Why Colossians -
This is what we’re launching Cistern Church with
Fruit that fell off the table
Paul didn’t know the church at Colossae personally
Colossians 1:3-4
Colossians 1:3–4 ESV
We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints,
“…heard of your faith”
Paul doesn’t know the church at Colossae, he’s only heard of their faith
Colossians 1:5 ESV
because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. Of this you have heard before in the word of the truth, the gospel,
Faith, Hope, & Love
Paul’s understanding of the Christian life can be summarized in these 3 words.
Faith in what Christ has already accomplished on our behalf
Love for God and man
Hope in life eternal with God and what is to come
Colossians 1:6–8 ESV
which has come to you, as indeed in the whole world it is bearing fruit and increasing—as it also does among you, since the day you heard it and understood the grace of God in truth, just as you learned it from Epaphras our beloved fellow servant. He is a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf and has made known to us your love in the Spirit.
Colossians 1:6-7
Colossians 1:6–7 ESV
which has come to you, as indeed in the whole world it is bearing fruit and increasing—as it also does among you, since the day you heard it and understood the grace of God in truth, just as you learned it from Epaphras our beloved fellow servant. He is a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf
Unstoppable nature of the Gospel
vs. 6 is a description of the gospel. The last word of vs. 5 is “gospel” comma, then vs. 6 describes it
“…come to you” (It’s moving, empowered by the Spirit to go)
“in the whole world”
It’s growing “ bearing fruit and increasing”
It leave evidence everywhere it goes - “As it also does among you” : You (Colossae) are evidence of the Spirit’s power in ensuring the gospel go’s
and I would argue you (Grace Life Baptist Church) are evidence of that as well.
Our task : Faithfulness
Not everyone will plant a church.
But everyone should strive to be faithful
