A church who prays together stays together
Matthew 18:15–20 NASB95
15 “If your brother sins, go and show him his fault in private; if he listens to you, you have won your brother. 16 “But if he does not listen to you, take one or two more with you, so that by the mouth of two or three witnesses every fact may be confirmed. 17 “If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector. 18 “Truly I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven. 19 “Again I say to you, that if two of you agree on earth about anything that they may ask, it shall be done for them by My Father who is in heaven. 20 “For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst.”
(NASB95)
Here we see jesus dealing with sin and discipline and how we ought to deal with a brother
Here we see jesus dealing with sin and discipline and how we ought to deal with our brother
But in dealing with this Jesus is making some clear and powerful statements
by the mouth of two or three witnesses every fact may be confirmed or established.
Or established.
jesus is saying there is power in agreement
Matthew 18:17 NASB95
17 “If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.
matt 18:17
17 “If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.
Verse 17 speak of if the person doesn’t repent that he should be treated like an unbeliever. It uses the example of the Gentile and tax collectors
Those who deliberately rebel against God
Matthew 18:18 NASB95
18 “Truly I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven.
matt 18:
18 “Truly I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven.
This text tells us the authority that we are giving bu Jesus.
On earth as it is in heaven
Now jesus goes back to agreement here
Matthew 18:19 NASB95
19 “Again I say to you, that if two of you agree on earth about anything that they may ask, it shall be done for them by My Father who is in heaven.
19 “Again I say to you, that if two of you agree on earth about anything that they may ask, it shall be done for them by My Father who is in heaven.
Now the qualification here is if 2 people agree.
Now that easier said than done why?
For there to be Agreement there has to be humility And where there is humility there is unity
And where there is humility there is unity
Psalm 133:1–3 NASB95
1 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is For brothers to dwell together in unity! 2 It is like the precious oil upon the head, Coming down upon the beard, Even Aaron’s beard, Coming down upon the edge of his robes. 3 It is like the dew of Hermon Coming down upon the mountains of Zion; For there the Lord commanded the blessing—life forever.
(NASB95)
1 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is
For brothers to dwell together in unity!
2 It is like the precious oil upon the head,
Coming down upon the beard,
Even Aaron’s beard,
Coming down upon the edge of his robes.
3 It is like the dew of Hermon
Coming down upon the mountains of Zion;
For there the Lord commanded the blessing—life forever.
When we come together corporately God releases his blessing And His presence
And His presence
Matthew 18:20 NASB95
20 “For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst.”
20 “For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst.”
I want to talk today about the important of gathering together to pray.
God did not make an island. By design, we were made to be social.
Just as important as milk a baby need human contact.
Genesis 2:18 NASB95
18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.”
(NASB95)
(NASB95)
Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone;
We where not made to go though life by ourselves
He continues and says….
I will make him a helper suitable for him.”
Just as God gave man a wife to help him he gave us the church to be a help to us
Gods knows we need help…
Luke 10:1 NASB95
1 Now after this the Lord appointed seventy others, and sent them in pairs ahead of Him to every city and place where He Himself was going to come.
(NASB95)
(NASB95)
1 Now after this the Lord appointed seventy others, and sent them in pairs ahead of Him to every city and place where He Himself was going to come.
He send them out in pair.. Some translations say 2 by 2
And what happen?
Luke 10:17–19 NASB95
17 The seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.” 18 And He said to them, “I was watching Satan fall from heaven like lightning. 19 “Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will injure you.
(NASB95)
(NASB95)
17 The seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.”
18 And He said to them, “I was watching Satan fall from heaven like lightning.
19 “Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will injure you.
This is the power of unity.. the power of coming together.. the power of team work
Deuteronomy 32:30 NASB95
30 “How could one chase a thousand, And two put ten thousand to flight, Unless their Rock had sold them, And the Lord had given them up?
(NASB95)
(NASB95)
30 “How could one chase a thousand,
Mark 3:23–27 NASB95
23 And He called them to Himself and began speaking to them in parables, “How can Satan cast out Satan? 24 “If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25 “If a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. 26 “If Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but he is finished! 27 “But no one can enter the strong man’s house and plunder his property unless he first binds the strong man, and then he will plunder his house.
And two put ten thousand to flight,
Unless their Rock had sold them,
And the Lord had given them up?
(NASB95)
23 And He called them to Himself and began speaking to them in parables, “How can Satan cast out Satan?
24 “If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.
25 “If a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand.
26 “If Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but he is finished!
27 “But no one can enter the strong man’s house and plunder his property unless he first binds the strong man, and then he will plunder his house.
Notice the context of jesus speaking about the kingdom when he is accused of casting out a devil be a devil.
He says a house divided cannot stand
I want to deal with the house as a metaphoric term
As in circle group. That who are apart of your community. Your church
The point Jesus is making `here is about Satan kingdom and the kingdom of God God kingdom bring confusion and divisions to Satan.
And if he house is defeated he will be finished
Now the devil knows this same principle and such is the reason he wants to separate us from God.
“A congregation without a prayer meeting is essentially defective in its organization, and so must be limited in its efficiency.” The Prayer Meeting and Its History, J. B. Johnston
A church is never more like the New Testament church than when it is praying.
Acts 1:12–14 NASB95
12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey away. 13 When they had entered the city, they went up to the upper room where they were staying; that is, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon the Zealot, and Judas the son of James. 14 These all with one mind were continually devoting themselves to prayer, along with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.
(NASB95)
The Upper Room
12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey away.
13 When they had entered the city, they went up to the upper room where they were staying; that is, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon the Zealot, and Judas the son of James.
14 These all with one mind were continually devoting themselves to prayer, along with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.
Prayer bring the church into unity
Acts 2:1–4 NASB95
1 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance.
(NASB95)

4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance.
Prayer brought forth power
“A dynamic praying church must be built from the inside out, employing all four levels of prayer: the secret closet, the family altar, small group praying and finally, the congregational setting.” Developing your Secret Closet of Prayer, Richard Burr, p 19.
“As prayer meetings fail in a congregation, so will the ministrations of the pastor become unfruitful, the preaching of the word fail to convert sinners and promote holiness in the professors of religion.” The Prayer Meeting and Its History, J. B. Johnston
Five young college students were spending a Sunday in London, so they went to hear the famed C. H. Spurgeon preach. While waiting for the doors to open, the students were greeted by a man who asked, “Gentlemen, let me show you around. Would you like to see the heating plant of this church?” They were not particularly interested, for it was a hot day in July. But they didn’t want to offend the stranger, so they consented. The young men were taken down a stairway, a door was quietly opened, and their guide whispered, “This is our heating plant.” Surprised, the students saw 700 people bowed in prayer, seeking a blessing on the service that was soon to begin in the auditorium above. Softly closing the door, the gentleman then introduced himself. It was none other than Charles Spurgeon.
When Jesus teaches us to pray in , He tells them first to pray we “our Father.”
Why? Because its Corporate and community…
Give us this day. Our daily bread.. forgive us.. our debt.. as we.. forgive our.. lead us.. but deliver us
We have to learn to pray with and for each other.
In a time of crisis says
Joel 2:15–17 NASB95
15 Blow a trumpet in Zion, Consecrate a fast, proclaim a solemn assembly, 16 Gather the people, sanctify the congregation, Assemble the elders, Gather the children and the nursing infants. Let the bridegroom come out of his room And the bride out of her bridal chamber. 17 Let the priests, the Lord’s ministers, Weep between the porch and the altar, And let them say, “Spare Your people, O Lord, And do not make Your inheritance a reproach, A byword among the nations. Why should they among the peoples say, ‘Where is their God?’ ”
15 Blow a trumpet in Zion,
gather the people to pray
Consecrate a fast, proclaim a solemn assembly,
16 Gather the people, sanctify the congregation,
Assemble the elders,
Gather the children and the nursing infants.
Let the bridegroom come out of his room
2 Chronicles 7:14–15 NASB95
14 and My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land. 15 “Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to the prayer offered in this place.
And the bride out of her bridal chamber.
17 Let the priests, the Lord’s ministers,
Weep between the porch and the altar,
And let them say, “Spare Your people, O Lord,
And do not make Your inheritance a reproach,
A byword among the nations.
Why should they among the peoples say,
‘Where is their God?’ ”
gather the people to pray
(NASB95)

James 5:14–16 NASB95
14 Is anyone among you sick? Then he must call for the elders of the church and they are to pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; 15 and the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed sins, they will be forgiven him. 16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.
(NASB95)
Either we are sick or in sin we much come together and pray for one another

Why?
The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.
A church who prays together stays together…
When paul and silas where in jail… they know the prayer of agreement…
Acts 16:25–26 NASB95
25 But about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns of praise to God, and the prisoners were listening to them; 26 and suddenly there came a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison house were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone’s chains were unfastened.
(NASB95)

26 and suddenly there came a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison house were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone’s chains were unfastened.
Prayer will set you free.
If two of you agree on earth about anything that they may ask, it shall be done for them by My Father who is in heaven.
20 “For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst.”
Lastly we must gather and pray for our leaders
Acts 12:4–7 NASB95
4 When he had seized him, he put him in prison, delivering him to four squads of soldiers to guard him, intending after the Passover to bring him out before the people. 5 So Peter was kept in the prison, but prayer for him was being made fervently by the church to God. 6 On the very night when Herod was about to bring him forward, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and guards in front of the door were watching over the prison. 7 And behold, an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared and a light shone in the cell; and he struck Peter’s side and woke him up, saying, “Get up quickly.” And his chains fell off his hands.

We must pray for the deacon elders pastor leaders of our church as well..
