Introduction:
Introduction:
25 And a lawyer stood up and put Him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 And He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How does it read to you?” 27 And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.” 28 And He said to him, “You have answered correctly; do this and you will live.” 29 But wishing to justify himself, he said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
Luke 10:
I. The Pious Priest
I. The Pious Priest
I. The Pious Priest
I. The Pious Priest
30 Jesus replied and said, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among robbers, and they stripped him and beat him, and went away leaving him half dead. 31 “And by chance a priest was going down on that road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32 “Likewise a Levite also, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.
luke 10:
(v.30) A man descend down the 3000 ft temple mount on his way to Jericho which is 17 miles from on the way some robbers caught him slipping. They strip him of his clothes and possessions, then they almost beat him to death.
(v.31) “And by chance” Jesus I believe is being crafty here, because the sovereign God does not believe in luck or chance everything has been divinely appointed. This tells me that the man may have been traveling a road that was known for being dangerous in so much that folks did not travel down that road.
(v.31) “A priest was going down on that road” Jesus is using hyperbolic speech. He went right to the top of the religious food chain into the pulpit, by having the first person to see this man being a priest(preacher). Jesus is attacking the foundational structure of the Pharisees religious system.
How did this priest respond to the half-dead traveler?
(v.31) “and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side”
a. “And when he saw him”---Tell me about this phrase. This priest saw him: He was aware of his predicament. He was aware of his pain, He was aware of his need. He saw him with physical eyes, but that is where it stopped, it never got past his physical eyes to his spiritual eyes. I believe because his spirit was dead.
b. “he passed by on the other side” Wow!!!!! Do you see this response?? There may be a religious reason that he did this. According to the Law the Priest would be unclean if he touch a dead body. There was however a provision that if he was the only one to provide burial services to the dead he was free to do that without defilement.
(v.32) “Likewise a Levite also, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side” During the NT times “Levites” performed menial duties in the temple. They were priest but they were not called on for the main duties of the priest duties. They supported the priest. That is why Jesus separated them from “the priest” in (v.31) by telling the story like this Jesus is stressing that poor attitudes roll downhill.
Pt of Application:
If the leadership of the church lacks compassion, mercy and grace you can expect the attitude of the congregation to follow
(v.32) “when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side” His response was the same as his mentor. He learned well. They avoided this man most likely for religious reason.

Reasons why we go to the other side of the road:
Someone else will take care of it.
I don’t want to be scene helping someone like that
I can send them some money, but I don’t want to intertwined my family with them.
I don’t know what to do, so out of fear I do nothing
I don’t have time. My time is too precious to slow down and give aid.
-I would venture to say most of fall into one of these reasons as to why we don’t let our Spiritual Eyes take over from our Physical Eyes when we see pain.
I will help the financially
The story is told of two sociologists who were walking down the street. They saw a man lying unconscious and covered with cuts and bruises from a terrible mugging. One of the sociologists turned to his colleague and said, “Whoever did this terrible deed really needs our help.”

Transition Statement-Let’s take a look at the Third Traveler on the Road
II. The Sensitive Samaritan
II. The Sensitive Samaritan
33 “But a Samaritan, who was on a journey, came upon him; and when he saw him, he felt compassion, 34 and came to him and bandaged up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them; and he put him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 “On the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper and said, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I return I will repay you.’
luke 10:33-
(v.33) “But a Samaritan” Now Jesus is really rebuking them low-key. Look at who this traveler is. This is a Samaritan traveler. This traveler is the last one who would offer help to a Jewish man because of the natural enmity(beef) that existed between these two ethnic groups. This is strategic by Jesus. You remember the Lawyer asked “who is my neighbor?” this question was not a legitimate quest for knowledge, but a mild rebuke to Jesus. He was essentially saying I take of my own. He is asking “what am I missing?”
(v.33) “who was on a journey” another strategic fact by Jesus. He wanted to convey that this man had things he was doing, and he had places to go. He was not taking a late night stroll for exercise he was on a mission.
Conclusion
(v.33) “came upon him” Another strategic point. You will notice that this step of investigation was not put into the narrative of “the priest” This man was spiritual sensitive enough to slow down and get close to this man.
Sidenote: Sometimes we intentionally avoid the hurting, because we believe by avoiding we escape accountability. I can hear the priest saying “he looked dead to me, so you know we can’t touch the dead”
(v.33) The Samaritan was willing to bend down and check his pulse! He cared enough to touch his chest and see if it was still rising. He was not scared of the responsibility that comes from finding someone that needs help.
(v.33) “and when he saw him, he felt compassion” Now notice Jesus uses the same grammatically structure that he used in the previous verses. “and he saw them” meaning he saw that same thing that “the priest saw” I see a man the needs help. But there is an added phrase:
a. “He felt compassion” Here is the difference between the apathetic and the compassionate
Apathy-Only see with physical eyes---excuses
Compassionate---see with both physical eyes and spiritual eyes. They view every encounter as a gospel opportunity. Every encounter is a chance to put God on display. Every meeting is a chance to extend the love of God to the hurting.
34 and came to him and bandaged up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them; and he put him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn and took care of him.
(v.34)
-HIs compassion went past words and move to a measurably action. It did not say he prayed for him it says “he bandaged up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them” This is a personal sacrifice. He used his traveling oil & wine on the traveler giving him less for his trip.
-He put him on the beast. Meaning he walked along side while the injured traveler rode(Sacrifice)
-He brought him to an inn and took care of him---He paid for lodging and he lost several days on his own trip(sacrifice)
35 “On the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper and said, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I return I will repay you.’
-
-He made long-term provision for his care. He didn’t just leave him stranded.
Sidenote-I recognize that God may be calling you to do all these things for a person, or he may just want you to be the starting point of their care. Whatever he ask you must see with spiritual eyes to complete the task.
Conclusion
Conclusion
-Jesus asks a question:
(v.36) “Which one of these three do you think proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell into the robbers’ hands?”
37 And he said, “The one who showed mercy toward him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do the same.”
