The Good News
The Good News
Isa
: My favorite chapter of the Bible (God used it to give me my call)
4 songs of the anointed one in Isaiah- prophecies relating to Jesus, the coming messiah.
This one is in 1st person, which is unique and connects us directly to Jesus reading the scroll after his baptism in the temple and saying “today this has been fulfilled in your midst”
What does this mean for us?
This is a beautiful, practical description of the Gospel- good news. Good tidings.
Good Tidings to the Poor- People who are helpless due to their circumstances.
Heal the Broken-Hearted: This covers every human breakdown- binding (surgery putting it back together- the heart being the essence of your psyche/ your inner man)
To preach good tidings to the poor;
Liberty to the captives/ opening of the prison to those who are bound: release- root is paqah- to open the eyes- “coming from a dark dungeon into the light for the first time” squinty eyes- Overwhelming light!
The New King James Version. (1982). (). Nashville: Thomas Nelson.
These 3 conditions and their consequential solutions: Poverty, Broken-heartedness, and captivity would be quite an experience.
Poor people don’t ordinarily receive good news
Broken hearted people don’t magically receive healing and soothing
People in dark captivity don’t get to see the light of day.
Salvation for these people is an overwhelming 180 in their lives!
A complete transformation!! (It is the type of experience that changes your life forever!)
Note what this is not:
Not A belief system or creed. (I believe the right things....so)
Not Something these people earned- God helps those who help themselves (false)
Not Good news designed for those who are doing life well:
We can believe this lie that Christianity is for people who have it all together. Not the case- Poor, Broken and Captive!
Vs 2- The acceptable year of the Lord-
Jubilee- Year of atonement-
All property returned to the original division by God to HIs people- a restoration of the original plan!
Explain Jubilee- 50 years property returned, etc.
Jesus brings a permanent jubilee! I restoration of what God intended for our lives.
Because of this, we receive this great exchange
Beauty for ashes- ashes were a token of grief/ when done grieving put oil on head- and beautify yourself.
Oil of joy for mourning-
Praise for heaviness-
Why? So that we may be righteous. It is His kindness that leads us to repentance. Salvation does not begin with a heavy judgment.
Trees of righteousness/ Oaks of righteousness in .
We have work to do as we will see next week.
Me often feeling this shame- Not measuring up to others.
Hiding sin and struggle.
Working hard to compare...
Does anyone else feel this?
The Gospel is for you. The good news! You are God’s type of people, who recognize your spiritual poverty.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they will be filled.
Altar Call- admitting I am a sinner. I need Jesus. I don’t have it all together.
