Introduction

Here we are at the beginning of the New Year.
Let me ask you a question....
What can you do with the Lord’s help to see these things happen?
What do you think the Lord would ask of you this year?
Well you can pray!
You can pray?
And as a second question, How does your desires relate to what you think the Lord would desire of you?
You can work, serve, some thing whereby you are laboring toward that goal?
I think there must be a harmony of both, our lives should provide a mirror the desire the Lord has for his people. Remember we are His servants....
Tonight I want us to address the Great Commission of our Savior....
lets look at ;
Matthew 28:18–20 ESV
18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
This passage is our central focus as a child of God.
Now this passage also corresponds to one that is found in the book of Acts chapter 1.
Why is it so important? Jesus is getting ready to ascend to heaven, all that He has taught His followers, it is finalized here. Go and make disciples!
That is our marching orders till He returns!
We are going to look this passage for a moment and we will continue to build upon it Sunday morning as well.
Why? we must be communicating the message of the gospel continually, that is what Jesus demands of us.
So lets begin with Jesus first words to His disciples....
Verse 1, Jesus came to them and said t them “all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”
By what authority do we act? The Bibel says it is Jesus authority.... Jesus says it has been given to him.
One such place we see that dominion has been given to him.... Book of Daniel.
Daniel 7:13–14 ESV
13 “I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. 14 And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.
And then if we look at lets see....
John 3:35 ESV
35 The Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand.
That is only two of the verses that remind us that Jesus was given authority by the Father, to work , to be a sacrifice for sin, and to be Lord. That word authority speaks of ruling authority, it means authority over a dominion or sphere of influence.
Now, because Jesus has been given this authority, He calls us to act under that authority...
Now look at verse 19
Matthew 28:19 ESV
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
The word “Go” there is a very emphatic word, it is that fact that we are going every day, we go along the course of our days.. And as we go… we have work to do....
The word “Go” is like we will get up tomorrow, we have tasks before us… we go to the store, we go to work, to the golf course, to the lumber yard, whatever the task it… and as we go.... there is work to do!
As you and a person talk, you just invite them to church, maybe the opportunity opens for you to share the gospel. But the command is to go and do all of this along the course of our days.
And what are we to do, what is the work?
Verse 19 says to make disciples of all nations.
A disciple is a true follower of Christ,
We say that a disciple is a responsible follower of Jesus Christ. Responsible meaning that they will be doing
All Nations refers to everyone, all nations (Ta Ethnos) means all people groups in the Greek. So the gospel message is meant of every person, no matter race, geographic origin anything…rich or poor, this one or that one, all must have the opportunity to hear ...
Listen to Luke 24:47
Luke 24:47 ESV
47 and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
Q. Let me ask you a question, why is it harder to share the gospel with those closest to you?
And then Jesus says baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Now listen to this
Mark 16:16 ESV
16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.
Q. Another question..... is baptism necessary for Salvation… No!
Q. Another question..... is baptism necessary for Salvation… No!
So what is Mark saying there??????
Augustine says - We know that those who believe in the Lord from their own heart do this of their own will and free choice.

Baptism is here put for the external signature of the inner faith of the heart, just as “confessing with the mouth” is in Ro 10:10; and there also as here this outward manifestation, once mentioned as the proper fruit of faith, is not repeated in what follows (Ro 10:11).

Then why do we baptize? Jesus command it. It is a symbolic act of obedience illustrating that the old life is dead, buried, and we are not new, risen to walk in Christ.
Then why do we baptize? Jesus command it. It is a symbolic act of obedience illustrating that the old life is dead, buried, and we are not new, risen to walk in Christ.
It is a humble expression to the world that we are His followers.
Now verse 20
Now verse 20
Matthew 28:20 ESV
20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Instructing them in the ways of the faith, One of the best things the church had years ago was a thing called “Training Union.” So many people came and went to it to learn, and it just seems to have died out.
The best command here seems to be from this final word, I am with you always, even to the end.
That is encouraging my friends… who is with us.... Jesus of course.
The “I” in I am with you always is emphatic, It is enough! He is enough!!
all the days until there shall be no more....
Wow.
It is enough to know we have a mission to fulfill and days to complete with Jesus by our side until He comes again.
