I. Jesus Describes Authentic Worship
Scripture Text:
"Sir," the woman said, "I can see that you are a prophet.
Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem."
"Woman," Jesus replied, "believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
Joh 4:19 "Sir," the woman said, "I can see that you are a prophet.
You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.
Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem."
"Woman," Jesus replied, "believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.
You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews.
Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.
God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth."
II.
Worship requires an understanding of God
WORSHIP-FULL
Act 17:22 Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said: "People of Athens!
I see that in every way you are very religious.
Act 17:23 For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO AN UNKNOWN GOD.
So you are ignorant of the very thing you worship—and this is what I am going to proclaim to you.
Act 17:24 "The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands.
A.
Do you depend on a physical building or a specific setting for the proper worship environment?
Act 17:25 And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything.
Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else.
Act 17:26 From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands.
Do you depend on a physical building or a specific setting for the proper worship environment?
God is Spirit and cannot be confined to a building.
The location of worship is not nearly as important as the attitude of the worshipers.
The specific conditions that enhance worship tend to be quite individual and should not be legislated.
By emphasizing where we worship, we may neglect the substance of our worship where we are.
B. God is Spirit and cannot be confined to a building.
Act 17:27 God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us.
Act 17:28 'For in him we live and move and have our being.'
As some of your own poets have said, 'We are his offspring.'
C.
The location of worship is not nearly as important as the attitude of the worshipers.
Act 17:29 "Therefore since we are God's offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone—an image made by human design and skill.
D.
By emphasizing where we worship, we may neglect the substance of our worship where we are.
Act 17:30 In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent.
II.
Worship requires an understanding of God
A. Longtime Followers Can Have no clue as to Who Jesus is!
Philip said, "Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us."
Jesus answered: "Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time?

God is the Creator of Everything
"The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands.

God Maps Out Man’s Destiny
And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything.
Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else.
From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands.
D.
God Want’s Us to Seek and Find Him
From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands.
God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us.

E.
We belong to Him

III.
Worship is not Regulated by Earthly Location
A. The Earthly Holy Place
Now the first covenant had regulations for worship and an earthly sanctuary.
A tabernacle was set up.
In its first room were the lampstand and the table with its consecrated bread; this was called the Holy Place.
Behind the second curtain was a room called the Most Holy Place,
which had the golden altar of incense and the gold-covered ark of the covenant.
This ark contained the gold jar of manna, Aaron's staff that had budded, and the stone tablets of the covenant.
Above the ark were the cherubim of the Glory, overshadowing the atonement cover.
But we cannot discuss these things in detail now.
In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent.
When everything had been arranged like this, the priests entered regularly into the outer room to carry on their ministry.
But only the high priest entered the inner room, and that only once a year, and never without blood, which he offered for himself and for the sins the people had committed in ignorance.
