Exposition...
Opening it up.
Observe...
[1.] How fitting for Christ to discharge the office of Mediator.
[2.] Christ’s order and method. From preaching He descends to prayer (because the Word doesn’t work w/out divine grace).
[3.] Observe the care and diligence of the Lord Jesus in holy things.
“looked up to heaven” (v1).
The Scripture highlights Christ’s gesture or position.
The raising of the heart to God in prayer.
Spiritual reverence of God ().
It shows confidence in God.
To show that their hearts are taken up from the world and from worldly desires.
“and said” (v1)
First, Why He prayed.
This was the agreement between God and Him ().
That we might have a copy of His intercession.
That these prayers might be a constant fountain of spiritual blessings.
To commend our task of prayer.
That our prayers might be effectual.
Secondly, Why Christ spoke out loud in prayer.
Our Advocate is also our teacher for our comfort and instruction.
THEN THE PRAYER ITSELF.
“Father”
This is a word of confidence and sweet relation.
We NOTE:
That it’s very sweet and comfortable in prayer when we can come and call God “Father”.
Christ was about to suffer bitter things from the hand of God and yet calls Him Father.
We should do this in our afflictions.
Maintain the comfort of adoption.
Behave ourselves as children, with patience and hope.
[1.] With a submissive patience.
[2.] With hope.
“the hour has come” (v1).
That hour which was defined in God’s decree, set down and appointed by the council of the Trinity.
That hour which was determined and foretold in the prophecies.
The hour has come, the sufferings of God’s people are very short.
The hour has come and therefore He prays.
Christ knew His hour.
Christ knew that the hour has come, yet doesn’t seek to avoid the storm by flight.
The act of Christ’s death was quickly over (just an hour).
“Glorify Your Son”
Glory in His sufferings. ().
[1.] Miracles; while CHrist suffered, the frame of nature seemed to be bent out of shape. (, )
[2.] Support and strength.
2. Glory after death ().
“so that the Son may glorify you”

so that the Son may glorify you

The true remedy to present sufferings is to look to future glory!
Shame sorrow, and death is the roadway to glory, joy, and life; the captain of our salvation was thus made perfect, ; and all the followers of the Lamb are brought in by that method.

‘Glorify me.’ Christ seeketh not the empty things of this world, but to be glorified with the Father.

‘‘Glorify me.’ Christ seeketh not the empty things of this world, but to be glorified with the Father.
Christ himself prayeth to be glorified; it notes the truth of his abasement.
Christ asks what he knew would be given.
“so that the Son may glorify you”
Observe, that God’s glory is much advanced in Jesus Christ.
Manton, T. (1872). The Complete Works of Thomas Manton (Vol. 10, p. 123). London: James Nisbet & Co.
Observe, that we must maintain that this is the way that the Father is glorified and no other.
Observe, that it’s the proper task for a son to glorify his father.
We are to glorify our Father in Heaven. How is that done?
[1.] By reverent thoughts of His excellency.
[2.] By serious acknowledgments, give Him glory.
[3.] When we make the advancement of His kingdom the end of all our actions.
[4.] By making this the aim of our prayers.
[5.] When we are content to put to shame so God might be honored.
[6.] When we make others to glorify God.
[7.] When we can rejoice in God’s glory, though others be more advanced than we are, in the things of God.
[8.] When we’re affected for God’s dishonor by others’ life and behavior.
