4 The Lord said to me,
5 “I chose you before I gave you life, and before you were born I selected you to be a prophet to the nations.”
6 I answered, “Sovereign Lord, I don’t know how to speak; I am too young.”
7 But the Lord said to me, “Do not say that you are too young, but go to the people I send you to, and tell them everything I command you to say.
8 Do not be afraid of them, for I will be with you to protect you. I, the Lord, have spoken!”
9 Then the Lord stretched out his hand, touched my lips, and said to me, “Listen, I am giving you the words you must speak.
10 Today I give you authority over nations and kingdoms to uproot and to pull down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant.”
1 Lord, I have come to you for protection; never let me be defeated!
2 Because you are righteous, help me and rescue me. Listen to me and save me!
3 Be my secure shelter and a strong fortress to protect me; you are my refuge and defence.
4 My God, rescue me from the wicked, from the power of those who are cruel and evil.
5 Sovereign Lord, I put my hope in you; I have trusted in you since I was young.
6 I have relied on you all my life; you have protected me since the day I was born. I will always praise you.
1 I may be able to speak the languages of human beings and even of angels, but if I have no love, my speech is no more than a noisy gong or a clanging bell.
2 I may have the gift of inspired preaching; I may have all knowledge and understand all secrets; I may have all the faith needed to move mountains—but if I have no love, I am nothing.
3 I may give away everything I have, and even give up my body to be burnt— but if I have no love, this does me no good.
4 Love is patient and kind; it is not jealous or conceited or proud;
5 love is not ill-mannered or selfish or irritable; love does not keep a record of wrongs;
6 love is not happy with evil, but is happy with the truth.
7 Love never gives up; and its faith, hope, and patience never fail.
8 Love is eternal. There are inspired messages, but they are temporary; there are gifts of speaking in strange tongues, but they will cease; there is knowledge, but it will pass.
9 For our gifts of knowledge and of inspired messages are only partial;
10 but when what is perfect comes, then what is partial will disappear.
11 When I was a child, my speech, feelings, and thinking were all those of a child; now that I have grown up, I have no more use for childish ways.
12 What we see now is like a dim image in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. What I know now is only partial; then it will be complete—as complete as God’s knowledge of me.
13 Meanwhile these three remain: faith, hope, and love; and the greatest of these is love.
21 as he said to them, “This passage of scripture has come true today, as you heard it being read.”
22 They were all well impressed with him and marvelled at the eloquent words that he spoke. They said, “Isn’t he the son of Joseph?”
23 He said to them, “I am sure that you will quote this proverb to me, ‘Doctor, heal yourself.’ You will also tell me to do here in my home town the same things you heard were done in Capernaum.
24 I tell you this,” Jesus added, “prophets are never welcomed in their home town.
25 “Listen to me: it is true that there were many widows in Israel during the time of Elijah, when there was no rain for three and a half years and a severe famine spread throughout the whole land.
26 Yet Elijah was not sent to anyone in Israel, but only to a widow living in Zarephath in the territory of Sidon.
27 And there were many people suffering from a dreaded skin disease who lived in Israel during the time of the prophet Elisha; yet not one of them was healed, but only Naaman the Syrian.”
28 When the people in the synagogue heard this, they were filled with anger.
29 They rose up, dragged Jesus out of the town, and took him to the top of the hill on which their town was built. They meant to throw him over the cliff,
30 but he walked through the middle of the crowd and went his way.

1 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord. He was sitting on his throne, high and exalted, and his robe filled the whole Temple.
2 Round him flaming creatures were standing, each of which had six wings. Each creature covered its face with two wings, and its body with two, and used the other two for flying.
3 They were calling out to each other: “Holy, holy, holy! The Lord Almighty is holy! His glory fills the world.”
4 The sound of their voices made the foundation of the Temple shake, and the Temple itself was filled with smoke.
5 I said, “There is no hope for me! I am doomed because every word that passes my lips is sinful, and I live among a people whose every word is sinful. And yet, with my own eyes, I have seen the King, the Lord Almighty!”
6 Then one of the creatures flew down to me, carrying a burning coal that he had taken from the altar with a pair of tongs.
7 He touched my lips with the burning coal and said, “This has touched your lips, and now your guilt is gone, and your sins are forgiven.”
8 Then I heard the Lord say, “Whom shall I send? Who will be our messenger?” I answered, “I will go! Send me!”
1 I thank you, Lord, with all my heart; I sing praise to you before the gods.
2 I face your holy Temple, bow down, and praise your name because of your constant love and faithfulness, because you have shown that your name and your commands are supreme.
3 You answered me when I called to you; with your strength you strengthened me.
4 All the kings in the world will praise you, Lord, because they have heard your promises.
5 They will sing about what you have done and about your great glory.
6 Even though you are so high above, you care for the lowly, and the proud cannot hide from you.
7 When I am surrounded by troubles, you keep me safe. You oppose my angry enemies and save me by your power.
8 You will do everything you have promised; Complete the work that you have begun.
1 And now I want to remind you, my brothers and sisters, of the Good News which I preached to you, which you received, and on which your faith stands firm.
2 That is the gospel, the message that I preached to you. You are saved by the gospel if you hold firmly to it—unless it was for nothing that you believed.
3 I passed on to you what I received, which is of the greatest importance: that Christ died for our sins, as written in the Scriptures;
4 that he was buried and that he was raised to life three days later, as written in the Scriptures;
5 that he appeared to Peter and then to all twelve apostles.
6 Then he appeared to more than 500 of his followers at once, most of whom are still alive, although some have died.
7 Then he appeared to James, and afterwards to all the apostles.
8 Last of all he appeared also to me—even though I am like someone whose birth was abnormal.
9 For I am the least of all the apostles—I do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted God’s church.
10 But by God’s grace I am what I am, and the grace that he gave me was not without effect. On the contrary, I have worked harder than any of the other apostles, although it was not really my own doing, but God’s grace working with me.
11 So then, whether it came from me or from them, this is what we all preach, and this is what you believe.
1 One day Jesus was standing on the shore of Lake Gennesaret while the people pushed their way up to him to listen to the word of God.
2 He saw two boats pulled up on the beach; the fishermen had left them and were washing the nets.
3 Jesus got into one of the boats—it belonged to Simon—and asked him to push off a little from the shore. Jesus sat in the boat and taught the crowd.
4 When he finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Push the boat out further to the deep water, and you and your partners let down your nets for a catch.”
5 “Master,” Simon answered, “we worked hard all night long and caught nothing. But if you say so, I will let down the nets.”
6 They let them down and caught such a large number of fish that the nets were about to break.
7 So they motioned to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. They came and filled both boats so full of fish that the boats were about to sink.
8 When Simon Peter saw what had happened, he fell on his knees before Jesus and said, “Go away from me, Lord! I am a sinful man!”
9 He and the others with him were all amazed at the large number of fish they had caught.
10 The same was true of Simon’s partners, James and John, the sons of Zebedee. Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will be catching people.”
11 They pulled the boats up on the beach, left everything, and followed Jesus.

5 The Lord says, “I will condemn those who turn away from me and put their trust in human beings, in the strength of mortals.
6 They are like bushes in the desert, which grow in the dry wilderness, on salty ground where nothing else grows. Nothing good ever happens to them.
7 “But I will bless those who put their trust in me.
8 They are like trees growing near a stream and sending out roots to the water. They are not afraid when hot weather comes, because their leaves stay green; they have no worries when there is no rain; they keep on bearing fruit.
9 “Who can understand the human heart? There is nothing else so deceitful; it is too sick to be healed.
10 I, the Lord, search human minds and test human hearts. I treat each one according to the way he lives, according to what he does.”
1 Happy are those who reject the advice of evil people, who do not follow the example of sinners or join those who have no use for God.
2 Instead, they find joy in obeying the Law of the Lord, and they study it day and night.
3 They are like trees that grow beside a stream, that bear fruit at the right time, and whose leaves do not dry up. They succeed in everything they do.
4 But evil people are not like this at all; they are like straw that the wind blows away.
5 Sinners will be condemned by God and kept apart from God’s own people.
6 The righteous are guided and protected by the Lord, but the evil are on the way to their doom.
12 Now, since our message is that Christ has been raised from death, how can some of you say that the dead will not be raised to life?
13 If that is true, it means that Christ was not raised;
14 and if Christ has not been raised from death, then we have nothing to preach and you have nothing to believe.
15 More than that, we are shown to be lying about God, because we said that he raised Christ from death—but if it is true that the dead are not raised to life, then he did not raise Christ.
16 For if the dead are not raised, neither has Christ been raised.
17 And if Christ has not been raised, then your faith is a delusion and you are still lost in your sins.
18 It would also mean that the believers in Christ who have died are lost.
19 If our hope in Christ is good for this life only and no more, then we deserve more pity than anyone else in all the world.
20 But the truth is that Christ has been raised from death, as the guarantee that those who sleep in death will also be raised.
17 When Jesus had come down from the hill with the apostles, he stood on a level place with a large number of his disciples. A large crowd of people was there from all over Judea and from Jerusalem and from the coastal cities of Tyre and Sidon;
18 they had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. Those who were troubled by evil spirits also came and were healed.
19 All the people tried to touch him, for power was going out from him and healing them all.
20 Jesus looked at his disciples and said, “Happy are you poor; the Kingdom of God is yours!
21 Happy are you who are hungry now; you will be filled! Happy are you who weep now; you will laugh!
22 “Happy are you when people hate you, reject you, insult you, and say that you are evil, all because of the Son of Man!
23 Be glad when that happens, and dance for joy, because a great reward is kept for you in heaven. For their ancestors did the very same things to the prophets.
24 “But how terrible for you who are rich now; you have had your easy life!
25 How terrible for you who are full now; you will go hungry! How terrible for you who laugh now; you will mourn and weep!
26 “How terrible when all people speak well of you; their ancestors said the very same things about the false prophets.

3 Joseph said to his brothers, “I am Joseph. Is my father still alive?” But when his brothers heard this, they were so terrified that they could not answer.
4 Then Joseph said to them, “Please come closer.” They did, and he said, “I am your brother Joseph, whom you sold into Egypt.
5 Now do not be upset or blame yourselves because you sold me here. It was really God who sent me ahead of you to save people’s lives.
6 This is only the second year of famine in the land; there will be five more years in which there will be neither ploughing nor reaping.
7 God sent me ahead of you to rescue you in this amazing way and to make sure that you and your descendants survive.
8 So it was not really you who sent me here, but God. He has made me the king’s highest official. I am in charge of his whole country; I am the ruler of all Egypt.
9 “Now hurry back to my father and tell him that this is what his son Joseph says: ‘God has made me ruler of all Egypt; come to me without delay.
10 You can live in the region of Goshen, where you can be near me—you, your children, your grandchildren, your sheep, your goats, your cattle, and everything else that you have.
11 If you are in Goshen, I can take care of you. There will still be five years of famine; and I do not want you, your family, and your livestock to starve.’ ”
15 Then, still weeping, he embraced each of his brothers and kissed them. After that, his brothers began to talk with him.
1 Don’t be worried on account of the wicked; don’t be jealous of those who do wrong.
2 They will soon disappear like grass that dries up; they will die like plants that wither.
3 Trust in the Lord and do good; live in the land and be safe.
4 Seek your happiness in the Lord, and he will give you your heart’s desire.
5 Give yourself to the Lord; trust in him, and he will help you;
6 he will make your righteousness shine like the noonday sun.
7 Be patient and wait for the Lord to act; don’t be worried about those who prosper or those who succeed in their evil plans.
8 Don’t give in to worry or anger; it only leads to trouble.
9 Those who trust in the Lord will possess the land, but the wicked will be driven out.
10 Soon the wicked will disappear; you may look for them, but you won’t find them;
11 the humble will possess the land and enjoy prosperity and peace.
39 The Lord saves the righteous and protects them in times of trouble.
40 He helps them and rescues them; he saves them from the wicked, because they go to him for protection.
35 Someone will ask, “How can the dead be raised to life? What kind of body will they have?”
36 You fool! When you sow a seed in the ground, it does not sprout to life unless it dies.
37 And what you sow is a bare seed, perhaps a grain of wheat or some other grain, not the full-bodied plant that will later grow up.
38 God provides that seed with the body he wishes; he gives each seed its own proper body.
42 This is how it will be when the dead are raised to life. When the body is buried, it is mortal; when raised, it will be immortal.
43 When buried, it is ugly and weak; when raised, it will be beautiful and strong.
44 When buried, it is a physical body; when raised, it will be a spiritual body. There is, of course, a physical body, so there has to be a spiritual body.
45 For the scripture says, “The first man, Adam, was created a living being”; but the last Adam is the life-giving Spirit.
46 It is not the spiritual that comes first, but the physical, and then the spiritual.
47 The first Adam, made of earth, came from the earth; the second Adam came from heaven.
48 Those who belong to the earth are like the one who was made of earth; those who are of heaven are like the one who came from heaven.
49 Just as we wear the likeness of the man made of earth, so we will wear the likeness of the Man from heaven.
50 What I mean, brothers and sisters, is that what is made of flesh and blood cannot share in God’s Kingdom, and what is mortal cannot possess immortality.
,
27 “But I tell you who hear me: love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,
28 bless those who curse you, and pray for those who ill-treat you.
29 If anyone hits you on one cheek, let him hit the other one too; if someone takes your coat, let him have your shirt as well.
30 Give to everyone who asks you for something, and when someone takes what is yours, do not ask for it back.
31 Do for others just what you want them to do for you.
32 “If you love only the people who love you, why should you receive a blessing? Even sinners love those who love them!
33 And if you do good only to those who do good to you, why should you receive a blessing? Even sinners do that!
34 And if you lend only to those from whom you hope to get it back, why should you receive a blessing? Even sinners lend to sinners, to get back the same amount!
35 No! Love your enemies and do good to them; lend and expect nothing back. You will then have a great reward, and you will be children of the Most High God. For he is good to the ungrateful and the wicked.
36 Be merciful just as your Father is merciful.
37 “Do not judge others, and God will not judge you; do not condemn others, and God will not condemn you; forgive others, and God will forgive you.
38 Give to others, and God will give to you. Indeed, you will receive a full measure, a generous helping, poured into your hands—all that you can hold. The measure you use for others is the one that God will use for you.”
