Walking in the Light
Walking in the Light
The Theme of 1 John is describing how we as believers in Jesus Christ, have fellowship with God
Verse 5 is where John starts his comparison of this fellowship with walking in the light.
This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
1 John 1:5-7
What Does it Mean to Walk in the Light?
It means to be in harmony with God -to agree with him, to walk in the truth.
It doesn’t mean that we need to have a track record of perfection, because things are still being revealed to us. God’s light is continually shining into the corners of our heart, allowing us to choose to be transparent and honest before him.
What are other verses that use the word picture of light in relation with God?
O house of Jacob, come ye, And let us walk in the light of the Lord.
There be many that say, Who will shew us any good? Lord, Lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us.
Ps 43:3
O send out thy light and thy truth: let them lead me; Let them bring me unto thy holy hill, and to thy tabernacles.
For they got not the land in possession by their own sword, Neither did their own arm save them: But thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, Because thou hadst a favour unto them.
Who coverest thyself with light as with a garment: Who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain:
ps 119:
NUN. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, And a light unto my path.
The entrance of thy words giveth light; It giveth understanding unto the simple.
ps 119:130
Be not ye therefore partakers with them.
For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:
(For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)
Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.
And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.
For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.
But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light.
Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.
Eph 5:7-14
What are reasons that people are afraid of the light?
There are afraid that it will reveal something that they would like to keep covered
Why do we cover? -Shame, Fear of …rejection, hurt, pride
Do we know the nature of God? Is he safe?

Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness;
Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:
Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:
In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:
