As we continue in this series on fellowship and unity, we want to discuss what the second part of & have to do with this.
We also want to define “collective action”.
I) Clarity and Honesty
Clarity – sometimes we must admit that our convictions are tentative enough to admit that another view has merit, and we are not certain it is wrong
Honesty – the final level we reach concerning our judgment of fellowship is our judgment of honesty
II) &
Two points are made by Paul:
1- accept the weak brother who is serving in faith
2- do not destroy the weak faith of your brother –
Paul wrote to both the strong and the weak – ie.
both sides in each issue
We must be willing to give up our liberty to avoid causing our brethren to sin – ,
Offense and stumbling do not mean our actions which someone else considers sinful, but to stimulate a brother to violate his own conscience to participate in an activity he doubts is right
What if a brother demands that others submit to his convictions?
– – why did Paul refuse to submit to those who wanted Titus to be circumcised, yet a few months later, had Timothy circumcised –
Remember it is the strong who should submit, not the weak who demand submission
III) Collective action of church
Difference between individual and collective (link and chain) –
The collective acts as one unit – ex.
when treasury is used, it is no longer my money, but the church’s money
Some aspects of our worship and work are collective – the group acting as one unit – such as using or not using an instrument with our singing, choosing teachers/preachers, accepting or rejecting membership, etc.
Some things that are part of our public worship are not collective action:
1- does woman who wears veil cause those who do not believe it is lawful to sin? or does woman not wearing veil cause those who believe it is required to sin?
2- does breaking the bread before distribution cause all partakers to sin? or does not breaking cause all partakers to sin?
3- does an unfaithful leader in worship cause sin?
4- does a refusal of one to take the LS cause sin? does an unlawful taking of LS cause others to sin?
We must understand the distinction between the action of the collective group and the actions of individuals within the group.
Fellowship must be broken only when the sinful actions of the collective cause me to violate my conscience.
