Lord Teach Us to Pray

9/1/2001 and 9/2/2001

Luke 11

1 ¶ One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples."

2 He said to them, "When you pray, say: "`Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come.

3 Give us each day our daily bread.

4 Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation.'"

5 Then he said to them, "Suppose one of you has a friend, and he goes to him at midnight and says, `Friend, lend me three loaves of bread,

6 because a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have nothing to set before him.'

7 "Then the one inside answers, `Don't bother me. The door is already locked, and my children are with me in bed. I can't get up and give you anything.'

8 I tell you, though he will not get up and give him the bread because he is his friend, yet because of the man's boldness he will get up and give him as much as he needs.

9 "So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.

10 For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.

11 "Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead?

12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion?

13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"

Matthew’s version in chapter 5:

9 ¶ "Pray, then, in this way: 'Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name.

10 'Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, On earth as it is in heaven.

11 'Give us this day our daily bread.

12 'And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

13 'And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. [For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.]' (NASB)

-Jesus was a man of prayer.

-Those who were around Him noticed that His prayer was the key to His success and power.

-They didn’t say teach us to preach.

-They didn’t say teach us to heal.

-They said TEACH US TO PRAY

-Jesus then gives them the model prayer.

-We call it the Lord’s Prayer.

-It is laid out in a way where we have markers to lead us into specific areas.

-I like the TABERNACLE PRAYER.

-This prayer is the same way…each phrase is like a door that releases you into another room of the house.

1.           Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. (NASB)

Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy. (BBE)

-The key to prayer is putting on Christ first.

-You spend the first part of prayer putting off the old and then putting on the new.

-You focus on who you are in Christ and make whatever adjustments need to be made.

-In the first room you address God as FATHER.

-You are a child of God. You can address Him as FATHER.

-He is your Father but His name is still holy and to be reverenced.

-Yahweh or Jehovah is the self-existent one who reveals Himself.

-Your relationship to God is a constant revelation of Him and your response to that.

-In other words, what does that mean to you and do to you?

-He revealed Himself to people in experience and they would name Him or a place after the aspect of God revealed to them.

-Abraham named a place Jehovah Jireh/God my provider.

You are my Father by the blood of Jesus.

You are Jehovah Tsidkenu-my righteousness

You are Jehovah M’Keddesh-my sanctifier

You are Jehovah Shalom-my peace

You are Jehovah Shammah-you are present with me

Jehovah Rophe-my healer

Jehovah Jireh-my provider

Jehovah Nissi-my banner

Jehovah Rohi- my sheperd

-You are receiving in your relationship to Him whatever He is.

Ac 17:28 `For in him we live and move and have our being.'

2.           your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

-You are praying God’s will like we talked about last week.

-This is often in the prayer where your will and God’s will clash and you submit to Him.

You establish God’s will by prayer in:

YOURSELF

YOUR FAMILY

YOUR CHURCH

NATION

THE WORLD

-My priorities are:

GOD

MY LIFE AS A RESULT OF KNOWING GOD

MY WIFE

MY CHILDREN

THIS CHURCH

THIS COUNTRY

THE NATIONS

-You are agreeing with God for His perfect will to come to pass.

3.           Give us today our daily bread.

-You are praying very specifically for the needs of your family.

-This isn’t just for money but whatever you need to survive and thrive.

-Pray specifically, if you need clothes, ask Him.

-If you need a car, ask Him.

-I also pray for the church’s needs here because I am aware of them.

-There are some conditions:

(Be in the will of God in your church life, your giving, obedience, work habits etc.)

4.           Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

-Ask God to forgive you.

-Accept forgiveness.

-Forgive and release others.

-Forgive in advance those who will sin against you.

-As I preached to the prayer group on Wednesday morning, when the church makes an advance it runs into opposition.

-That opposition isn’t a big devil coming through the woods. We would be on that in a second.

-The opposition is an internal thing.

-It is the temptation to get out of love.

-We have imperfect people here. Without God’s mercy you aren’t going to be able to stand them.

-Sometimes they stink. Sometimes you stink.

-You can’t hurt someone who walks in love.

YOU CAN’T HURT A DEAD MAN.

A DEAD MAN FEELS NO PAIN.

READ MATTHEW 5 FROM THE MESSAGE

-Walk in love, no matter what!

5.           And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.'

-This is a prayer of deliverance.

-It is an ability from God to resist and rise above the forces of the evil one.

Jesus said: John 14:30 "I will not speak much more with you, for the ruler of the world is coming, and he has nothing in Me;”

(NAS95)

-This is putting on the armor of God. This is Spiritual Warfare.

Ephesians 6

10 ¶ Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.

11 Put on the full armour of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes.

12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

13 Therefore put on the full armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.

14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled round your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place,

15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.

16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.

17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.

The belt of truth

Breastplate of righteousness

Feet shod with the preparation of the gospel

The shield of faith

Helmet of salvation

Sword of the Spirit-the word of God

6.           For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.'

-This is humility.

-It is placing God where He belongs.

-It is putting God back in perspective.

-That is what worship does, it puts things back right.
