Intro:

David Livingston once said, “I place no value on anything I have or may possess, except in relation to the kingdom of God. If anything will advance the interests of the kingdom, it shall be given away or kept, only as by giving or keeping it I shall most promote the glory of Him to whom I owe all my hopes in time or eternity.”
Today we begin a new series on stewardship entitled, Stewardship: God’s Plan for Life Management.” Nothing in life really belongs to us; it is all God’s. God has only made us as managers of what is His.
Ps 24:
Psalm 24:1–2 NASB95
The earth is the Lord’s, and all it contains, The world, and those who dwell in it. For He has founded it upon the seas And established it upon the rivers.
Therefore, we will all give an account to God for how we managed what is His. Even things that God has given to us for us, we will have to give an accounting of, and that is the subject of this first sermon. (Announce sermon title).

Message

A steward is a manager, an overseer of another’s property.
Everything belongs to God (e.g. ; ). Therefore, anything we have belongs to Him and is only in our management while we live.
Even our bodies belong to Him (). This we will discuss at a later date.
Quality of stewardship is based on what you do w/ that which you are a steward of.
I. Everyone is a Steward.
Rom
Romans 14:12 NASB95
So then each one of us will give an account of himself to God.

but they will give account to Him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.
Everyone will stand before the judgment seat of God.
We will be judged according to the deeds done in the body.
2 Corinthians 10:5 NASB95
We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ,
God has given us these treasures so that we would live righteously and holy lives before Him.
We will give an accounting for what we did w/ these treasures. Did we use and apply them to our lives in order to live victoriously or did we squander them?
2 Peter 1:2–4 NASB95
Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord; seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence. For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust.
II. Enlightenment is the greatest of all treasures
This is what Paul is referring to in our text.
Read vv. 6-7 again
I believe the single greatest area we will have to give an account for is our salvation; it is, after all, the greatest of all treasures.
Salvation is a package when opened, it brings forth bounties from heaven.
Salvation is not an end of itself; it is a means to an end.
The end of our salvation is fellowship w/ the Father, but even now in this life salvation means more than just having our names written in heaven; it means more than being forgiven of our sins, and it means more than an escape from hell.
Salvation is an open door into the rich storehouses of God.
When we stand before God we will be w/out excuse b/c He has given to us all we need to live godly.
There are three bounties of salvation or spiritual enlightenment I want to examine.
Enlighten is the Gr. φωτισμος and means a spiritual enlightenment; illumination for the inner life, a revealing.
See
Acts 26:18 NASB95
to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the dominion of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who have been sanctified by faith in Me.’
Acts 26:18 NASB95
to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the dominion of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who have been sanctified by faith in Me.’
Salvation brings spiritual illumination w/ it and there are three primary areas it illuminates.
Salvation brings spiritual illumination w/ it and there are three primary areas it illuminates.
If we are good stewards of our salvation these will come to light and empower us to live righteously and godly.
A. Wisdom & Knowledge of God
Colossians 2:3 NASB95
in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
The storehouse of wisdom and knowledge is part of the treasure w/in the believer through enlightenment of the gospel.
They are hidden in Christ; not hidden from us but hidden for us.
We will be judged according to the deeds done in the body
B. The Anointing
2 Corinthians 5:10 NASB95
For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.
His way of being and doing.
We have been given kingdom life and kingdom principles to live by.
We have also been given dominion; are we ruling and reigning or being ruled?
Matthew 13:44 NASB95
“The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found and hid again; and from joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.
This enlightenment brings us an anointing and all it contains.
Luke 16:11 NASB95
“Therefore if you have not been faithful in the use of unrighteous wealth, who will entrust the true riches to you?
Luke 16.11
Jesus goes on in the following vv. speaking on this subject; He concludes in v. 13 by saying “you cannot serve God and wealth.”
The anointing is the true riches of which He speaks in v. 11.
1 John 2:27 NASB95
As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him.
The anointing is the yoke destroying power of God.
The anointing is not a thing or an it; the anointing is the Holy Spirit.
W/out this anointing you aren’t even saved.
We will give an accounting for what we did w/ those treasures. Did we use and apply them to our lives in order to live victoriously or did we squander them?
C. The Word of God
Enlightenment also gives us the ability to understand the word of God.
We cannot understand the word w/out the Holy Spirit.
1 John 2:27 NASB95
As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him.
Psalm 119:11 NASB95
Your word I have treasured in my heart, That I may not sin against You.
Job 23:12 NASB95
“I have not departed from the command of His lips; I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my necessary food.
When we treasure our salvation and in particular these three aspects of it, we will automatically be good stewards of them.
1 John 2:27 NASB95
As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him.
It is imperative that we be good stewards of our salvation b/c it truly is the Greatest Treasure of All.
