturbing our city.
They are Jews.
The mob joins in on the attack against them
The chief magistrates stripped off their clothes and ordered them to be beaten with rods.
After they had inflicted many blows on them, they threw them in jail, ordering the jailer to keep them securely guarded.
All this happened because they freed a young girl from the bondage of a spirit or slavery.
They were doing good and obedient to Jesus and the result was that they were beaten and thrown in prison.
Turn to Philippians 1
As you turn there you are wondering what does this have to do with a New Year and and New You.
For some you say in the New Year I want to stay our of prison GREAT! others are saying hey a little break from life maybe prison doesn’t sound to bad for 2019.
JK
What would your response be if you were Paul and Silas?
Would you be mad at God or maybe a little bitter at God. God I am trying to do good and now I have been beaten, stripped of my clothes and now I am in prison.
Thanks God.
This was not the attitude of Paul during this time in his life.
Paul writes the book of Philippians and so we get to see into His heart and his life.
When I think about 2019 and a New Year this is the heart and goals I desire.
Typically when you set New Years resolutions they are all about YOU
Let’s look at Paul’s response to this situation
Paul’s Identity
Slaves of Christ Jesus
They are in chains and shackles and he says we are Slaves of Jesus
Thinking of Others
Focused on Jesus
New Year New You
How?
