Introduction

The victorious Christian life.” We have heard the phrase, pondered the concept, and perhaps even sought the reality in our lives. How can we live with abiding confidence in the work Christ has done for us?

The last battle of the American Revolution was the Battle of Blue Licks, fought at the stream that bears that name. It was a battle that should never have been fought, for it was fought af ter the war was over.

In the same manner, we often strive to live as victorious Christians, forgetting that Christ has already secured our salvation and won the final victory over sin’s power for us on the cross. Paul writes, “The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” ().

This message is an underlying theme in the book of Joshua. The faithful leader of Israel who was given charge to lead the Jews into the Land of Promise was originally named Hoshea (, ), meaning “salvation.” Moses later gave him the name Joshua, which means “The Lord saves,” or “The Lord gives victory.”

The same name was assigned by God the Father to His son, Jesus Christ (—Jesus is the Greek form of the Hebrew name “Joshua.”). God made the linkage for our instruction. We look to Jesus, our savior, for our salvation. His victory is our victory through faith. For “who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God” (). As the Jews followed Joshua into victory, so must we follow Jesus.

Our victory not only grants us a hope for eternity but also joy for today. We, like Joshua, can be “strong and courageous” if we will meditate on the truths of Scripture as seen in the book of Joshua (). The book of Joshua can be divided quite simply: His Victory (), Our Victory ().

12 And turned from Sarid eastward toward the sunrising unto the border of Chisloth-tabor, and then goeth out to Daberath, and goeth up to Japhia, 13 And from thence passeth on along on the east to Gittah-hepher, to Ittah-kazin, and goeth out to Remmon-methoar to Neah; So they made an end of dividing the country. 1 The Lord also spake unto Joshua, saying, 2 Speak to the children of Israel, saying, Appoint out for you cities of refuge, whereof I spake unto you by the hand of Moses: 3 That the slayer that killeth any person unawares and unwittingly may flee thither: and they shall be your refuge from the avenger of blood. 4 And when he that doth flee unto one of those cities shall stand at the entering of the gate of the city, and shall declare his cause in the ears of the elders of that city, they shall take him into the city unto them, and give him a place, that he may dwell among them. 5 And if the avenger of blood pursue after him, then they shall not deliver the slayer up into his hand; because he smote his neighbour unwittingly, and hated him not beforetime. 6 And he shall dwell in that city, until he stand before the congregation for judgment, and until the death of the high priest that shall be in those days: then shall the slayer return, and come unto his own city, and unto his own house, unto the city from whence he fled. 7 And they appointed Kedesh in Galilee in mount Naphtali, and Shechem in mount Ephraim, and Kirjath-arba, which is Hebron, in the mountain of Judah. 8 And on the other side Jordan by Jericho eastward, they assigned Bezer in the wilderness upon the plain out of the tribe of Reuben, and Ramoth in Gilead out of the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan out of the tribe of Manasseh. 9 These were the cities appointed for all the children of Israel, and for the stranger that sojourneth among them, that whosoever killeth any person at unawares might flee thither, and not die by the hand of the avenger of blood, until he stood before the congregation. 1 Then came near the heads of the fathers of the Levites unto Eleazar the priest, and unto Joshua the son of Nun, and unto the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel; if it be in rebellion, or if in transgression against the Lord, (save us not this day,) 23 That we have built us an altar to turn from following the Lord, or if to offer thereon burnt offering or meat offering, or if to offer peace offerings thereon, let the Lord himself require it; 24 And if we have not rather done it for fear of this thing, saying, In time to come your children might speak unto our children, saying, What have ye to do with the Lord God of Israel? 25 For the Lord hath made Jordan a border between us and you, ye children of Reuben and children of Gad; ye have no part in the Lord: so shall your children make our children cease from fearing the Lord. 26 Therefore we said, Let us now prepare to build us an altar, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice: 27 But that it may be a witness between us, and you, and our generations after us, that we might do the service of the Lord before him with our burnt offerings, and with our sacrifices, and with our peace offerings; that your children may not say to our children in time to come, Ye have no part in the Lord. 28 Therefore said we, that it shall be, when they should so say to us or to our generations in time to come, that we may say again, Behold the pattern of the altar of the Lord, which our fathers made, not for burnt offerings, nor for sacrifices; but it is a witness between us and you. 29 God forbid that we should rebel against the Lord, and turn this day from following the Lord, to build an altar for burnt offerings, for meat offerings, or for sacrifices, beside the altar of the Lord our God that is before his tabernacle. 30 And when Phinehas the priest, and the princes of the congregation and heads of the thousands of Israel which were with him, heard the words that the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the children of Manasseh spake, it pleased them. 31 And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said unto the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the children of Manasseh, This day we perceive that the Lord is among us, because ye have not committed this trespass against the Lord: now ye have delivered the children of Israel out of the hand of the Lord. 32 And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, and the princes, returned from the children of Reuben, and from the children of Gad, out of the land of Gilead, unto the land of Canaan, to the children of Israel, and brought them word again. 33 And the thing pleased the children of Israel; The entrance into Canaan nowhere depended upon the Israelite’s abilities and always depend- ed on God’s ability. The same God who divided the Red Sea to bring His people out of Egypt would divide the Jordan River to bring them into Canaan. No human plan or power could divide a river during its flood season when its banks swelled with surging water. That the people might never forget God’s miracle, the Lord commanded them to set up memorial stones ().

The conquest of the land would not depend on the people’s prowess but on their holiness. Thus, God commanded them to renew their obligations through circumcision and the Passover (). The Commander of the Lord’s army arrived to remind Joshua that the battle was the Lord’s as was the victory (-5). This Commander in Chief was likely Jesus Christ, our Lord, appearing before His incarnation (). As salvation through the cross is strange and unacceptable to the world (), so would the Jew’s seven days of marching around Jericho cause snickers and unbelief among the people of Jericho. Nevertheless, an unseen army of the Lord fought against the seemingly impregnable fortress, and the great walls of Jericho came smashing to the ground.

1 And it came to pass, when all the kings of the Amorites, which were on the side of Jordan westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites, which were by the sea, heard that the Lord had dried up the waters of Jordan from before the children of Israel, until we were passed over, that their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them any more, because of the children of Israel. 2 At that time the Lord said unto Joshua, Make thee sharp knives, and circumcise again the children of Israel the second time. 3 And Joshua made him sharp knives, and circumcised the children of Israel at the hill of the foreskins. 4 And this is the cause why Joshua did circumcise: All the people that came out of Egypt, that were males, even all the men of war, died in the wilderness by the way, after they came out of Egypt. 5 Now all the people that came out were circumcised: but all the people that were born in the wilderness by the way as they came forth out of Egypt, them they had not circumcised. 6 For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the people that were men of war, which came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they obeyed not the voice of the Lord: unto whom the Lord sware that he would not shew them the land, which the Lord sware unto their fathers that he would give us, a land that floweth with milk and honey. 7 And their children, whom he raised up in their stead, them Joshua circumcised: for they were uncircumcised, because they had not circumcised them by the way. 8 And it came to pass, when they had done circumcising all the people, that they abode in their places in the camp, till they were whole. 9 And the Lord said unto Joshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you. Wherefore the name of the place is called Gilgal unto this day. 10 And the children of Israel encamped in Gilgal, and kept the passover on the fourteenth day of the month at even in the plains of Jericho. 11 And they did eat of the old corn of the land on the morrow after the passover, unleavened cakes, and parched corn in the selfsame day. 12 And the manna ceased on the morrow after they had eaten of the old corn of the land; neither had the children of Israel manna any more; but they did eat of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.

Chapter 12

18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. 20 Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? 21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. 22 For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: 23 But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; 24 But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. 25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

The Israelites quickly forgot that their victories were first God’s victories. Self-reliance led to smashing defeat at the gates of Ai. However, when God’s people confessed their sin and learned faithfulness in the small things, God again fought on their behalf. God even disrupted the normal patterns of sunlight, and unusual events tied to the weather were implements of warfare (). No one could stand before the Holy One of Israel, and Joshua and the people took the land over a period of seven years.

So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, And hasted not to go down about a whole day. 14 And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the Lord hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the Lord fought for Israel. 15 And Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.

Our Victory

Some theologians have recognized a striking connection between the Old Testament book of Joshua and the New Testament book of Ephesians. The first half of Ephesians describes what Christ has done for us. The second portion of the book tells how we should appropriate Christ’s accomplishments. Christ has defeated Satan; yet, Christ’s followers still must resist the evil one. We are presently seated with our Lord in the heavenlies (). Yet our position does not always match our practice. We need to claim His victory as our own; so it was in days of old. Joshua successfully gave the people all the land God had promised to them (). It would then be up to the people to fill out the land. The foe, though defeated, was still present.

23 So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the Lord said unto Moses; and Joshua gave it for an inheritance unto Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. And the land rested from war.

The Israelites were not yet numerous enough to settle the whole of Canaan. For this reason, they would need to drive out the remaining enemies over time. Simply to accept the remaining Canaanites and to intermix with them would be sure defeat, for these natives practiced heinous sins and the grossest forms of idolatry and immorality (). We can outline this second half of the book of Joshua as follows:

Final Thought

Just as God commanded Joshua to be strong and courageous and to be careful to follow the Book of the Law, so did Joshua command the people (). If they would but follow in his steps, his victory would become their victory. The same God, who has seated us in the heavenly realms with Christ, promises to lead us into a successful warfare against heavenly powers of darkness (; ). Let us trust in Him. Let us obey Him. Let us lead simple and holy lives. Let us proclaim the Gospel faithfully. If we do so, our Joshua promises to fight for us (; ), and we too can claim that His victory will be our victory!

Amy Carmichael was a missionary to India who courageously gave of herself to free young girls from the horrors of temple prostitution. Her resolve came through trust in the Christ who has won the victory for us and who calls us to live victoriously through His strength. She wrote:

Before the pain has passed in peace,

Give me, my God, to sing a song.

Let me not lose the chance to prove

The fullness of enabling love;

God is not promising that life will be easy for believers. As we shall see, Joshua faced setbacks, opposition, and crises—and so will we. But if we obey God’s Word and hold our ground, we will stand firm even though others around us may crumble. True prosperity and success come from clinging obediently to the Word of God.

When we live according to God’s promises and his Word, and when we trust in his presence moment by moment, he will give us the victory—guaranteed!

God tells the Israelites to take twelve stones from the riverbed and carry them to the place where they will camp for the night. There, in the encampment, they are to build a monument of stones. As we look at the story of Joshua and the siege of Jericho, we again see clear parallels between his time and ours. Like the Canaanite world, our world is permeated by immorality and idolatry. Atheism, paganism, and false religion are on the march. Truly, we live in Jericho times. Living in such morally and spiritually corrosive days, it would be easy to give in to fear. It’s tempting to look upon the fortress of Satan’s domain and say, “The enemy is too powerful. Satan’s fortress walls are too strong. Why even try?” That’s the mindset Satan wants for us—a mindset of fear and defeat. Our enemy knows he doesn’t stand a chance against us if we live by faith in Jesus, our Commander-in-Chief. With confidence in our Lord, we can topple fortresses of addiction, temptation, lust, hate, abuse, division, racism, and more. Trusting in Jesus, we can reclaim our neighborhoods, workplaces, marketplaces, and schools for him.

You may have been going through a time of trial in your life that seems completely hopeless. Perhaps you feel you are marching around the walls of Jericho, again and again, accomplishing nothing and wondering if there is any point in going on. Perhaps God is trying to teach you the same lesson he taught the Israelites. Perhaps he wants you to understand that your only hope is in him. He may be waiting for you to admit that this “Jericho” in your life is too powerful for you. But no enemy is too powerful for God. He is waiting for you to turn to him and say, “I trust you to topple those walls. I can do nothing in my own strength. My hope is in you. Please pour out your power and blessing on me. Go before me, Lord, and win this battle—and I will give you all the glory.”
