“You are special. You are significant. You are really something.” Aren’t these the kinds of things we like to hear about ourselves? Don’t they make us feel good and happy and comforted? Certainly the world will tell us that comfort is found in acknowledging our own meaning. But it’s not true. As Christians we disagree. Comfort is found, first and foremost in our insignificance. Why? Because our comfort begins with the significance, importance, and meaning of our Creator. “God is special” – that’s what we most need to hear. And yes, that leads to our own significance and meaning in the gospel, but first we must pause and dwell on God’s greatness and superiority over all things. That’s the comfort we will be considering this Sunday.
