1 Naaman, the commander of the Syrian army, was highly respected and esteemed by the king of Syria, because through Naaman the Lord had given victory to the Syrian forces. He was a great soldier, but he suffered from a dreaded skin disease.
2 In one of their raids against Israel, the Syrians had carried off a little Israelite girl, who became a servant of Naaman’s wife.
3 One day she said to her mistress, “I wish that my master could go to the prophet who lives in Samaria! He would cure him of his disease.”
4 When Naaman heard of this, he went to the king and told him what the girl had said.
5 The king said, “Go to the king of Israel and take this letter to him.” So Naaman set out, taking 30,000 pieces of silver, 6,000 pieces of gold, and ten changes of fine clothes.
6 The letter that he took read: “This letter will introduce my officer Naaman. I want you to cure him of his disease.”
7 When the king of Israel read the letter, he tore his clothes in dismay and exclaimed, “How can the king of Syria expect me to cure this man? Does he think that I am God, with the power of life and death? It’s plain that he is trying to start a quarrel with me!”
8 When the prophet Elisha heard what had happened, he sent word to the king: “Why are you so upset? Send the man to me, and I’ll show him that there is a prophet in Israel!”
9 So Naaman went with his horses and chariot, and stopped at the entrance to Elisha’s house.
10 Elisha sent a servant out to tell him to go and wash himself seven times in the River Jordan, and he would be completely cured of his disease.
11 But Naaman left in a rage, saying, “I thought that he would at least come out to me, pray to the Lord his God, wave his hand over the diseased spot, and cure me!
12 Besides, aren’t the rivers Abana and Pharpar, back in Damascus, better than any river in Israel? I could have washed in them and been cured!”
13 His servants went up to him and said, “Sir, if the prophet had told you to do something difficult, you would have done it. Now why can’t you just wash yourself, as he said, and be cured?”
14 So Naaman went down to the Jordan, dipped himself in it seven times, as Elisha had instructed, and he was completely cured. His flesh became firm and healthy, like that of a child.
1 I praise you, Lord, because you have saved me and kept my enemies from gloating over me.
2 I cried to you for help, O Lord my God, and you healed me;
3 you kept me from the grave. I was on my way to the depths below, but you restored my life.
4 Sing praise to the Lord, all his faithful people! Remember what the Holy One has done, and give him thanks!
5 His anger lasts only a moment, his goodness for a lifetime. Tears may flow in the night, but joy comes in the morning.
6 I felt secure and said to myself, “I will never be defeated.”
7 You were good to me, Lord; you protected me like a mountain fortress. But then you hid yourself from me, and I was afraid.
8 I called to you, Lord; I begged for your help:
9 “What will you gain from my death? What profit from my going to the grave? Are dead people able to praise you? Can they proclaim your unfailing goodness?
10 Hear me, Lord, and be merciful! Help me, Lord!”
11 You have changed my sadness into a joyful dance; you have taken away my sorrow and surrounded me with joy.
12 So I will not be silent; I will sing praise to you. I will give you thanks for ever.
10 Rejoice with Jerusalem; be glad for her, all you that love this city! Rejoice with her now, all you that have mourned for her!
11 You will enjoy her prosperity, like a child at its mother’s breast.
12 The Lord says, “I will bring you lasting prosperity; the wealth of the nations will flow to you like a river that never goes dry. You will be like a child that is nursed by its mother, carried in her arms, and treated with love.
13 I will comfort you in Jerusalem, as a mother comforts her child.
14 When you see this happen, you will be glad; it will make you strong and healthy. Then you will know that I, the Lord, help those who obey me, and I show my anger against my enemies.”
1 Praise God with shouts of joy, all people!
2 Sing to the glory of his name; offer him glorious praise!
3 Say to God, “How wonderful are the things you do! Your power is so great that your enemies bow down in fear before you.
4 Everyone on earth worships you; they sing praises to you, they sing praises to your name.”
5 Come and see what God has done, his wonderful acts for mankind.
6 He changed the sea into dry land; our ancestors crossed the river on foot. There we rejoiced because of what he did.
7 He rules for ever by his might and keeps his eyes on the nations. Let no rebels rise against him.
8 Praise our God, all nations; let your praise be heard.
9 He has kept us alive and has not allowed us to fall.
7 Do not deceive yourselves; no one makes a fool of God. People will reap exactly what they sow.
8 If they sow in the field of their natural desires, from it they will gather the harvest of death; if they sow in the field of the Spirit, from the Spirit they will gather the harvest of eternal life.
9 So let us not become tired of doing good; for if we do not give up, the time will come when we will reap the harvest.
10 So then, as often as we have the chance, we should do good to everyone, and especially to those who belong to our family in the faith.
11 See what big letters I make as I write to you now with my own hand!
12 The people who are trying to force you to be circumcised are the ones who want to show off and boast about external matters. They do it, however, only so that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ.
13 Even those who practice circumcision do not obey the Law; they want you to be circumcised so that they can boast that you submitted to this physical ceremony.
14 As for me, however, I will boast only about the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ; for by means of his cross the world is dead to me, and I am dead to the world.
15 It does not matter at all whether or not one is circumcised; what does matter is being a new creature.
16 As for those who follow this rule in their lives, may peace and mercy be with them—with them and with all God’s people!
1 After this the Lord chose another 72 men and sent them out two by two, to go ahead of him to every town and place where he himself was about to go.
2 He said to them, “There is a large harvest, but few workers to gather it in. Pray to the owner of the harvest that he will send out workers to gather in his harvest.
3 Go! I am sending you like lambs among wolves.
4 Don’t take a purse or a beggar’s bag or shoes; don’t stop to greet anyone on the road.
5 Whenever you go into a house, first say, ‘Peace be with this house.’
6 If a peace-loving person lives there, let your greeting of peace remain on him; if not, take back your greeting of peace.
7 Stay in that same house, eating and drinking whatever they offer you, for workers should be given their pay. Don’t move round from one house to another.
8 Whenever you go into a town and are made welcome, eat what is set before you,
9 heal the sick in that town, and say to the people there, ‘The Kingdom of God has come near you.’
10 But whenever you go into a town and are not welcomed, go out in the streets and say,
11 ‘Even the dust from your town that sticks to our feet we wipe off against you. But remember that the Kingdom of God has come near you!’
16 Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever listens to you listens to me; whoever rejects you rejects me; and whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me.”
17 The 72 men came back in great joy. “Lord,” they said, “even the demons obeyed us when we gave them a command in your name!”
18 Jesus answered them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.
19 Listen! I have given you authority, so that you can walk on snakes and scorpions and overcome all the power of the Enemy, and nothing will hurt you.
20 But don’t be glad because the evil spirits obey you; rather be glad because your names are written in heaven.”

7 I had another vision from the Lord. In it I saw him standing beside a wall that had been built with the help of a plumb line, and there was a plumb line in his hand.
8 He asked me, “Amos, what do you see?” “A plumb line,” I answered. Then he said, “I am using it to show that my people are like a wall that is out of line. I will not change my mind again about punishing them.
9 The places where Isaac’s descendants worship will be destroyed. The holy places of Israel will be left in ruins. I will bring the dynasty of King Jeroboam to an end.”
10 Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, then sent a report to King Jeroboam of Israel: “Amos is plotting against you among the people. His speeches will destroy the country.
11 This is what he says: ‘Jeroboam will die in battle, and the people of Israel will be taken away from their land into exile.’ ”
12 Amaziah then said to Amos, “That’s enough, prophet! Go on back to Judah and do your preaching there. Let them pay you for it.
13 Don’t prophesy here at Bethel any more. This is the king’s place of worship, the national temple.”
14 Amos answered, “I am not the kind of prophet who prophesies for pay. I am a herdsman, and I take care of fig trees.
15 But the Lord took me from my work as a shepherd and ordered me to come and prophesy to his people Israel.
16 So now listen to what the Lord says. You tell me to stop prophesying, to stop raving against the people of Israel.
17 And so, Amaziah, the Lord says to you, ‘Your wife will become a prostitute on the streets, and your children will be killed in war. Your land will be divided up and given to others, and you yourself will die in a heathen country. And the people of Israel will certainly be taken away from their own land into exile.’ ”
1 God presides in the heavenly council; in the assembly of the gods he gives his decision:
2 “You must stop judging unjustly; you must no longer be partial to the wicked!
3 Defend the rights of the poor and the orphans; be fair to the needy and the helpless.
4 Rescue them from the power of the wicked.
5 “How ignorant you are! How stupid! You are completely corrupt, and justice has disappeared from the world.
6 ‘You are gods,’ I said; ‘all of you are children of the Most High.’
7 But you will die like mortals; your life will end like that of any prince.”
8 Come, O God, and rule the world; all the nations are yours.
9 The Lord will make you prosperous in all that you do; you will have many children and a lot of livestock, and your fields will produce abundant crops. He will be as glad to make you prosperous as he was to make your ancestors prosperous,
10 but you will have to obey him and keep all his laws that are written in this book of his teachings. You will have to turn to him with all your heart.
11 “The command that I am giving you today is not too difficult or beyond your reach.
12 It is not up in the sky. You do not have to ask, ‘Who will go up and bring it down for us, so that we can hear it and obey it?’
13 Nor is it on the other side of the ocean. You do not have to ask, ‘Who will go across the ocean and bring it to us, so that we may hear it and obey it?’
14 No, it is here with you. You know it and can quote it, so now obey it.
1 To you, O Lord, I offer my prayer;
2 in you, my God, I trust. Save me from the shame of defeat; don’t let my enemies gloat over me!
3 Defeat does not come to those who trust in you, but to those who are quick to rebel against you.
4 Teach me your ways, O Lord; make them known to me.
5 Teach me to live according to your truth, for you are my God, who saves me. I always trust in you.
6 Remember, O Lord, your kindness and constant love which you have shown from long ago.
7 Forgive the sins and errors of my youth. In your constant love and goodness, remember me, Lord!
8 Because the Lord is righteous and good, he teaches sinners the path they should follow.
9 He leads the humble in the right way and teaches them his will.
10 With faithfulness and love he leads all who keep his covenant and obey his commands.
1 From Paul, who by God’s will is an apostle of Christ Jesus, and from our brother Timothy-
2 To God’s people in Colossae, who are our faithful brothers and sisters in union with Christ: May God our Father give you grace and peace.
3 We always give thanks to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you.
4 For we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of your love for all God’s people.
5 When the true message, the Good News, first came to you, you heard about the hope it offers. So your faith and love are based on what you hope for, which is kept safe for you in heaven.
6 The gospel keeps bringing blessings and is spreading throughout the world, just as it has among you ever since the day you first heard about the grace of God and came to know it as it really is.
7 You learnt of God’s grace from Epaphras, our dear fellow-servant, who is Christ’s faithful worker on our behalf.
8 He has told us of the love that the Spirit has given you.
9 For this reason we have always prayed for you, ever since we heard about you. We ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will, with all the wisdom and understanding that his Spirit gives.
10 Then you will be able to live as the Lord wants and will always do what pleases him. Your lives will produce all kinds of good deeds, and you will grow in your knowledge of God.
11 May you be made strong with all the strength which comes from his glorious power, so that you may be able to endure everything with patience. And with joy give thanks to the Father, who has made you fit to have your share of what God has reserved for his people in the kingdom of light.
13 He rescued us from the power of darkness and brought us safe into the kingdom of his dear Son,
14 by whom we are set free, that is, our sins are forgiven.
25 A teacher of the Law came up and tried to trap Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to receive eternal life?”
26 Jesus answered him, “What do the Scriptures say? How do you interpret them?”
27 The man answered, “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind’; and ‘Love your neighbour as you love yourself.’ ”
28 “You are right,” Jesus replied; “do this and you will live.”
29 But the teacher of the Law wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “Who is my neighbour?”
30 Jesus answered, “There was once a man who was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho when robbers attacked him, stripped him, and beat him up, leaving him half dead.
31 It so happened that a priest was going down that road; but when he saw the man, he walked on by, on the other side.
32 In the same way a Levite also came along, went over and looked at the man, and then walked on by, on the other side.
33 But a Samaritan who was travelling that way came upon the man, and when he saw him, his heart was filled with pity.
34 He went over to him, poured oil and wine on his wounds and bandaged them; then he put the man on his own animal and took him to an inn, where he took care of him.
35 The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Take care of him,’ he told the innkeeper, ‘and when I come back this way, I will pay you whatever else you spend on him.’ ”
36 And Jesus concluded, “In your opinion, which one of these three acted like a neighbour towards the man attacked by the robbers?”
37 The teacher of the Law answered, “The one who was kind to him.” Jesus replied, “You go, then, and do the same.”

1 I had another vision from the Sovereign Lord. In it I saw a basket of fruit.
2 The Lord asked, “Amos, what do you see?” “A basket of fruit,” I answered. The Lord said to me, “The end has come for my people Israel. I will not change my mind again about punishing them.
3 On that day the songs in the palace will become cries of mourning. There will be dead bodies everywhere. They will be thrown out in silence.”
4 Listen to this, you that trample on the needy and try to destroy the poor of the country.
5 You say to yourselves, “We can hardly wait for the holy days to be over so that we can sell our corn. When will the Sabbath end, so that we can start selling again? Then we can overcharge, use false measures, and tamper with the scales to cheat our customers.
6 We can sell worthless wheat at a high price. We’ll find a poor person who can’t pay his debts, not even the price of a pair of sandals, and we’ll buy him as a slave.”
7 The Lord, the God of Israel, has sworn, “I will never forget their evil deeds.
8 And so the earth will quake, and everyone in the land will be in distress. The whole country will be shaken; it will rise and fall like the River Nile.
9 The time is coming when I will make the sun go down at noon and the earth grow dark in daytime. I, the Sovereign Lord, have spoken.
10 I will turn your festivals into funerals and change your glad songs into cries of grief. I will make you shave your heads and wear sackcloth, and you will be like parents mourning for their only child. That day will be bitter to the end.
11 “The time is coming when I will send famine on the land. People will be hungry, but not for bread; they will be thirsty, but not for water. They will hunger and thirst for a message from the Lord. I, the Sovereign Lord, have spoken.
12 People will wander from the Dead Sea to the Mediterranean and then on from the north to the east. They will look everywhere for a message from the Lord, but they will not find it.
1 Why do you boast, great one, of your evil? God’s faithfulness is eternal.
2 You make plans to ruin others; your tongue is like a sharp razor. You are always inventing lies.
3 You love evil more than good and falsehood more than truth.
4 You love to hurt people with your words, you liar!
5 So God will ruin you for ever; he will take hold of you and snatch you from your home; he will remove you from the world of the living.
6 Righteous people will see this and be afraid; then they will laugh at you and say,
7 “Look, here is someone who did not depend on God for safety, but trusted instead in his great wealth and looked for security in being wicked.”
8 But I am like an olive tree growing in the house of God; I trust in his constant love for ever and ever.
9 I will always thank you, God, for what you have done; in the presence of your people I will proclaim that you are good.
1 The Lord appeared to Abraham at the sacred trees of Mamre. As Abraham was sitting at the entrance of his tent during the hottest part of the day,
2 he looked up and saw three men standing there. As soon as he saw them, he ran out to meet them. Bowing down with his face touching the ground,
3 he said, “Sirs, please do not pass by my home without stopping; I am here to serve you.
4 Let me bring some water for you to wash your feet; you can rest here beneath this tree.
5 I will also bring a bit of food; it will give you strength to continue your journey. You have honoured me by coming to my home, so let me serve you.” They replied, “Thank you; we accept.”
6 Abraham hurried into the tent and said to Sarah, “Quick, take a sack of your best flour, and bake some bread.”
7 Then he ran to the herd and picked out a calf that was tender and fat, and gave it to a servant, who hurried to get it ready.
8 He took some cream, some milk, and the meat, and set the food before the men. There under the tree he served them himself, and they ate.
9 Then they asked him, “Where is your wife Sarah?” “She is there in the tent,” he answered.
10 One of them said, “Nine months from now I will come back, and your wife Sarah will have a son.” Sarah was behind him, at the door of the tent, listening.
1 Lord, who may enter your Temple? Who may worship on Zion, your sacred hill?
2 Those who obey God in everything and always do what is right, whose words are true and sincere,
3 and who do not slander others. They do no wrong to their friends nor spread rumours about their neighbours.
4 They despise those whom God rejects, but honour those who obey the Lord. They always do what they promise, no matter how much it may cost.
5 They make loans without charging interest and cannot be bribed to testify against the innocent. Whoever does these things will always be secure.
15 Christ is the visible likeness of the invisible God. He is the firstborn Son, superior to all created things.
16 For through him God created everything in heaven and on earth, the seen and the unseen things, including spiritual powers, lords, rulers, and authorities. God created the whole universe through him and for him.
17 Christ existed before all things, and in union with him all things have their proper place.
18 He is the head of his body, the church; he is the source of the body’s life. He is the firstborn Son, who was raised from death, in order that he alone might have the first place in all things.
19 For it was by God’s own decision that the Son has in himself the full nature of God.
20 Through the Son, then, God decided to bring the whole universe back to himself. God made peace through his Son’s blood on the cross and so brought back to himself all things, both on earth and in heaven.
21 At one time you were far away from God and were his enemies because of the evil things you did and thought.
22 But now, by means of the physical death of his Son, God has made you his friends, in order to bring you, holy, pure, and faultless, into his presence.
23 You must, of course, continue faithful on a firm and sure foundation, and must not allow yourselves to be shaken from the hope you gained when you heard the gospel. It is of this gospel that I, Paul, became a servant—this gospel which has been preached to everybody in the world.
24 And now I am happy about my sufferings for you, for by means of my physical sufferings I am helping to complete what still remains of Christ’s sufferings on behalf of his body, the church.
25 And I have been made a servant of the church by God, who gave me this task to perform for your good. It is the task of fully proclaiming his message,
26 which is the secret he hid through all past ages from all the human race but has now revealed to his people.
27 God’s plan is to make known his secret to his people, this rich and glorious secret which he has for all peoples. And the secret is that Christ is in you, which means that you will share in the glory of God.
28 So we preach Christ to everyone. With all possible wisdom we warn and teach them in order to bring each one into God’s presence as a mature individual in union with Christ.
38 As Jesus and his disciples went on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha welcomed him in her home.
39 She had a sister named Mary, who sat down at the feet of the Lord and listened to his teaching.
40 Martha was upset over all the work she had to do, so she came and said, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her to come and help me!”
41 The Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha! You are worried and troubled over so many things,
42 but just one is needed. Mary has chosen the right thing, and it will not be taken away from her.”

2 When the Lord first spoke to Israel through Hosea, he said to Hosea, “Go and get married; your wife will be unfaithful, and your children will be just like her. In the same way, my people have left me and become unfaithful.”
3 So Hosea married a woman named Gomer, the daughter of Diblaim. After the birth of their first child, a son,
4 the Lord said to Hosea, “Name him ‘Jezreel’, because it will not be long before I punish the king of Israel for the murders that his ancestor Jehu committed at Jezreel. I am going to put an end to Jehu’s dynasty.
5 And in the Valley of Jezreel I will at that time destroy Israel’s military power.”
6 Gomer had a second child—this time it was a daughter. The Lord said to Hosea, “Name her ‘Unloved’, because I will no longer show love to the people of Israel or forgive them.
7 But to the people of Judah I will show love. I, the Lord their God, will save them, but I will not do it by war—with swords or bows and arrows or with horses and horsemen.”
8 After Gomer had weaned her daughter, she became pregnant again and had another son.
9 The Lord said to Hosea, “Name him ‘Not-my-People’, because the people of Israel are not my people, and I am not their God.”
10 The people of Israel will become like the sand of the sea, more than can be counted or measured. Now God says to them, “You are not my people,” but the day is coming when he will say to them, “You are the children of the living God!”
1 Lord, you have been merciful to your land; you have made Israel prosperous again.
2 You have forgiven your people’s sins and pardoned all their wrongs.
3 You stopped being angry with them and held back your furious rage.
4 Bring us back, O God our saviour, and stop being displeased with us!
5 Will you be angry with us for ever? Will your anger never cease?
6 Make us strong again, and we, your people, will praise you.
7 Show us your constant love, O Lord, and give us your saving help.
8 I am listening to what the Lord God is saying; he promises peace to us, his own people, if we do not go back to our foolish ways.
9 Surely he is ready to save those who honour him, and his saving presence will remain in our land.
10 Love and faithfulness will meet; righteousness and peace will embrace.
11 Human loyalty will reach up from the earth, and God’s righteousness will look down from heaven.
12 The Lord will make us prosperous, and our land will produce rich harvests.
13 Righteousness will go before the Lord and prepare the path for him.
20 Then the Lord said to Abraham, “There are terrible accusations against Sodom and Gomorrah, and their sin is very great.
21 I must go down to find out whether or not the accusations which I have heard are true.”
22 Then the two men left and went on towards Sodom, but the Lord remained with Abraham.
23 Abraham approached the Lord and asked, “Are you really going to destroy the innocent with the guilty?
24 If there are fifty innocent people in the city, will you destroy the whole city? Won’t you spare it in order to save the fifty?
25 Surely you won’t kill the innocent with the guilty. That’s impossible! You can’t do that. If you did, the innocent would be punished along with the guilty. That is impossible. The judge of all the earth has to act justly.”
26 The Lord answered, “If I find fifty innocent people in Sodom, I will spare the whole city for their sake.”
27 Abraham spoke again: “Please forgive my boldness in continuing to speak to you, Lord. I am only a man and have no right to say anything.
28 But perhaps there will be only forty-five innocent people instead of fifty. Will you destroy the whole city because there are five too few?” The Lord answered, “I will not destroy the city if I find forty-five innocent people.”
29 Abraham spoke again: “Perhaps there will be only forty.” He replied, “I will not destroy it if there are forty.”
30 Abraham said, “Please don’t be angry, Lord, but I must speak again. What if there are only thirty?” He said, “I will not do it if I find thirty.”
31 Abraham said, “Please forgive my boldness in continuing to speak to you, Lord. Suppose that only twenty are found?” He said, “I will not destroy the city if I find twenty.”
32 Abraham said, “Please don’t be angry, Lord, and I will speak just once more. What if only ten are found?” He said, “I will not destroy it if there are ten.”
1 I thank you, Lord, with all my heart; I sing praise to you before the gods.
2 I face your holy Temple, bow down, and praise your name because of your constant love and faithfulness, because you have shown that your name and your commands are supreme.
3 You answered me when I called to you; with your strength you strengthened me.
4 All the kings in the world will praise you, Lord, because they have heard your promises.
5 They will sing about what you have done and about your great glory.
6 Even though you are so high above, you care for the lowly, and the proud cannot hide from you.
7 When I am surrounded by troubles, you keep me safe. You oppose my angry enemies and save me by your power.
8 You will do everything you have promised; Complete the work that you have begun.
6 Since you have accepted Christ Jesus as Lord, live in union with him.
7 Keep your roots deep in him, build your lives on him, and become stronger in your faith, as you were taught. And be filled with thanksgiving.
8 See to it, then, that no one enslaves you by means of the worthless deceit of human wisdom, which comes from the teachings handed down by human beings and from the ruling spirits of the universe, and not from Christ.
9 For the full content of divine nature lives in Christ, in his humanity,
10 and you have been given full life in union with him. He is supreme over every spiritual ruler and authority.
11 In union with Christ you were circumcised, not with the circumcision that is made by human beings, but with the circumcision made by Christ, which consists of being freed from the power of this sinful self.
12 For when you were baptized, you were buried with Christ, and in baptism you were also raised with Christ through your faith in the active power of God, who raised him from death.
13 You were at one time spiritually dead because of your sins and because you were Gentiles without the Law. But God has now brought you to life with Christ. God forgave us all our sins;
14 he cancelled the unfavourable record of our debts with its binding rules and did away with it completely by nailing it to the cross.
15 And on that cross Christ freed himself from the power of the spiritual rulers and authorities; he made a public spectacle of them by leading them as captives in his victory procession.
1 One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”
2 Jesus said to them, “When you pray, say this: ‘Father: May your holy name be honoured; may your Kingdom come.
3 Give us day by day the food we need.
4 Forgive us our sins, for we forgive everyone who does us wrong. And do not bring us to hard testing.’ ”
5 And Jesus said to his disciples, “Suppose one of you should go to a friend’s house at midnight and say, ‘Friend, let me borrow three loaves of bread.
6 A friend of mine who is on a journey has just come to my house, and I haven’t got any food for him!’
7 And suppose your friend should answer from inside, ‘Don’t bother me! The door is already locked, and my children and I are in bed. I can’t get up and give you anything.’
8 Well, what then? I tell you that even if he will not get up and give you the bread because you are his friend, yet he will get up and give you everything you need because you are not ashamed to keep on asking.
9 “And so I say to you: ask, and you will receive; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.
10 For all those who ask will receive, and those who seek will find, and the door will be opened to anyone who knocks.
11 Would any of you who are fathers give your son a snake when he asks for fish?
12 Or would you give him a scorpion when he asks for an egg?
13 Bad as you are, you know how to give good things to your children. How much more, then, will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
