A HEART SET FREE
2~/23~/2002 AND 2~/24~/2002
(Solving Your Identity Crisis # 1)
Psalm 119
32 */I run in the path of your commands, for you have set my heart free./*
-I am beginning a series called, “A Heart Set Free”.
-You might ask, “Set Free From What?”
-A heart set free from the lies and deception of the world, the flesh and the devil about you.
-Who are you anyway?
How did you arrive at the conclusion of who you are?
-They tell you in Psychology that you are an accumulation of what you think and what others think.
-The truth is that you could all be wrong.
! Maxwell example of Victor Seribriakoff
-The only place to find the truth about you is from God.
-As I prepared this sermon and meditated on who I would be speaking to, I realized that many people have gone or are going through an identity crisis.
-You may be just out of high school, in junior high, at mid-life, or just facing some major changes.
-We are conditioned to judge ourselves by external things: looks, money, background, or even who is most spiritual.
1Samuel 16:7 But the LORD said to Samuel, `Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him.
The LORD does not look at the things man looks at.
*/Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart."/*
Galatians 2:6 As for those who seemed to be important--whatever they were makes no difference to me; */God does not judge by external appearance/*--those men added nothing to my message.
-I don’t want to create a good feeling about who you are by cheerleading….I want to build a Biblical case based on the truth.
-*We need to come to a place where we fully love and accept ourselves because God fully loves and accepts us.*
* *
-It can’t be based on what others think about us or how we feel, it must be based on God’s assessment of us.
2 experiences:
*/When I was called to Scotland the Lord answered my fears about the future by telling me that He loved me./*
*/ /*
*/Recently in prayer on a Wednesday morning the lord spoke to my heart and I was aware of the Scripture where Jesus is affirmed at His baptism.
I realize with Jesus that it was for others but we all need affirmation./*
*/ /*
Mark 1
11 And a voice came from heaven: "You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased."
1 Corinthians 7
*/23 You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of men./*
*/ /*
Ephesians 3
8 Although I am less than the least of all God's people, this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ,
9 and to make plain to everyone the administration of this */mystery/*, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things.
10 His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms,
11 according to his */eternal purpose/* which he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord.
12 In him and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence.
*/ /*
-In order to understand God’s value of you, you have to see what He did to get you.
-The terms here that we have to remember are */mystery of the ages and eternal purpose./*
*/ /*
-Here is the short version of that incredible truth.
THE ETERNAL PURPOSE
-God had a plan for man before He ever said *let there be light*.
Ephesians 1
4 For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight.
1 Peter 1
20 He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake.
Revelation 13
8 All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast--all whose names have not been written in the book of life belonging to the Lamb that was slain from the creation of the world.
-In order to understand what has happened on the earth you have to see what happened before we were here.
-Satan was created and was an angel like Gabriel and Michael.
-He became proud and led a rebellion against God.
He didn’t want to direct worship to God anymore, he wanted to get it himself.
-Some of the angels followed him and they lost their place with God.
-Oddly enough, God didn’t respond with the death sentence.
He is a good steward and always uses every opportunity.
Romans 9
*/22 What if God, choosing to show his wrath and make his power known, bore with great patience the objects of his wrath-- prepared for destruction?/*
*/ 23 What if he did this to make the riches of his glory known to the objects of his mercy, whom he prepared in advance for glory-/*
*/ 24 even us, whom he also called, not only from the Jews but also from the Gentiles?/*
*/ /*
-In other words, what was the real issue?
Is God good or not?
Can He be trusted or not?
-Satan said no.
He also told mankind that in the Garden of Eden.
-The entire Bible is a story of God revealing Himself to man.
-He would reveal another aspect of Himself in every encounter with man.
-He would reveal Himself as healer, deliverer, all-powerful, etc.
-God revealed Himself in:
*/CREATION/*
*/MANKIND HAS A REMNANT/*
*/JESUS/*
*/ /*
Hebrews 1
3 The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being,
John 1
15 ¶ John testifies concerning him.
He cries out, saying, "This was he of whom I said, `He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.'"
16 From the fulness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another.
17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
18 No-one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father's side, has made him known.
-Jesus perfectly expressed the Father’s heart.
-Then He went even further and died for man revealing the remarkable sacrifice that God paid for man.
Matthew 13
44 ¶ "The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field.
When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.
45 "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls.
46 When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.
-That gives these parables a new twist.
It wasn’t just us selling everything for a treasure.
-It was God trading everything for you.
-The result is a demonstration to the universe for eternity of the truth about God.
-You have been chosen to represent God by being an object of His mercy.
WHAT A JOB DESCRIPTION!!
Ephesians 3 NLT
9I was chosen to explain to everyone this plan that God, the Creator of all things, had kept secret from the beginning.
\\ 10God's purpose was to show his wisdom in all its rich variety to all the rulers and authorities in the heavenly realms.
They will see this when Jews and Gentiles are joined together in his church.
11This was his plan from all eternity, and it has now been carried out through Christ Jesus our Lord.
Ephesians 2 NLT
4But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so very much, 5that even while we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead.
