On January 3rd you read for your devotions &
Today we are going to look at & about Noah .
righteousness: Noah & John
The Key Verse that sums up these passages is

Three Main Questions About Noah

Why did God destroy the world in Noah’s time?
Why did God spare Noah?
What was Noah’s response to God’s news of the upcoming judgment
In understanding these questions - we understand Theology better - we understand who God is - and how we should react based on our knowledge of Him.

Why did God destroy the world in Noah’s time?

This answer can be found in . This passage explains how mankind had fallen into gross sin.
Look at verse 5 to find the answer:ְ
וְ
5 Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
Notice that the thoughts of mankind doomed the earth to its watery grave. Understand that mankind was (& is) evil and all his thoughts were wicked. His evil actions were carried out by his evil thought life.
Notice that it is the thoughts of mankind that had doomed the earth to its watery grave. Understand that mankind is wicked and all his thoughts are wicked.

Thought life

What is your thought life like? Does it reflect the people of Noah’s day or Noah?

Sin Starts in The Heart

Jesus Himself said;
Notice that sin always starts in the heart. Jesus Himself said;
Notice that sin always starts in the heart. Jesus said;
Notice that sin always starts in the heart. Jesus Himself said;
19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies.
19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies.
The people had embraced their sin nature. After all, everyone is born in sin
You are born in sin
5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me.
And in sin my mother conceived me.

Corrupt Mankind

According to verse 12 mankind had corrupted themselves, so God decided to destroy mankind.
Think of it this way. If you have a computer - and it becomes corruptible - what good is it? If you lose all your files and data and it does not work right it becomes trash!
In the same way - man who was made in the image of God turned from the moral, mental, and spiritual image of God and corrupted it with sin.
Look closely at Verses 11 & 13 - what was one of the main “sins” that God hated? It’s an 8 letter word: violence.
Think of it this way. If you have a computer - and it becomes coruptible - what good is it? If you lose all your files and data and it does not work right it becomes trash!

Why Did God Destroy The World?

In the same way - man who was made in the image of God turned from the moral, mental, and spiritual image of God and corrupted themselves.
Because every thought of mankind was wicked
This caused them to become corrupted
This corruption was manifested in violence

Why did God spare Noah?

Notice in verse 8 that Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.
The word grace from the Hebrew is חֵן ḥēn: A masculine noun meaning favor, grace, acceptance.
חֵן ḥēn: A masculine noun meaning favor, grace, acceptance.
So why did Noah find grace in the eyes of the Lord? Look at verse 9:
9 This is the genealogy of Noah. Noah was a just man, perfect in his generations. Noah walked with God.

Understand These Words

What does the word “just” mean?
It is the Hebrew word צַדִּיק (ṣaddiyq) which means: just; innocent; in the right; upright; devout
ṣaddiyq which means just; innocent; in the right; upright; devout
What does the word “perfect” mean?
It is the Hebrew word: תָּמִים (tāmiym) which means: blameless, complete.
meaning blameless, complete.
תָּמִים tāmiym:
תָּמִים tāmiym:
What does the word “walked” mean?
It is the Hebrew word: הָלַךְ (hālaḵ) which means: to go, to come, to walk
הָלַךְ hālaḵ: A verb meaning to go, to come, to walk

These Three Words

So why did God spare Noah? He showed Him grace and favor because:
Noah was blameless (his thoughts were not always wicked)
He was blameless (his thoughts were not always wicked)
He was innocent (not corrupt) like the people.
He would go to (or walk with) God.

Compare The Two

Now compare the wicked world to Noah
They had wicked hearts - his heart was blameless
They were corrupted - He was innocent
They loved violence - He loved walking with God

Starting to understand

Why did God destroy the world in Noah’s time?
Because Mankind has wicked thoughts which brought corruption which lead to violence
Why did God spare Noah?
His thoughts were blameless, he was innocent (compared to the wicked people) and he walked with God.

What was Noah’s response to God’s news of the upcoming judgment

Notice two things Noah did right.
(read verse 22)
Thus Noah did; according to all that God commanded him, so he did.
Thus Noah did; according to all that God commanded him, so he did.

22 Thus Noah did; according to all that God commanded him, so he did.

Thus Noah did; according to all that God commanded him, so he did.

22 Thus Noah did; according to all that God commanded him, so he did

Notice that Noah completely obeyed all that God said!
The second thing he did - we find in

and did not spare the ancient world, but saved Noah, one of eight people, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood on the world of the ungodly;

and did not spare the ancient world, but saved Noah, one of eight people, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood on the world of the ungodly;
Peter is saying that Noah was a preacher or proclaimer of righteousness. He saw the coming doom and tried to warn the wicked world - sadly they did not listen.
righteousness

Noah the preacher

Noah was righteous for three main reasons
He walked with God (was blameless)
He did all that God commanded
He preached (or proclaimed) about the upcoming judgment

Turning my Knowledge of Noah into Wisdom.

Turning my Knowledge of Noah into Wisdom.
As a Christian - you need to walk with God and not be like this wicked world.
As a Christian - you need to do all that God commands you to do.
As a Christian - you need to witness and tell the world of the future judgment

Turning my Knowledge of God into Wisdom.

Understand that God hates wickedness and must judge it
Understand that God looks at my thought life - so I must make sure my thoughts are not wicked
Understand that a Holy God hates violence which is wickedness

Main Point

Proclaim Jesus to the Lost, because judgment is coming.
